Rutger Hauer himself wrote those lines, of his (tears in the rain) end scene.
@peterengelen2794

The best parts they've changed (originally there are 4 versions), is the replicant shot by Deckard in the back, while running through the glass (in the original 1982, even in the Director's cut, you could easily see a stuntman (or woman?) with a wig!), and the ending. It didn't end by that elevator, but them driving off into the woods, in a bright sky, which didn't made any sense at all. The whole movie is bleak and rainy and most of all no flora! And then suddenly at the end they are driving through these forests and mountains with no concrete buildings at all in side?! Those outdoor shots were btw outtakes from Stanley Kubrick's 'The Shining', filmed for his opening....my apologies, if my English (or grammar) doesn't make any sense, it is not my native tongue, greetings from the Netherlands.

I think Roy saved Deckard for one reason - and this reason only: he didn't want to die alone. He needed someone to speak his final words to, so that he would be remembered by someone, and not lost in time.

Roy saves Deckard because in Deckard's most desperate moment hanging by one hand about to fall to death, he saw himself in Deckard's struggle to survive .. Roy saw himself inside Deckard as someone about to die struggling to the very last moment ... thats why he instinctively saves Deckard, its as if he's saving himself ...
@Lucklaran

@@Jordan-Ramses See, the reason I think this is bunk is a simple one. The replicants wipe the floor with Deckard every time he fights one. Leon would have killed him if not for Rachel, and in the end Roy allows him to live. He is physically inferior to them in almost every respect. If he were a Nexus 6, like the rest of them, the fights should have been far more evenly matched. As for the "maybe he was a Nexus 7" theory, he was alive before the Nexus 6s came out, so no, he couldn't be one of the mythical "Nexus 7s".

@@AudieHolland Yeah, the book actually had humor in it. The whole reason for Deckard wanting to retire the replicants was so he could use the reward money to purchase a "real" sheep so he could feel like he was keeping up with his wealthy neighbors who owned actual living animals as status symbols. In the end, when RD got his sheep he ended up throwing it off his apartment roof, killing it. All that work for nothing... ha-ha.

Glad you enjoyed this, it is rightly considered as a classic. There were 3 main differences to the theatrical cut. 1. Harrison Ford was forced by the studio to do a voice over (he hated doing this to the movie and it shows). 2. They removed the Unicorn dream sequence, so removing the ambiguous ending. 3. After leaving in the lift, there's a happy ending with Deckard & Rachel driving through countryside in daylight (test audiences needing their happy endings). All three of these were done by the studio, against Ridley Scott's vision and objections. There was a "directors cut" that was released years later, that had no input from the director. The Final cut is best, because Ridley Scott was heavily involved in it's creation, ensuring it is the closest to his original vision. One additional change in the final cut - the scene with the dove flying away was reshot or re-editted. The theatrical version of this was filmed in daylight with a clear sky (for time & budget reasons), so it was redone to be at night, in the gloomy cityscape. A much more fitting to the location.

@richieclean 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but you're just plain wrong here. Ridley Scott was absolutely involved in the Director's Cut; it was his opportunity to undo the changes made by the studio. The Unicorn footage wasn't removed by the studio in 1982 because it hadn't been shot yet. It's unused footage from Scott's 1985 film "Legend". The Final Cut is essentially a remaster of the Director's Cut, but with the addition of some elements, and the complete reshooting of the stunt where Zhora runs through the plate glass window. The original used a burly stuntman, and it was pretty obvious it wasn't her, so Ridley Scott brought back Joanna Cassidy (the original actor) and meticulously recreated a scene that had been shot 25 years previously.

I agree, it's not necessary. If Deckard is a replicant, it takes out the contrast between the "humanity" of humans vs. replicants. Deckard is an unemotive, ruthless person--can someone like him honestly condemn replicants for being inhuman? That's the big philosophical question, and if he's a replicant, it undercuts the whole point.

@@melanie62954 but it doesn't. That by all measure of "humanity", they the same as us and indistinguishable. It played into the very heart of the story. What is human? I watched Blade Runner (1982) first run in an old movie theater about a week after it opened. The smell of that old movie theater, really lent itself over to the atmosphere of that film. Watching it for the first time ever, truth be told, i didn't quite understand the core of the story. Cut to 1986, I rented it by chance from the local video cassette store, i took my time watching, doing my best to understand it. By the time i got to the now iconic scene of Roy Batty's improvised " Tears in the Rain " lament, i found hot tears rolling down my swollen cheeks. To this day, whenever i watch that scene, i tear up. Since then, i have re-watched Blade Runner well over 200+ plus times. For myself, it's in my top 10 list of films that i genuinely love and cherish. It's a powerful statement, both in it's story, and it's visuals. There is a part of me, that WISHES, there would be a prequel film about what took place when Batty, Pris, Zhora, and Leon escaped their enslavement of the Off World Colonies as described by Police Chief Bryant when he briefed Decker to investigate in the first act of the film. Next to "ALIEN" (1979), It's my very favorite sci-fi film from Scott, and very favorite sci-fi films in general. Thee BEST.

