Oscar Isaac's character is so well done. You initially feel like you're gonna hate him and that he's gonna be a villain. You then start feeling bad for him as a guy who got caught up in the same bullshit Ryan Gosling's character ends up in. He genuinely wanted to protect his wife and son and I think that is the best part. He wasn't just another stereotypical abusive husband that most movies would have made him out to be

I always thought that the elevator kiss happens because the Driver knows that she'll never look at him the same way again, once she's seen the violence he's capable of. So he takes that final moment to share that tenderness with her, knowing that the moment will never come again.

I adore this movie. The colors, the writing, the soundtrack, it’s just so freaking good. I love how mysterious RG character is in this and how the romance is played out through colors and emotion. The red and blue colors are even in the love interests apartment or her clothes, the settings carry on the color scheme of the lights that show throughout the film. Artistically it’s just beautiful

Absolutely fantastic movie ... the cinematography, the music, the editing, the subtle performances, those short but intense moments of action. So good. The first movie that I saw Oscar Isaac in and he stole the show even back then. Absolutely love it. 10/10

I love how sparingly the gore is used in this film. The violence feels so much more intense and almost like a little treat to the audience, due to most scenes at the beginning of the movie being really chill and calm.

I love that 100 Movies Bucket List poster. It’s like a cross between an advent calendar and a scratch-off ticket. Also, the cool tone of Drive is what makes it memorable. Rather than making another overheated action film, Nicolas Refn made a detached, arthouse music video. Formalistic, stylized, and quiet, which ironically gives the emotion a greater impact.

Apparently, one of the reasons while people are divided over this film is because of how peoples expectations were set. I think the trailer kinda made it look like a pure action movie, so when people didn’t get an action movie they were disappointed

This is one of my favourite films of the last decade. Great film and great soundtrack. The main character is a roll back to the classic quiet anti-hero's of years gone by. Like something out a western. Personally I prefer the fact that nothing is revealed about him or his past. Sometimes it's just better to know nothing. For me a definite 9/10

This is a great, quiet, and timeless movie. My mom often said: "Always be careful of quiet people!" In this movie, her saying is certainly spot on. Ryan Gosling is incredibly good-looking but because he is such a fabulous actor his looks never spoil the characters he plays. Quite the opposite. In real life, he seems to be a mysterious man, too. I can never make up my mind about what to think of him as a person. All I know is when his name comes up, something good is coming :)

He and Irene have a lot of chemistry, but neither need all the words, they do it with their faces and eyes. No words needed. He has demons, what about her demons. He doesn't want to kill anyone, but they are all after Irene and Benicio. He is a guy wanting to protect Irene and Benicio and everyone else is evil. The guy in the elevator was a hitman and he is protecting her. You just saw Nino tell him to go get Gosling.

I was really looking forward to this reaction - one of my all-time favourite films so I'm glad you enjoyed it! The books are worth a read too - Drive and Driven - both relatively short and easy reads, the film isn't a direct remake of either book but they are written in a similar way, minimal dialogue, atmosphere, short bursts of violence and action.
@PalmDesertRock
@PalmDesertRock 2 жыл бұрын
This is a 10 for me. It's main problem in terms of audience reaction like the mixed things you heard about it was due to the marketing, I think. The trailer shows pretty much only the action scenes, so many people walked into it expecting an action flick like Drive Angry or something, which it very clearly is not. People familiar with Winding Refn's prior work kinda knew what they were in for - a film that walks the line between mainstream and arthouse cinema, but if you weren't familiar with the director's work and went to watch this just going off the trailers, then you would've very likely been disappointed. That's not the film's fault. The film itself made a big splash in the cinema enthusiast bubble, but mainstream audiences largely left disappointed. Whoever was responsible for cutting and greenlighting the trailer did a shit job.

Unfortunately the average cinema goer is like that. Especially today. I think if the trailer had shown it closer to the way it is it probably would have made less money. But who knows maybe it would have found its audience. Art house films like this are almost dead in cinemas these days and only seem to find their way to streaming sites. I'm really hoping films like the Northman do well in cinemas and it brings back a bit of a different cinematic experience. I'm really starting to get sick of big budget extravaganzas with a paper thin plot. It's all well and good every now and then but it's pretty much everything nowadays.

