Hi @ChaelSonnenOffical, Chael. Dricus started with freestyle wrestling & judo as his base for mma. He did this as a child growing up. He was not an SA champion wrestler he found the judo easier to do as a kid than the wrestling. He started kickboxing later in high school when he was 16 and soon after that he moved over to MMA. We do not have wrestling in school or college or universities in South Africa. It is very sad the sport is very small and we are struggling to build wrestling. We have lots of talented kids in the townships over here that can become world champions in wrestling. But there is no funding for wrestling mats etc.

Fellow South Africa here i did at some point place 2nd in South Africa in Greco Roman wrestling but im a few Years older than Dricus. To my understanding he never had Spingbok ( South Africa ) Colors in wrestling. In South Africa we don't have wrestling in schools or universities, you join a local club and can then earn Provincial colors ( Similar to state champion) and with that compete at nationals against other champs from different provinces in South Africa to become national champion. Dricus wrestled at primary school level around 13Y old. and moved on to Kick boxing where he competed nationally and internationally. also i have never heard of the national team training at the Olympic training center, nowhere near that kind of resources to get our athletes there. Guys are posting on social media for donations to fly to wrestle in African countries. I do personally know a dear friend who was ALL African Games Champion and he did personally train at the Olympic Training Centre in Colorado Springs. As far as I Know he is the Only South African to do so.

Some of Dricus long time friends are African champions, multiple times national champions, junior Olympians etc for wrestling but you are right he never "officially trained" with the national squad or national team but definately rubbed shoulder with some Proteas and Junior Proteas
