Hey Chuck, The USA 16N is worth saving! I would recommend Disassembling the chuck first, machine the body bore, cut a shoulder into it, and thread it. Then make a threaded arbor with a shoulder that will seat into the shoulder of the chuck body. It should run pretty true.

So far so good!

Normally Chuck would chuck the chuck away, but this time he is chucking it up :)

I got the same type of deflection when I was boring out a couple surface grinder hubs when it would hit the hardened sections, especially when I didn't have the angle of the insert right in lighter cuts. Aloha, Chuck

Yeah, it's so odd to see it happen and it made me want to keep on cutting, LOL! Hey, did you want a set of reamers too...I can't recall, but would be happy to send you some!

You could mount an indicator base on your saddle and the indicator against the boring bar and then on cross slide if we were interested in seeing exactly which parts of the whole setup were flexing the most. If the tool post itself or the cross slide, you might be able to see if those things could be "stiffened" up a little to help things in all turning and boring endeavors. If you have an extra set. I don't recall exactly which tapered reamers I have in the toolbox.

I was just out there checking on runout and found some stuff that I need to address before getting anything turned accurately. While my spindle, and even the backing plate on the 3-jaw, are maybe a tenth out(it's nearly imperceptible on a thousands indicator, just a tiny tic), the circumference of the chuck body is out by 0.006"!!! I recall it was out a little, but must have either measured wrong when doing the initial install, or it has gotten worse...which I don't see as a possibility. I will video it all and include the spring in the tool and the mandrel as it is now, and then again after beefing everything up. Thanks for the inspiration, and I will send you a set, minus a No.1 reamer since there's only 1 left for me, when I go to the PO tomorrow. Aloha...Chuck

About your Natt problem, try a compost pile near your shop with vegetable cuttings. The Nats should go to that and stay of you and your equipment.

News Flash, 16N has 1/8" to 5/8" capacity, NOT 1/8" to 3/4"!

It's worth trying to save that 16n.

Absolutely! It is so smooth and easy to open/close, I've actually never had one nearly as nice...thanks for stopping in man, the reamers are going in the mail tomorrow :)

The boring bar will bend if you have it so far out from the holder… You should have stripped it completely to check the condition of the jaws etc first… It’s definitely steel…not cast iron…

Hey man, how you doing? I hope you're doing well and that your shop is running like a well oiled machine...or shall we say a group of well oiled machines :)
