The absolute last person who should have been race-swapped was Snape. Snape and James have a mutual dislike of each other partly because of their mutual love of Lily- a white girl. Now race swap one of them, and you've got a black guy obsessing over a white girl, and a white guy and his group of white friends always ganging up on Snape including hanging him upside down under a tree. And then to top it off the black guy joins the wizard equivalent of white supremacists. This is a disaster of a casting. They're gonna have to change a bunch of plot points, everyone involved's race, or just lean into the Jim Crow-esque visuals.

Many in the US don't realise how small the black population in the UK is, just under 4% with most living in London or major southern cities. There's more South East Asians by a long shot. Or they could go with an unknown but very talented actor who's been auditioned to death to prove himself with multiple screen tests like when Clayne Crawford was cast as Riggs in 'Lethal Weapon' and everyone (including myself) was already dismissing anyone who could follow what Mel Gibson did but then Crawford managed to pull it off and became the primary reason to watch the show.

An understudy who became more popular and a better singer than the 'star' so shared the role. As a young kid I saw her in it and never forgot. There's only 3.9% black people in the UK, majority in southern England (UK 88% white). Though BBC/adverts would lead us to believe numbers are akin to the US. I'm seeing it in Aussie adverts too. Three currently broadcast with black people in them are UK made with Aussie voice dubs (UK housing, cars, heating etc). I'm hoping it's a phase. We are multi cultural but our immigrant black population is miniscule. Ditto indigenous though according to census where government allows self identification it's increased to 2.9% since the previous and by 25 to 30% in most States usually younger people with numbers vastly above what births/deaths account for. Identity politics won't change truth.

There would be cause to make the series to fit everything from the books onto the screen. They had to leave a lot out of the movies due to time constraints alone. Not to mention some things that were changed. What IMO would've been best is a high quality animated series that had everyone and everything look exactly as it did in the books and to follow them exactly. (IMO, if 75% of the scenes require cgi anyway, it might as well be animated).

The executives and writers are obviously making this casting choice to drum up controversy to market the TV show that no one asked for and is way too early to make since the Harry Potter movies were completed nearly 13 years ago and they were good. At least with Percy Jackson it makes sense to do a TV adaptation since the movies suck. As for the actor I think Alan Rickman was irreplacable no one white or black could ever play him better or as good then he did.

I'm not 100% against the idea of adapting Harry Potter into a TV show, in theory. Personally, I always thought that was the way to go, given how much stuff would get cut from the films. The big problem with the films was that they starting making them before all of the books came out, which means they didn't know exactly how everything was going to play out when they made the earlier films. This resulted in several scenes being cut, that later turned out to be very important to the plot of later books. Harry receiving Sirius Black's magic mirror, after his death in The Order of the Phoenix, is one of the biggest examples of this. That scene was cut from the fifth film, but then Harry just randomly has a broken shard of it in Deathly Hallows, which is how they manage to contact Dumbledore's brother, who sends Dobby in to rescue them from Malfoy Manor. It's an integral part of that film's plot that is just not set up at all by the previous films, leaving anyone who hasn't read the books completely confused as to what's going on. This would be the biggest benefit of a new TV adaptation. They would know which scenes are important and need to be kept in, and would have the screen time to cut less content in general. That being said, my expectations for how the show will actually pan out are rock bottom. Even ignoring how bad a lot of the more recent Harry Potter related content has been (The Cursed Child can burn in hell), this would have been extremely difficult to pull off successfully. By the time you throw in all the inevitable Current Year nonsense, that this casting rumor all but confirms will be present, then this show has no chance. I don't even feel sorry for JK Rowling at this point. She keeps bending over backwards to virtue signal to the progs, all while complaining about how they're still trying to cancel her for understanding how biology works. She's the one who bent the knee to these people in the first place; first with the "Dumbledore is gay" retcon, then gaslighting people over the Cursed Child Hermione race swap, then allowing all the ridiculous wokeness in Hogwarts Legacy, and finally this nonsense. She wanted these people in her fanbase, so she can deal with them trying to smear her and ruin her life.