One of the most influencial movie of all times. All the subsequent Sci-Fi flicks have tried to recreate the athmosphere this masterpiece has successfully conjured. The anime Akira and Ghost in the shell (who themselves have influenced The Matrix) have been partly inspired by Blade Runner. This is a neo-noir sci fi movie. It is heavily influenced by the noir movies of the 40's and 50's (a noir movie being one where the main character, usually a cop or a detective is morally gray, and also there is always a 'femme fatale' he is interested in). Scott has just adapted the type to a futuristic landscape using as a template the Phillip K Dick sci fi story: Do Androids dream of electric sheep? The sets, the mood and especially the syblime synth music by Vangelis make this an unforgettable experience and it is my favorite sci fi movie. Here's the best song, Blade Runner Blues which can be heard when the replicant Pris meets Sebastian, and also when Deckard kills Zhora. Just the best music to listen to on a rainy day. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iITGi6WsicqVm6M

The biggest differences in the theatrical cut are: A voice over narration by a very disinterested sounding Harrison Ford and a more happy ending where Deckard and Rachael drive off into the sunset. The theatrical cut also minimizes the implication that Deckard is a replicant. I actually think the theatrical is good overall. The Final Cut is better but I mostly just see it in a difference in how much you like the idea of Deckard being a replicant and the ending being more ambiguous. And the greater ambiguity without the unicorn dream was great in the original, with the unicorn origami serving only to show that Gaff had been there, but decided to give them a chance at living. But not having the voiceover works just as well, less Hollywood. And not having the happier ending drive away, left their fate more intriguingly to the imagination.

I prefer the original vs the director's/master cut due to the Deckard ambiguity. In the theatrical cut ), he has no family, no friends, no passions and is very robotic in his own way. The Replicants have friends, passions, drives. It raises the question of what does it mean to be human. Directors highlights the ambiguity/Deckard as a Replicant, which in turn move the theme form what it means to be human to is he a replicant.

See, the reason I think this is bunk is a simple one. The replicants wipe the floor with Deckard every time he fights one. If he were a Nexus 6, like the rest of them, the fights should have been far more evenly matched.

The profundity of the statements made about humanity, both objectively good and bad, is weighty and dramatic af. Beautiful noir finish on a such a dystopian neonic grime, this film is a solemn masterpiece. The acting also produced a thin line between mechanical and organic by attributing these traits unstereotypically amongst the two, blurring which is "real" and what "real" even means. A philosophical nightmare and digital dream, the undertones of the cyber cinema strikes at the heart of human existence, thusly has us pinned to our seats waiting for an answer that ultimately never comes but from within ourselves. Another good analysis, guys. Phillip K. Dick writes stories of limitless ambiguity and conundrum. The analysis can go on pretty deeply without losing grip on real world philosophical implications. And the details to discuss are endless, like all the B&W pics on Deckard's piano -- was he collecting memories? If he was a replicant, was he created as a retired Blade Runner, to be called in occasionally, or did he actually have a career? If he was a replicant, Tyrell's dialogue with him about Rachel takes on multiple meanings, because surely Tyrell has helped to build him. And if Roy knows Deckard is a replicant, then his behavior takes on different meaning as well. The sequel goes in a sympathetic if slightly different direction, with less ambiguity but equally interesting implications.

The old photos that sit prominently on Deckard's piano are planted there by the human manipulators to convince Deckard that he's a human with human ancestors .. Its the same trick they pull on Rachel, the only thing that keeps Rachel believing she is human is an old photo of her with her mom, as it turns out, thats Tyrell's niece's photo instead of hers ... memory implants is not enough to convince them they are humans, you still have to plant things like old photos around them to entrench their belief in their human identity...

All great, though I would add Salute of the Jugger/Blood of Heroes to the list. Overlooked film. Osterman Weekend too for some late career Sam Peckinpah.

Don't forget Blind Fury. Best blind man with a sword film. And Randall "Tex" Cobb is in it.

Interesting fact: Zhora's death scene was originally filmed using an obvious stunt person and the actress came back for the DVD/Blu-Ray release and reshot the scene.

@@louispacetime1576 Yeah, it's true. In the theatrical release it looks terrible and you can tell it isn't the actress, but in the re-release the actress came back and reshot her scenes of running through the glass so now you can tell it's her. Cool eh!

If you had watched the theatrical version you would have known that in the end Deckard and Rachel run away out of the city and start a new life together, because Rachel was an experiment and she doesn't have the 4 years lifespan like the other replicants. The theatrical cut had voice-overs of Deckard narrating what he is feeling and what he knows that we don't know, classic noir film style. Also, in the original version, the unicorn daydream sequence doesn't exist it was added for the director and final versions some decades after the movie premiere, so Deckard was not supposed to be a replicant, although Ridley Scott now wants us to believe that he is one because of the unicorn memory, which is absurd and nonsensical... But anyway, it's a great movie and the sequel is amazing too. I'm really looking forward to seeing your reaction to it.

Hi guys. Just found your channel and subscribed. Love your reactions/reviews and how you analyse the themes of the movie. I wanted to add a couple of things that I’ve always found in this movie. The replicants are us. Wanting to live longer and desperately doing anything to get a few more years. The second thing is a little more depressing and that is in the final scene when Roy Batty gives the Tears In The Rain speech and he says “All those moments will be lost in time…..like tears in the rain.” That to me highlights how when we die, all of our experiences, all of our knowledge and perspectives will be lost, never to be repeated and that we must cherish every moment and pass as much knowledge onto the next generation as we can. Keep up the good work guys.

Rutger Haur's (sp?) speech at the end is so beautiful and sad to me. Amazing movie. The replicants show more empathy than many of the humans which is a brilliant commentary. The sequel does live up to the original in writing, concept and cinematography.

It still amazes me that Rutger wrote that speech the night before the shoot. He wasn't happy with the lines that were written so proposed the new ones to Ridley who said sure.

I was 14 years old on June 26th 1982 when I got dropped off at the movies and snuck into blade runner. As I entered the theater if you had asked me what I thought the future would look like I would have described something along the lines of Star Trek TOS, colorful and perfectly clean. When the movie ended I felt like a different person and my view of the future was complely changed to what was a much more realistic view. I also thought it was beautiful, Roys sacrifice and speach was so moving. I was very disappointed that it did not do well. I love the movie and everyone involved with it. Then we snuck in and watched The Thing (1982) for the first time, it was the best movie day ever.
