In the gear manufacturing industry there is a professional "gear shaper" machine with all the necessary mechanisms already built in. No need for a DIY setup...

I have basically built the same thing to cut gears but instead of wires I’m using a geared rack win the same module teeth as the gear I want cut and the gear that rides on the rack doesn’t need to be the same size diameter as the gear I’m cutting

Little help, please! I bought (supposedly) pure nickel strip from eBay, but my solution will not turn green! It’s clear, and there are now blackish flakes settling on the bottom of my container. I’ve tried several strips, and they dissolve, but no green. The “nickel” strip attached to the negative cable has turned black as well. Have I simply bought crap nickel? (BTW, my solution is 10% white vinegar and one Tbs. non-iodized salt.) Thanks for any feedback!

So copper wont plate directly to steel. What about aluminum, or stainless steel? Does anyone know of a metal which won't dissolve into solution? This is the big problem with electrolysis machines used to generate hydrogen gas from water. Whatever metal you use dissolves into solution polluting the water and eventually stalling out the process. If we had a metal which would not dissolve into solution that would be ideal. Both anode and cathode in the electrolysis machine could be made of that. Alternatively even a combination of metals like copper and steel would be better as one would not be able to plate the other. Though steel is not ideal as it is already prone to corrosion. So ideally if there is no metal which will not dissolve, then the best alternative would be two metals which can't plate each other, which are also corrosion resistant.

16:20 this part here can be Short cutted if you use a Car battery charger instead of a samsung/phone charger. 2 hours cut down to 35 mins with small parts like that. However you have to move this outside or into a well ventilated area and somewere you know somebody won't touch it as it is more dangerous because there's more amperage and more voltage current being pushed through car charger unit to kick start electrolysis

All I will say as someone who has studied Chemistry at degree level, is do your research when mixing various chemicals and metals and type the acronym COSHH and safety data sheets. You can inadvently create some pretty horrific chemicals with household chemicals if you don't have a good understanding of elemental chemistry. For example electrolysis of hydorchloric acid (HCL) even in dilute form will produce Hydrogen and Chlorine gas, one goes bang and the other will gas you to death LOL ! Additionally HCL is one of the strongest acids out there and will eventually break down metal alloys, so the likes of stainless steel is an alloy of Iron, Vanadium and Chromium. So pickling stainless steel in acid for a time will leach out Chromium into solution forming Chromate which is a particularly nasty element in solution form. Interestingly enough whilst Nickel seems harmless on the surface it is actually classified as being carcinogenic to humans in compound and metallic form, not many people are aware of that as the perception of Nickel being used in coins means it must be safe of course. Not being a party poopy, have fun it what you do, be responsible and dispose of chemical at treatment centres and do your research before blindy mixing chemicals at home, the Internet has all the answers although a fundamental school chemistry book is worth owning for reference and CHATGPT of course now !

I have been using HCL to clean old cast iron skillets. They come out looking OK, go right into water to rinse away residual acid, come out fine... then flash rust. So I started trying to neutralize residual acid with aqueous solutions of bases. Drano, NaOH flakes, NaHCO3, Na2CO3... they all leave a coating of black muck on the iron. I tried burning it off on a gas grill, just hardened it. It can be scrubbed off before it hardens, can be removed with sandpaper or wire brush after it dries and hardens. What do you think it is? My water is from a well, so that is a possible answer. How do you treat your iron pieces after they come out of the HCL? Thanks for any answers.
@GeoffreyCroker
@GeoffreyCroker 2 ай бұрын
You are etching the iron with the HCL, massively increasing its surface area. That’s why it’s rusting so fast. Neutralising the acid is doing nothing. HCL turns into gas at high concentrations, so if it’s dry, the ‘acid’ is gone. If you must use an acid, use something mild like vinegar along with a wire brush. And all acids dilute in water anyway, there’s no need to neutralise anything just rinse it off with water.
@Larry-d3i
@Larry-d3i 2 ай бұрын
@@GeoffreyCroker Thanks, Geoff. Any clue as to what the chemistry of the black deposit I am getting is? These old skillets have a build up of "patina" from years of use, so that could be a factor. As I said, no neutralization, flash rust, with it the 1/8 inch thick black deposit. I plan to try your way with several water baths to dilute the acid, possibly with a surfactant added.

@@GeoffreyCroker This could be what I am seeing. The Massart method of preparation of magnetite as a ferrofluid, is convenient in the laboratory: mix iron(II) chloride and iron(III) chloride in the presence of sodium hydroxide.[7] It's interesting stuff. Right now there is a big interest in cast iron cookware and how to make it non stick and care for it. This is because of poor quality non stick cookware that doesn't last, and the scare of what the non stick coatings present as a health threat. As usual on the internet, one will find just as much or more wrong information as right.
