Thank you, Thank you for your video, its the only one out there that talks about HOW deep to drill the hole for the threaded insert. please if you make another video with the different types of threaded inserts for wood hobbyists hold the different types by tweezers. I also think that it comes down to the lingo and terminology of the part names and what the bolt or fasteners that go into the threaded inserts. Cheers, thanks again.

Good effort. It all sounds plausible and looks easy enough. I will follow this procedure.

First off great video all around. Next is I have back to this video for a second project. I do not have a drill press, but a harbor freight drill guide. I’ve used the bolt with cut off head method into poplar, works flawless. This time around into blk walnut slab tabletop. Not only did the insert strip and not go flush but the bolt broke off inside of insert and I made a mess removing as much as I could. Luckily it’s the underside of table and can be covered with the base but looking for a better way to go about this. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Great video! I have to admit, at first glance it looked like another random an generally boring tip video. But something kept me watching and I quite enjoyed it, learned a lot from it and hit the like button. Great Job Sir!

Hi David, So glad you liked the video. I have been a professional cabinetmaker for 20 years now and I am trying to use the channel to get as much of that experience as possible out there for others to use. Threaded inserts can be a real pain if you don't approach them right. If you have a proper method they work like a dream. -Andrew

Gear wrench works better, slide over 1/4” shank then insert into drill press. Ratchet gear wrench to turn in insert while pulling down on drill press handle. 👍

I like the T-bar for when a drill press is not an option - I think a block of wood with a hole drilled for the shaft would keep the T-bar perpendicular to the surface - the hole would need to be the same size as the shaft but bigger at the base to allow for the insert.

Thanks for sharing, great tip. I have been running into an issue of the threaded bits pulling back out as I tighten my two pieces together. I am using pine and had been drilling into the end of a 2x2 so with the grain? I’m attaching legs of a table to cross bars (2x2) . Any suggestions? Is it the grain of the wood, softness, adhesive needed?

Why not just turn your drill press chuck by hand as you put pressure on the insert with the drill press lever instead of using a wrench?
@anamericanartisan9846
@anamericanartisan9846 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Prmskeeper, I l think the wrench grips better and is less awkward but your idea should work. It's a good option if you don't have the right wrench. Thanks for watching and commenting. -Andrew

Man, if you'd read the manufacturer's manual before work, this method wouldn't be a lifehack to you. Also you can use regular screwdriver with the same result.
@jimsulsona4128
@jimsulsona4128 4 жыл бұрын
Actually, you CANNOT use a screwdriver to produce the same results, which was his point about using the T-Wrench (which is only slightly better than using a screwdriver). If you have ever worked with insert nuts, you will find that making sure they are square and truly perpendicular to your work piece is the key to accurate placement and use, and manually driving in the insert nuts by hand using a screwdriver allows too much variance and produces inconsistent results - especially with softer woods! Many folks even make their own jig to make sure the nuts go in straight, but I like this approach, because it doesn't require making something else, and most woodworkers already have everything they need to do it in this fashion. Additionally, most woodworkers recommend that you use some type of adhesive on the exterior threads of the insert nuts to keep them from moving over time because of the potential torque applied to them, but that has its own caveats - such as too much adhesive, and being careful not to fill the interior space so that your bolt will still go as far as you need into the insert nut.