The best film of 2011. I think you slightly missed the character's nature ("this guy has demons") - he's a classic Clint Eastwood style strong, virtually silent, hero that only acts when necessary but then with appropriately brutal decisiveness. Winding Refn's follow-up, Only God Forgives, sees him reunited with Gosling in an equally brutal but colder, more calculating tale. Good stuff, my dude!

This is such a good film. It looks amazing and has a great soundtrack/score. The plot is simple but well done. I do think that the Driver's minimal dialogue does make it seem a little weird that a single mom with a small child would feel so comfortable around this guy. But it's not a big problem, still one of the better films I've seen.

Shaun - since you enjoyed this movie so much, you need to check out another film directed by Nicolas Winding Refn called The Neon Demon. I'm not going to tell you what it's about; I want you to go into it as blind as you did this masterpiece. Let's just say I USED to rewatch the Hell out of Drive...until I bought The Neon Demon, and it took over it's spot. (For that matter, you might even NEED to rewatch The Neon Demon as I'm sure you'll pick up something new or different on repeat viewings; as the story is layered.)

I just remember that someone sued the film distributor that showed it because they said the trailer was misleading (for not being like a Fast and Furious type movie) and it promoted violence against the Jewish community. The movie came out in 2011 and in 2017 they were still in litigation as the initial complaint about it misleading was dismissed but the anti-semetic claim raged on. I don't know if it has been resolved but it's part of this movie's crazy history
@Henrik_Holst
@Henrik_Holst 2 жыл бұрын
The case was dismissed in 2018, "dismissed on the merits", which basically here translates to "thrown out due to not even being worth the cost of the paper it was filed on". The sad case with US law though is that as long as you can pay for a lawyer you can drag out court cases for years on end. If any one is interesting in long winding court cases with even less merits than this one then look up SCO vs IBM which started in 2003 and is still going.

Hands down Nicolas Winding Refn's best movie and i believe THE movie that really started the whole retro-wave boom of 2010's, or one of the very pieces of media that inspired whole load of other retro/80's-inspired media like "Hotline Miami" and such. I'd say it's a classic nowdays, very well directed and the tone is just pitch perfect. For such a small movie, it packs a ton of punch. I'd recommend you films of S.Craig Zahler like "bone tomahawk" "brawl on cellblock 99" and "Dragged across concrete"!

If you have time sometime you should maybe give The Neon Demon a shot (it's noted somewhere below). In my opinion you should watch it, even if it's just in your free time because it's on. The first time I saw it I thought it was boring, vapid, and way too into itself up until the 3rd act, and by the end I was like "... what the fxck was that?!". Now I could legit write an essay on it. I'm not sure if N.W. Refn was trying to say all that I get from it about beauty, and consumption, and perception, but he definately said....something with it. Anyways- fantastic video as always. Actually, though I can understand why you would say, 'The Driver lost control', because our modern culture is uncomfortable with violence (Ironically), the truth is- He never did lose control. He was simply the kind of Man who understood dangerous situations require dangerous responses. He was also capable of great empathy and gentleness. Those feelings are not opposed to anger and violence. If you love something, if you value it, you will use whatever means are required to keep it safe.

Albert Brooks as a murdering villain is a unexpected dark performance, especially the scene in the garage with Bryan Cranston. After you give the soundtrack a few listens through I'm convinced you'd go back and give Drive a 10/10

Love this film. Also 'Place beyond the pines' and 'Half Nelson' with Ryan Gosling.

'The place beyond the pines' is beautifully shot. I'm surprised more people haven't seen it considering the cast.

This film is up there with Whiplash, Ford v Ferrari, and Sicario as my favorite movies from the last 10-11 years. Not sure why more people don't react to it.

Oh, never noticed it was Oscar Isaac who played the father ! I LOVE this movie, it's a masterpiece for me. You should check out Too old To Die Young, the TV show the director (Nicolas Winding Refn) did for Amazon Prime, it's fascinating.

Such a brutal film. I loved the song Real Human Being lol 😂 throughout it. Like treating humans like trash. The juxtaposition there or is it saying that this is what it’s meant to be human. Brutal.
