Gen Ling and I played The Mines golf course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr, AKA Bobby Jones, the man who created Augusta. It's my favorite course in Malaysia bar none. I absolutely love this course and can't wait to get back.
What happens if Lady Tour Pro gets 280 yard drive but all over the show, and I get a 230 yard drive in the fairway? It showed me a few things indeed. Waddaday waddaplaya. WaddaGen

Besides Gen being more accurate the biggest thing I noticed was she's a monster putter. I rarely ever see her 3 putt, and she drains everything inside of 5 feet, and commonly makes stuff in the 8-10ft range. I've noticed once you get to a certain level of golf, the difference being really shooting your best scores is hitting 1 or 2 mid or even longer range putts in a round.

You're absolutely right, golf is first and foremost a percentage game, where eliminating mistakes will get you a long way. What's scary is when Rory pearls one out to 340, he's also playing a percentage shot, not a maximum power shot.
@GolfSidekick
@GolfSidekick 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. 340 will be 95% for him though. It’s just he has practiced it a lot. There’s a myth that pros hit at 80% power but you can see when they are playing, there’s no way it’s 80%. But they are so well rehearsed that even a 110% shot is safe for them
@oliverdesouza5741
@oliverdesouza5741 3 жыл бұрын
@@GolfSidekick Yeah, 310 would be an 80% shot for Rors. I've never seen a pro go beyond 95%. Mostly I would say they hit 85% and with the driver they are looking for accuracy, typically choosing which side of the fairway to hit for the best next shot. I would estimate their driver dispersion as +/- 10yd distance and +/- 15yd sideways, about 1/3 the spread of an amateur. If you watch Pros on the range, they can hit the driver with the same sort of control that amateurs hit 8 irons.

Hi Matt I’ve been following your recent swing lessons and these golf vlogs with Gen and Michelle which are all excellent so many thanks. I noticed in this video and in some others, there is a wayward golf shot or two which does happen to all of us but is there enough intent in your target on each swing and is this one thing that causes your miss. Michelle’s lessons on the leaf on the tree and Gen’s set up on each shot teach a consistent pre shot routine to focus your mind. Something in there perhaps? Only you know your own thoughts and intentions when you set up for the shot; perhaps talk through your aim target each time?

Hey matt, looking at both of you play. I find the biggest difference is the end of every swing. Pros seems to keep their spine tilted compared to almost all club playas (we all go back to standing upright/ standing position) . Other than looking more stylish, I wonder if that's one of the keys to consistency.

Great video as always! I always try to implement the way of the playa on the course. I hit 5 iron off the tee cos I can’t hit my driver for toffee, I feel like distance does impact my score though. Do you think I should invest in a 2 iron/hybrid or try and get better with driver?

When I first started playing and really for years after I couldn't hit a decent driver. But I killed a 5 wood. Today I love my driver but I hit 3 irons off the tee almost as often as driver. You don't have to be especially good or especially long to break 80, but you do have to play smart. But while a 5 wood might help, it will cost about the same as 6 half hour lessons and I'd bet money that would help you more than any new club would. I wasted 20 years before taking a lesson and never broke 80. Within a year after my first lesson, I'd broken par. Good instruction is worth it's weight in gold.

"So many people equate distance to ability." Ain't that the truth, Matt?!?! I am consistently a 250 driver. I play regularly with guys who are 20-50 yards longer than me, but if I showed you one of our scorecards, you wouldn't know who were the long hitters. I also know that as soon as we're all around the greens that the game is equalized among us. Those driving range experts don't chip and putt enough. ...and DeChambeau is about 10 minutes from permanent analysis paralysis.

So you talked about distance here.. so my 8 iron full swing can go 160.. but over the course of a few months and a lesson from a pga teaching pro.. I finally understood they are scoring irons for a reason.. for control.. not distance.. try this.. instead of full swings.. of you combine your lessons with your teacher . And instead of going a full swing on your irons.. only do a backswing where your arms at parallel to the ground or a smidgen above.. u in know like 9 o'clock.. make that your full swing... You will more than likely have to go one more club down so instead of a 9 it will have to be an 8.. etc.. but the accuracy you will get will be way worth it... Now my 8 goes 140-145.. and even on an off strike it is still relatively straight and practically the same distance.... So if that means a 52 instead of 56.. so be it.. your overall swing motion will be more controlled and the lessons you have taken will be easier to implement on a 9 o'clock swing then a full swing.. I love your videos.. they have helped my game.. tremendously.. and if I'm able to return the favor.. that would be awesome.. I love you man and what you do for your community.. thanks for changing my life and making me smile even when im having a bad day with your videos.. you have impacted my life more than you will ever know

By all means. Play a shorter tee once in awhile. It's fun. Early this year I moved into a condo community with two golf courses. Both built for seniors. The 18 hole course which I play the most is a bit strange. It's a mix of easy par 4's and some tough as nails par 3's. It's only 4100 yards, but it plays tougher than it sounds with rough deep enough to lose your ball even though you saw where it landed and plenty of places that are just unrecoverable if you find them. I was shooting 5 or 6 over the first few months here before I found all the gotchas on the course. Now, on a good day, I've shot as low as 3 under and senior course or no, I don't care, that feels great. Along the way, I've hit two hole in ones. One of which was a double eagle on the card. A 234 yard par 4. Now that may be a long par 3 on any PGA course, but again, I don't care. The card shows a double eagle and that's good enough for me. 😎✌ As for "real" courses, we have one here that used to be where they played the JC Penney classic a few decades ago. I saw Arnold Palmer play there as a kid. On that course I've played from every tee box over the years. I struggle mightily playing from the pro tees on more holes than not. I break 80 sometimes from the white. I'm almost always under 80 from the senior tee box. And yes, I've played the women's tee too and was in the mid 70's both times playing with just my irons. I've played with hundreds if not thousands of people over the years this being a vacation spot and far too many think they just have to play from the back tee's to prove something. I think what it proves is some not so hidden masochism. 😂

Btw, Bob Jones University is not connected to either Robt. Trent Jones or Robt. Tyre Jones. Hope that helps.

Btw... A troller and a trawler are NOT the same. I spent some of my USN days trolling Russian trawlers. Hope that helps.
