A cheap plastic or metal conical funnel, about the diameter of a large dinner plate, collects dew and delivers water below the evaporation layer for deep root irrigation in arid environments. DRIPS is a free open source dew collection project for agriculture in arid regions. DRIPSproject.com.

To prevent clogging I'd put a metal mesh covering the dish at top, and hold it in place with a couple inches of 1/4 inch pebbles. The mesh will prevent clogging and the pebbles will allow the water to filter down to the plate while providing shadow to prevent evaporation once the ambient temperature rises.

Metal is expensive but has 2 added benefit : 1) conducting heat, the screw below ground is being chilled by cool (and now moist) soil... as the soil water evaporates it cools the soil and the collector, which in turn condenses water, which goes into the soil... etc. i.e. a virtuous circle. 2) the shiny metal surface reflects most radiation (visible and IR) which keeps the ground cool around the water "reservoir"... the trick is to find the right metal (alloy)... Clogging will be an issue so close to the ground (but where humidity is greatest)... granular clogging material should not impede water absorption until the column is fully packed... a small screen would prevent vegetation from entering...moving the collector every x weeks or months should keep it operating nominally... keep up the good work!

Besides the final outcome, which is impressive, what is of importance is also the low implementation cost comparing with other solutions being proposed to overcome irrigation issues in arid environments

You could use something similar to this, with subsurface textiles to create an artificial water table and keep the water at the roots. We had a really dry season in Texas this spring and summer, but plenty of dew. Our 4 rain barrels were exhausted, but when it did rain we were only teased with a couple dozen gallons. A mixed system using the screw tubes from these directing water to individual plants, hooked to irrigation tubes, with an above ground collector "sail" could have gathered the regular dew AND the occasional rain, acted as a suburban privacy fence, and watered our now dead garden.

Great video. But it could do without the ear splitting, speaker popping sound effects.

Why don't you build a kite or balloon to collect water in a cloud by using solar and bring it down with plastic tubes

a man-made dew collection system is perfect for collecting water from San Francisco fog. Our tall eucalyptus trees on Mount Sutro collect water from fog and drip, drip drip all summer long.
