When I was 16 I did alot of freestyle rock climbing. One day to get around a crevasse I went out on this lump of rock thatbstuck out the side of this hill and got stuck. It was a four feet leap up and I couldn't just slide down because i was off to the side and it was about a 150 foot drop to the trees. It took hours for me to gather the nerve to make the jump and I didn't go rock climbing again until I was 19. This review brought back all that pit in the stomach feelings I had that day.
@keffa1982 Жыл бұрын
One of the great things about this movie is that the minute it came out half the climbing community on the internet turned round and screamed "But they had a way down all along" (One of them makes a weighted friction descent using the rope looped around the pole to the framed section with the internal ladder) but that is the beauty of the tragedy it portrays. They didn't consider that option because they couldn't see the woods for the trees to some degree. When you are in a high stress situation you don't always see every path before you. Yes the film had other flaws (If you can get reception at the base of the tower you are going to also get it at the top, radio signals go in all directions including up and most cellular signals don't die off till you are about 5000ft in the air) but the fact they did not consider that option was not one of them.
@Jonathan-ih7qp Жыл бұрын
Yup, not even a climber but as soon as I saw that they had enough rope to loop around the pole I thought why don't they just do that. I haven't watched the movie yet, so I had assumed they addressed some reason they couldn't have done this.
@jwt-nu3ei Жыл бұрын
They needn’t had risked that. They could have tied the phone to the drone with the text waiting to send.
@Power5 Жыл бұрын
You say that high stress leads to tunnel vision, but if these girls are free climbers, they definitely can cope with high stress situations. I mean they somehow got off the sheer rock face that their friend died on. This was the same type of situation. The first thing they would have thought of after collecting themselves would be to do a friction descent. One girl goes down while other waits at top. I mean it must have been easy to get her from the top anyway, they didn't even show it in the movie. I liked when they flew the drone at semi truck height like it was coming in for a landing on a runway. That and the fact that no one was really driving around the area at all until the exact moment they were flying the drone to the diner. And instead of one girl using the binoculars to be on the lookout, both were glued to the tiny screen.

Having worked in construction in my late teens walking narrow beams on coal fired power plants between 300-1100 feet up, this film is as good as it gets replicating the sick feeling in the pit of your stomach you have to ignore to keep from looking down and tripping. That said, there is a weird phenomenon that happens when you’re that high up- the objects below don’t appear real anymore, and you tend to get careless until something shakes you out of the trance.
@toothgrinder2760 Жыл бұрын
I was a tower hand for a cellular company. I climbed mono poles, guyed towers and lattice towers. You’re right, once you’re over a couple hundred feet, everything on the ground looks like a miniature set. The earth has a like a hyper realistic look to it. It’s hard to explain to someone the experience, if you’ve never been that high up, with nothing but a climbing harness between you and the ground ☠️.

One idea that came to me was to climb up to the light on top and when it turned on, hold your hand in front of it in the direction of the town and do an SOS with it by covering it and then uncovering it in the pattern of SOS. It's three short pulses of light (cover it, uncover it quickly) and then three slow ones (cover it, uncover it slowly). You would have to wait for the light to turn on again to make it through the fast and slow pulses but it would be seen in the distance and recognized by anyone paying attention. And then maybe wave your hand in front of the light all crazy like as well at certain intervals so people realize a person is up there making the signal and that it wasn't programmed to blink in an SOS pattern.

Or unscrew it. There would be someone out next day to replace it. For airplanes safety people get paid to check these lights every night. Fucking stupid premise

An important thing with this movie, especially in regard to the realism, and the contrast with other movies, is Virginia Gardner, the blonde actress, and her commitment to the role. I have seen Gardner in other things, most notably "Runaways" a Marvel adjacent teen superhero show on Hulu, Project Almanac, where she played the high school girlfriend and one of the newer Halloweens, where she is the babysitter who gets killed for making out with her boyfriend on the job. What I am saying is that she generally plays generic cute teen blondes. She doesn't play action heroes, or athletes, or soldiers, but slender, young women cast for their conventionally attractive looks. And as you can see in the video, she has definitely put on some muscle. She looks like an athletic person who takes free climbing seriously, when that is not her on-screen appearance to date. Okay, yes, her breasts get a lot of the attention, but her character is a social media personality, who posts climbing videos, and deliberately was working the cleavage during the climb in this film, in order to get the views and likes. But for the most part, she is physically believable as an expert climber. This is rather a contrast from the usual run of Hollywood body-positivity shills, who use that as an excuse to thwart the "male gaze" by not working out or dieting for their roles.

@5925-p1b Жыл бұрын
No offense, but she definitely doesn't look like an expert climber. Climbers have very little body fat. Just watch a competition, those girls are ripped. The fact that she was free soloing that wall in the beginning suggests that she's not just a enthusiastic amateur either, but a very experience climber. Free soloist are the best of the best and none of them look like her. She looked great, but nowhere near like a climber, especially not an elite one.

I'm a little torn about this one. Yes, the movie was well made and overall very entertaining. You could clearly see that the creative minds behind it put a lot of effort into making their vision work. I was impressed what they achieved with a relatively small budget. On the other hand, I had problems warming up to the characters. They were a little too stereotypical. I understand why they were written this way. It helped, pointing out their sharp contrasts and it heightened the tension for conflict. But let me explain, why it didn't fully work for me: Especially the blond chick was hard to identify with and sometimes seemed more like a caricature than a real person. I think, she was written a little too reckless. She put her friend in very dangerous situations without even thinking about it for one second. That made it made it hard for me to care about what happens to her. She was so fixated on delivering an exciting Instagram story, even if it could cost her friend's life. It's one thing if you put yourself in danger to generate likes and views. But doing it to your best friend who is still a mental wreck?! I'm not saying, people like this don't exist. Instagram and Tiktok have shown us again and again that some people will literally do anything for attention. But those aren't the kind of people I'm rooting for in real life - and they sure aren't the kind of people I would root for in a movie. So it really would have helped if the blond chick would have been written with just a little more depth and nuance. Introduce her as the typical daredevil, but after they get trapped on the tower, show us another side of her that makes her into a more interesting/engaging character. I'm not saying, the writers didn't try to do that, yet for me it didn't work. The script needed a little more finesse in that part. Greetings from Germany :=)

Hey Drinker, or anyone else reading this, if you like movies about climbers who go through horrible survival situations AND it really happened, I suggest checking out the 2003 documentary Touching The Void. It's the true tale and recounting of Joe Simpson and Simon Yates trying to descend from Siula Grande in Peru and how it goes horribly wrong. Having looked up and read Simpsons book on what happened after watching this documentary, I was shocked to learn that not only were things even more challenging to survive but even when you think you may be out of dangers way there is always more around the corner. I highly recommend tracking this one down. I have not looked to see if it's streaming anywhere but I hope it is.
