Nice job bud. I cringed as you progressively drilled the table tho. Thin the web on a big drill and slowly push a nice big drill though in one go. Stops all those vibes once the skin is off cast Iron it's hopefully quite soft!

Would you make one more 10 minutes video of polishing your knob (all three)? :smiley face light skin tone:

A friend of mine recently acquired one of these drills but something internal has failed, preventing the chuck from turning. He was wanting to find more information before pulling it apart, and really struggling to find anything at all on the inner workings. With this series it's easy to understand how everything should work and, hopefully, he'll be able to repair it and get it working again. Since it doesn't make any horrible noises, and given the damage inside your machine, I suspect it's going to be that shaft you bronze-sleeved so nicely. Very nicely made videos, entertaining and informative even if we didn't have the same drill to try and fix, thank you for taking the time to share your project and document it so well.

What's the process for the labels? Kinda seemed like an interesting project on it's own. Is it a laser etched metal thing?
@GeoffreyCroker6 жыл бұрын
The original labels were screen printed and anodised. The new labels are printed on anodised aluminium (I think they call it sublimation or something like that). The chemicals for the old screen printing methods are no longer available. At least not as far as I can find. But I am putting time into figuring out a diy method to reproduce these properly.

I fit garage doors for a living and i meet some very talented old men with very good old tools hid away in the back. It's amazing to see. shed and buried. But still perfectly capable of good use. Too old to use them, it's a bit sad at times. I often ask are you selling that? They do not want to part with them trusty tools. Sentimental value! I've met customers aged 90, they come out in the work gear wanting to be part of the team they love it.

I've just found you - excellent series! The rivet fixings used for the badges, sounding like a simpleton perhaps but how do these work without any pressure from behind? Are they blind tapered holes?
@GeoffreyCroker6 жыл бұрын
The rivets have a kind of spiral thread cut into them, like a very steep screw. The sharp edge of the thread is slightly larger than the hole, so they bite in. They're called hammer drive screws.
@videogalore6 жыл бұрын
I see, thank you for that - I've not heard/seen these before - I'll bear them in mind for plates like this as they certainly look the part! :)

3.50 Elliot produced lovely taper knobs which must have gone missing on your machine. Hence the thread showing. The word ELLIOTT EMBOSSED in the ends. Rare as Rocking horse POO of course. David and Lily.

Great channel Geoff, please keep the projects coming. I like the accuracy, the attention to detail, the care to restore properly and the eventual use of these machines for their original purpose. Computers are great but machines are fantastic; for everyone out there lets not forget our engineering heritage and the machines that made that possible.
@lewislea99843 жыл бұрын
Being a tattoo artist and also a bass guitar luthier in the past, working with metal never happened to me (until now) I got an Elliot 2G pillar drill from a free cycle website, I went to collect pallets, but this guy saw how I was looking at his drill. Asking 10,000 questions. I just bonded with the machine instantly, and he gave it to me, although it was working, I knew that I would have to service it and once I saw the latest paint job was cracking then I'm having to fully restore it. Not sure what year this guys drill is but it's different to mine, the base and table on mine seem more substantial, certainly feel it, also mine has a part- plastic cog at the back of the gearbox, it's dated 1951 and has a 3 phase motor built by hoover in Scotland. I've completed disassembly now (£200) in parts broken by me, obviously a couple of custom fabricated replica parts had to be machined on a lathe. With no lathe to speak of personally, no knowledge, virtually no information...(never even heard of a "gear pulley") I'm currently stripping, respraying all of the cast parts (not trying to turn it into a brand new drill)... Even if I could it defeats its purpose to me, I want Elliot to look like the 70 Yr old guy that he is. I'm just happy to be a part of his history, and I intend to use him, see what he can do. This guy's video diary is invaluable to me, I couldn't do it without these videos, as reference and he clearly knows what he's doing. So thanks for putting up such a comprehensive and thorough education for me, and the other freaks digging vintage industrial machinery... 👍👍💪🙏

Hi man! Just came upon your channel by chance. Great restorations, nice videos and humorous narrative. Thank you! Why only two first Black Sabbath albums? What's wrong with Master Of Reality? ;)
@alext90675 жыл бұрын
Your narration circa 16:00 describes our true gods. This is what we should be worshiping and giving respect to. I'm in the US, where every other sentence is "I don't want to get technical". My question is WHY NOT? Where do they think all their laborsaving equipment came from? Their phones, TVs, air conditioning, refrigeration, automobiles, etc. Some magic man in the sky? It's quite disgusting, really. You have the right idea. Keep up the good work.

Okay Mr. Croker, you've set a new high standard in resto-porn with this series. Except porn makes it sound raunchy or inelegant. This series was the Citizen Kane of restoration video. Perfectly lit, edited and executed. The narration was fun enough to listen without watching, and the timing of the cuts and sound effects was inspired. Sorry "This Old Tony", but you may need to step aside and big Kiwi eat!

What a beautiful result Geoffrey, you have certainly made a silk purse from a sows ear in this restoration. I must have missed the episode about the table recasting. I will have to go back and look for it. Can anybody tell me what episode it was in? There were so many! But i sat and watched them all back to back or so i thought. Can anyone suggest why KZbin stick episodes way out of order in the what's up next column? Buggered if I can see any rhyme or reason to it. Come on KZbin get the fucking things in order!!!!

Much respect for saving another timeless machine. Sad how equipment made as much as 100 + years ago can last indefinitely but with all of our new technology, we can consider ourselves fortunate if new machines survive their warranty period. Cheers

7 years ago I furnished my woodworking workshop with shiny new British made machines thinking they would last me until the grave. I now cry at how bad they are. The drill press specifically is virtually unusable. I should have taken my time renovating older machines originally. A great result with this drill. If the Land Rover renovation is half as good as this it will be twice as good as the old Land Rover outside my house!

Very well done but that was expected after your Myford series. An Elliot 10 M shaper would go well with that drill press I think. :-) But a video about exactly how you went about reproducing the placards and who did the work for you would be very helpful. Two book recommendations that would be extremely useful since you've already got the Myford. George H. Thomas The Model Engineers Workshop Manual and J.A. Radford Improvements and Accessories for your Lathe who lived in roughly your area of the world. The GHT book would keep you busy for the next 10 or so years I'd think. Some very well thought out and highly useful additions for the Myford lathes. Both books would likely be the cheapest from Tee Publishing in the U.K.

In fact, Geoffrey, your are helping setting up the foundation for a world-wide coming movement to recycle legacy machinery of all sorts, as we are moving toward the post abundant fossil fuels age, no longer able to keep manufacturing and throwing into junkyards. Your comment on how much energy was involved in restoring the device, comes neatly with a recently circulating thesis in thermodynamics postulating "no energy-producing device will produce sum useful energy exceeding the total energy put earlier into constructing it": the-fifth-law.com/pages/press-release?sm_ink=georestoresdrill Having said that, no matter how your restoration was energy-intensive, it was less in energy footprint than letting diesel trucks lift up coal somewhere in the world, take it to steel smelters, and the rest of the process of making anew. Well done, Geoffrey. Please keep these role-model, exceptional-quality projects coming.
