One truck to avoid bleeding under the masking tape is to apply a thin coat of the finish that is under the tape onto the top seam of the tape. That way what bleads under the tape is more of the finish that is under the tape and it seals the seam. Even if you scrape back to the tape Sean before you move on it will still seal the seam. It also reduces pull off while removing the tape, giving a nice crisp line between colors. What I am referring to is when you sealed the binding then taped it off. Reseal the top of the tape past th seam a bit.

I’ve seen sandblasting work for the raised grain look. It shouldn’t leave any scratches like the wire brushes do. Can be a bit messy, but it’s cheap to try it out if you already own an adequate air compressor.
@xdoctorblindx3 жыл бұрын
I was about to make the same comment. Quicker, cheaper, and would work more evenly on the sides of the guitar.

A thin spit-coat can reduce the end grain absorption to give you the same effect as the parallel grain contrast. I did much of this in the 80s and 90s and there are so many tricks to learn.

If you had it to do over, would you have done the wire brushing and staining before you glued in the binding?
@DriftwoodGuitars3 жыл бұрын
Not at all. It wouldn’t work that way. If I had roughed you the body, then the router bearing for the binding wouldn’t have a smooth surface to ride on, and would make for sloppy binding.
@edwardpetersen43093 жыл бұрын
@@DriftwoodGuitars but you could have cut the slot, did the machinations, then glued in the binding.
@DriftwoodGuitars3 жыл бұрын
But then I’d still need to level the binding to the body, and that would either erase my work on weathering the sides, and make me sand uneven binding as the sandpaper would ride on the bumpy sides.

I’m curious, what was the purpose of using the wire brushes after sanding the first time?
@Raven-Creations2 жыл бұрын
The wood grain is formed by alternating layers of soft spring/summer growth, and harder autumn/winter growth. Wire brushing, sandblasting, or blowtorching, will cut into the soft growth allowing it to take more finish and exaggerate the grain pattern. If you sand after your initial staining, you remove the stain from the high spots, and leave it in the low spots, making the pattern even more exaggerated.

You hit the nail on the head about relicing. I can't stand it but ya got SRV, Van Halen, and Tommy Emmanuel. The greats who generally play or played, defaced or poorly cared for guitars except Tommy. I have KZbin premium which costs me a small amount every month and never see a single commercial. The content and access to all of it is worth a lot to me and I consider it a good deal to be able to do my part to support it with Premium and yet not have to deal with ads. I don't expect KZbin to be free. TV used to be free - but it had ads too. Netlix is not free but has no ads- I also consider it a good deal. If it wasn't of much value to me I wouldn't complain about it I just wouldn't be using it.
