In the first half, we see how the lives and behaviors of the characters six years after the incident. The first half is very important, because it is the build-up which leads to the suspenseful second half. Just like Psycho (1960) where the first half is the build-up which leads to the suspenseful second half. The director also takes time on the relationship between the heroine Rani (Meena) and Saritha in the first half. So when Rani realizes the betrayal of Saritha in the second half, we realize that Rani is absolutely heartbroken since she saw Saritha as her own young sister. So when Saritha puts her face down in front of Georgekutty outside the court, she is admitting her defeat and guilt in front of Rani, Georgekutty, Anju, and Anu.

You misunderstood the copyright. It's not anything to do with copyright, but Georgekutty got the scriptwriter to publish a story in which he can later prove in the court that the police read the book and was using the plot to frame Georgekutty and family. Also, at the end, Georgekutty saved some of the boy's bones to burn to ashes because there is a religious ceremony after death where a close relative submerges the person's ashes/bones in a river.

Also, in the last part, there are some cultural nuances (Georgekutty gave some part of the bone to do rituals to Geetha by post, not directly) And it's not about the copyright issue. The real incident presented by the police came in a book, how can the court believe it ? Moreover, the DNA test tells, its not Varun's body. Agin DEAD END :)
