Crawler Canyon Competitor Spotlight: the MST CFX-W that is Blue Sky High

I little component breakdown, some rumination on the quasi-intangibles, and hopefully just a little bit of an enlightening look at the underrated CFX-W.

Passed one of these up for the Phoenix. I will say, I do really enjoy the simplicity of the MST chassis layout. Especially compared to the other portal equipped tenth scale rigs available. I have said it before, I will say it again. I do not feel MST sees enough recognition for the CFX platform in any of its iterations. I have the small CFX, and the CFX-WS. I am plenty pleased with the quality of the kits, the body on the CFX-WS in particular.

It's a bummer MST hasn't "caught on" here in the states. The bodies are cool across the board, and the platforms themselves are really solid. Seriously considering adding another MST to the fleet, at least if I get the urge to add a second non-portal rig. The Ecto says it's lonely.

They need to update their transmission to mount the motor lower down and include a dig function or two speed and I think it might not get passed by so much. Not sure about local parts support either, but that might put off people as well.

@@carltonr3417 Parts support is a big issue here. Definitely agree with the motor position, although it is mounted up front which is very nice. Just a bit high as you say. An optional 2-speed or dig function would be great. Or even a way to add over/under drive as I am not sure such parts are available.

I really like this truck but I’m put off getting one because of how high the motor is mounted. Does it affect its centre of gravity being that high? Surely they could’ve come up with a better design than they have. I like the servo on axle design and the motor is high to clear the servo, but why not move the transmission back and put the motor lower down? Just a thought.

In what must be a result of just pure geometrical wizardry, the CFX-W has the second lowest CG of any rig in my fleet, behind only the straight-axled Ecto. I had thought the same thing-- that motor is high-- but I guess relative to the rest of the truck, it's low enough. Heavier wheels are a must, as the kit plastic wheels weigh like 7g each. The CFX-W is a surprise performer. Now honestly contemplating a straight axle version, if just for the super low CG and how clean the axles look.

That RC4WD "scale" Rancho link is every bit as neat as it is annoying to adjust. Getting just the part I want to turn to... turn, while adjusting it... ugh. Once it's set, it's super cool though. I get lazy when it comes to drag links, so most every rig here has an old Lunsford 3mm turnbuckle on it. Takes 20-30 seconds to get the steering straight, and I never have to mess with it again.
