The cheese slicer kit I was using needs a 3-3/4" deep hole, but most 1/4" drill bits are not long enough. Follow Ralph on this build as he shows you a work around to get the depth you need.
This kit is from Woodcraft: amzn.to/4fs98YV

Nice way to solve that problem. I ran into the same issue and had to barely grip the bit to finish the hole, as you did. I think that when doing the glue-up I might leave the bit in the hole to make sure that both pieces were aligned, then if it's off by a smidgen just spin the bit with the drill to free it.

Thanks! I thought about using the bit or the harp to align the glue up, but with the two side pieces it was not necessary. Glad you enjoyed the video.

Just to ask - Is there anything stopping you from just shortening the ends of the harp by a half an inch? From the camera angles you showed, it looks like it's just a rod with two bends in it.

Good Question, and thanks for watching. Cutting the rod might work but then the bend may be too close to the wood. The easier solution may be to simply cut the kerf for the wire at 2-1/2" from the end instead of 3". The extra room on that side is really just to hold sliced pieces, so the extra 1/2" may not be needed. I used this technique as a lesson in design. It may come in handy for other applications that are not so easy to bypass.

Cross grain gluing. The inner board will shrink and bind up the shaft.

Thanks for watching! The inner board is in the same orientation as the standard glue up is. And if there is shrinkage it will make the holes larger. But wood movement is not much of an issue on parts this small.
