Hahaaaa! Love it!! The sketchy af Casio style beat made me think this was a Ric home demo. Then Benjamin starts singing!!!! Brilliant . Thanks for posting Tracey xx 💋

I think that's Greg's Casio VL-1 doing the drum pattern.

First, this rhythm and tempo are excruciating but how cool to hear Ben working with it to find ways to add depth and make it his own, especially at 3:07-3:10. I never fully appreciated Drive (or Heartbeat City as a whole) when it came out because I missed the band's original fire and energy, but I do love hearing all of Ben's different versions of it now!

I agree. The first time I heard this version, I thought, "No, no, no" except for those three seconds. Now I'm getting used to it and appreciate more the uniqueness of it. And those three seconds? Now, for some reason, they bring tears to my eyes--Benjamin's voice is so beautiful, and we'll never hear him or the likes of him ever again. : `(

A good song is a good song no matter the chessy sounding keyboard, in fact it adds a charm of its own and of course Benjamin Orr's voice is amazing as well , it's probably the reason it became a huge hit for the cars.

The long high pitched sound was truly annoying. I'm so glad they tweaked it and the end product on Heartbeat City was and always will be their masterpiece. Benjamin had a great voice. He should have sang more Cars songs.

Definitely a Casio Latin-type beat. Ric did demos in hotel rooms with Casio.

Not crazy about the beat, but Benjamin's voice, as always, superb.

love Ben's voice as always, the back ground beat totally does not go with this slow tender song. no idea what Ric was thinking. I think Ben should have asked Ric if he smoked a little to much before this idea!

I seem to recall reading something with I think Ric saying that when Ben sang it, he took the song someplace he didn't expect, so I think this is probably what he meant. :)

Ric always demos with drum machines. In fact, by Heartbeat City David never played live drums. Heartbeat City has no live drums. Door to Door is all a Linn Drum. Move Like this is not live. I've done a fair amount of recording and it is easier to use a machine. That said, I miss him recording with live drums.

I always wished they would go back to Roy Thomas Baker. He's a live drums guy.
