Great video, the moving the left hip back at transition was a huge eye opener for me. I've watched probably 15 videos on how to eliminate the early extension in the past week, and this is the one that seems to illustrate the solution much more clearly.

Yes! I was going to comment the same thing. He actually explains why it’s happening. I haven’t seen any other channel mention moving the lead hip back. Now I completely understand the concept and it all finally makes sense.

Yup… I finally got the nerve to watch my swing on video. I’m a five handicap but I definitely have a slight early extension that I never knew about. Especially on a full swing. Been trying to fix it hitting into my net but nothing was working until I saw this video. Keep the trail hip back and match the left hip to that in the downswing. Brilliant. Thank you!

Great lesson and works when I practice swing - put a ball there and the hips thrust towards the ball so frustrating!!! Ahhhhh! I'm gonna have to try the wedge under my foot next paractice/range session - always difficult if you go range with a pal and your skytracking your drives lol

Thanks Chris, great explanation and video. Just come back to golf after a long break and my local pro in a lesson said the odd shank on irons was a result of early extension, and I’ve been scouring around for a good video on what ‘swing thought’ would work best, and this worked a treat today. Thanks for posting such high quality and understandable tuition, and really like the tuition graphics in your more recent videos. Cheers

Great video Chris. I've always suffered from this but never thought about moving the left hip back at transition. I've always rotated with my right hip which is causing the problem with me. Going to take a lot of practice to change but at least I know where to start.

Thank you so much for this. I have struggled with early extension since I started and have struggled to find a drill that works for me. This evening I was at the range and tried the drill with realigning the back pockets and wow what a difference it made. I seem to respond well to "feel" drills and this one is definitely going into the practice routine!

I just got off the range doing this drill. Having the right heel step on the club while swinging and not letting it drop. Wow. I noticed it asap. My shots were very solid and not a pull or push. Wanna ask u one thing about this ... is it more a common problem for a person with too extended posture (hands high-club extending the hands-no angle from shaft/arm) type or the one with extreme low posture (hands very low-huge angle between shaft and arm) ?? Would like to understand the common cause of this IF there is one ..... thx so much for yet another great video ;)

Out of the myriad of KZbin videos I've viewed, this is the first one that so clearly explains exactly how you clear the hips. Thank you for helping my game. Is it reasonable to consider the hip motion as a sequence of rotations that have a different pivot point at each stage of the sequence? For example, during the takeaway, the hips rotate about a pivot point that is at the center of the pelvis such that the left hip goes toward the ball the same amount the right hip moves away. Then, at the transition, the pivot point now becomes the right hip so that the left hip comes back into line with the right hip. Finally, somewhere between first and second parallel, the pivot point shifts to the left hip so that the pelvis can rotate square to the target. Perhaps this is over-complicating matters, but teaching hip motion in this manner would seem to make more sense.
@bradfarmer2941
@bradfarmer2941 4 жыл бұрын
Your hips are fused together, therefore isolating the thought of the right vs the left hips is futile. Instead, try to think of the relation of the hips to the shoulders. If the hips extend early, then the shoulders rise vertically. When this happens we naturally tend to throw the club. Hence the hook. However, when we increase the hip flexion, we tend to maintain the wrist hinge and delay the squaring of the club. Now, to square the club we must eventually elevate the shoulders so that the club head can be delivered to the ball and our wrists can rotate. Sequence is king in golf. You can even try this phenomenon in your chair if you hold your hands in front and flex or extend away from them you will see the natural relationship. What Chris is trying to demonstrate is the sequence of the hip turn. By maintaining pressure on the right heel, we can increase hip flexion instead of extending the hips and flipping the club. The last component to this, that chris did not mention, is that we cannot just slide to the left. If we did so, then our shoulders would elevate too much and we would not be able to rotate. Keep in mind that our bodies do not like to maintain tension in muscles too much. Sliding left, rotating left, and also elevating the shoulders does not allow for rotation of the shoulders. When we do this we get fat shots or push fades because we get stuck inside and cannot square the club face. Hope this helps!

Early extension has something to do with the core strength, isn't it? For senior seniors and juniors (kids), when fire at full speed a lot of them would have difficult time to maintain the spine angle and posture. In other words, certain core muscles are required to keep the right foot on the ground in the transition beginning the downswing. Correct?

This affliction is so common with amateurs. Hips come in...chest goes back. All kinds of mishits. Like Chris says, can be a number of causes...tight hamstrings and calf muscles, unable to perform a deep squat, weak core, etc.

It must be some kind of magic trick ... how do you know each thing in turn that I need to correct as my ball striking gets better and better. I lost a tournament this previous weekend because I kept hitting each iron 20 to 30 yards longer than I did a month ago ..because of your instruction .. I hit a drive on the final par 5 of the tournament that we nearly declared lost .. 545 yards uphill dogleg right .. I was about to go back to re-tee when one of my competitors yelled at me to ask what ball I was playing, when I answered him he pointed to my ball,, it was 185 yards from the center of the green.. THE LONGEST DRIVE OF MY LIFE. I think next year could be the best golfing year of my life.

I have seen numerous videos of my swing and that has not been the case for me. Extending early pulls my hands closer to my body, steepens the shaft angle, and increases likelihood of hitting on the toe.

I have been playing with improving on this tendency for the last 12 months, it is my conclusion that there is a better way describe "why"someone would early extend. Many if not most golfers want to hit the ball hard and far and it is instinctual to want to use your legs to do so on the downswing. Players will stand up thru the shot causing the pelvis to go toward the ball thus early extension. It is in my opinion that is the main culprit. A player must learn how to use the legs in a better manner later in the swing allowing the pelvis to stay on plane and rotate open more before using the power of the legs. Good luck disputing this finding.
@kingshark5938
@kingshark5938 5 жыл бұрын
Can't really dispute that, but can tell the reason for it. People do have the hit factor and want to blast the ball, but that is doing damage to their feel for the club head and swing action. Plus, oems are making swing weight light, so people can't feel the club head properly and are in full hit mode, vs them knowing and learning how to feel the load, slot, and release. I see people all the time in the wrong swing weighted clubs, and most don't know what I'm talking about. If people get fitted properly vs just buying off the rack and hitting the course, they can fix a lot of faults.

It's pretty easy to keep the bum back during the downswing in SLOW MOTION, but the golf swing is NOT slow motion. How do I keep it back and not come out of my posture during a full swing, at full speed, when focused on the impact position?
@ChrisRyanGolf
@ChrisRyanGolf 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Mike, yeah this is really tough, can sometimes be a case if just slowly increasing the speed whilst continuing to focus on the correct move, this takes time. The other thing we have to factor in is that many of us aren’t physically in a position to do this as we add speed and force to the swing 👍

Your trying to fix the symptoms not the root cause. Early extension comes from not knowing how to start the transition. If you start with your hands, you will pull on the butt of the club, the shaft will steepen and the only way to hit the ball is to early extend.
@ChrisRyanGolf
@ChrisRyanGolf 5 жыл бұрын
Sometimes fixing the cause can be better! I’d agree that there are multiple reasons why this could happen, your explanation is correct in many cases, but also doesn’t cover physical limitations the golfer may have. Unfortunately a 6 minute video doesn’t allow anyone to cover the entirety of the topic in discussion 👍
