@JosephHunstad thanks for the lesson. The mortise bits I received came with zero instructions. I tried using them once...the chisel was spinning like crazy! Clearly I did something wrong. I stopped it immediately. Those suckers are wicked sharp! I didn't know about the diamond bit for the inside...I'll have to invest in one.

Go through all the steps of sharpening these including honing the inside it will make a huge difference. If Chip ejection is not easy, then Wood will build up and heat and burn inside of there, so follow the directions and yes those diamond homes from Rockler or actually Amazonare really good and Chuck went in your drill press and then just carefully rotate that to sharpen them. Is it possible to use this machine to create a vertical square hole in a piece of wood that will be installed at an angle? I've got half-inch square balusters/spindles and I don't want to use a baluster shoe, just a clean square hole to accept the balusters as they go down the the angled trim cap (not being installed on treads). Would you use an angled jig to hold the cap at the correct angle before drilling? Thanks in advance!

OK you ask a great question. There are some machines that the head actually will tilt but mine does not do that. If you have a tilting machine, that’s great. You can set it at the angle desired entry your hole. For those like mine, that the head does not pivot, an angled block beneath the workpiece will give you the proper angle and then you can enjoy your hole. That would be my recommendation. Do you need a special drill press to do this ? Mine doesn't have a collet. It's just a regular one from Harbor Freight. Can I adapt it for this use ?

so you’re really talking timber framing with a 20 foot 10 x 10 timber. There are actually mortising machines specifically made for that that you can bring to the timber not the timber to the machine. My machine would be inappropriate for that the only other way to do it frankly would be to do it by hand and have the proper mortising chisels and files. Consider subscribing. Thanks. Joe.

Yes, well it’s actually a dedicated mortising machine whose sole purpose is to drill square holes. I made a dining room table for my daughter that had 150 mortise tenon joints. This machine made it happen consider subscribing. Thanks, Joe.

Hello there thank you for your question. The brand of mortising machine that I’m using is a jet. There are many different manufacturers that make good products. The mortising chisel‘s are also made by jet made in Taiwan. There are certainly much more expensive sets on the market that are probably better out of the box but these have worked beautifully for me once I’ve sharpened and honed them. The main thing is the content is great! Hope that helps. Whilst I am writing this, I may as well ask the question: I tried using my mortiser yesterday after watching your video. The bit wouldn't cut into the wood, even when I applied extra force. Do you think the bit isn't sharp enough? Or could it be that the rotating inner part is positioned too far into the square outer part? Also it was very noisy. Is there a particular lubricant I should be using? Thanks :)

@@charlespell7762 OK great question no your mortising bits are not sharp. I have another video on my channel on the step-by-step method to sharpen these perfectly. I’ve reviewed all the other videos online and honestly the one I’ve created is the most complete. If you follow those directions you will create Morris bits that make the whole process super easy, clean no burning, the noise rattling, etc. will stop and it will be a joy to use.
