I bought a vevor mag drill the last time you were hawking them on here. Variable speed, reverse, great product. Your video last time said that it included an array of annular cutters but I only got 3. They changed the ad after i ordered mine. Still worth it though. I suggest double checking the ad for the cutters. I used mine yesterday. Its bloody good value.

Back in the early 1980's I was working on a job that involved fixing a lighting gantry onto a Victorian building (The Corn Exchange in Cambridge UK) the beams were wrought iron and it was taking two Rotabroch cutters to make one hole, the first one got blunted on the outside layer of the beam then the next one was blunted on the other side on breakthrough. We had a bucket of these 25mm cutters and a whole bunch of them was going off for sharpening every day. I have a load of photographs I took while up in the rafters of that building as it is not often one gets such a chance to get up close too such buildings.

An advantage to annular cutter efficiency is not only not cutting the center metal out, but that as the cut diameter gets smaller, the cutting speed needs to be increased as the small lips are over pressured from the slow rotation. Since there is no center, all of that is eliminated. Normally, with twist drills and bigger holes (1/2”, 12 mm) I drill the center out first, to eliminate that grinding in the center. I don’t have a mag drill, but I use them (mostly carbide as I do a lot of stainless) on my mill. I keep thinking about getting one of these. I’d like to see them put a variable speed dial on this as they have on some of their other models. You’re definitely right about the coolant. The more the better. Particularly with stainless and chrome steel, or something like 1045. Slower speeds really are better for those as well. But most home shops won’t likely be using those, though I do.

Hi John , this machine is really a broach ,the little blue plug on the side is for the coolant to enter the inside of the Broach cooling it completely as it flows through , not like spraying coolant on the outside , used many over the years as a boilermaker, from old JC Boilermaker. 6:12 6:15

Hey John, yes, I appreciate how the coolant system is supposed to work. As I said, I just prefer doing it by spray bottle. (I might change my tune if drilling 30mm plate regularly - but none of the chips were coming off blue - so the HSS was under 220C while in operation. And I was flooding it - I wasn't spraying outside generally; I was lifting and flooding.)

The best mag drill I've used would have to be the millwaukee cordless mag drill. The magnet is mechanical, so no worries about power failure, and it lets go. You should do a demo of millwaukee 18v mag drill, John. You will be impressed.

If you drill/cut a lot of holes I'd suggest you'll end up wanting both, at least that's where I'm at with a couple 100-year-old drill presses. sitting in their own corners of my shop.

I can only hope this magdrill shows up in my local "Harbor Freight" store so I can enjoy it's performance. I've got two drill presses in my shop, one will take up to 3/8ths drills, the other will drill up to one inch center cutting bits with that 135 degree split points. I've got annular cutters for my Bridgeport which takes R-8 collets and would enjoy using a Mag drill rather than having to clamp down the work when it's rather large compared to my 9 by 42 inch "table" and have the air driven "water soluble oil" spray coolant system. Extra annular cutters is a bonus, reducing the resharpening of said cutters. A good diamond hone keeps them sharp easily enough.
