Episode 1 of 9, Carbon Fiber Construction
/INSIDE Koenigsegg looks behind the scenes at Koenigsegg Automotive, and explores how innovation at the highest echelon of sports car manufacturers will affect the broader automotive world. Company founder and principal, Christian Von Koenigsegg, hosts this series, which was produced at Koenigsegg headquarters in Angelholm, Sweden.
In the first episode, Christian Von Koenigsegg reveals the secrets behind building automotive components from carbon fiber, the strong, lightweight material that's crucial to modern high-performance cars.

+95TurboSol you really are paying for the technologies. Its why I would prefer that cheap fiber glass shell some regular old parts maybe a tuned out engine from local shop done in of those private garage by car replica's sculpture specialist who can perhaps to close match of replica. Oh did I say for only like maybe 1% of the real cost.
@lejink
@lejink 8 жыл бұрын
You aren't just paying for the cost of the parts to make the car plus labor to assemble it, plus profit It takes years of development to design the car, it takes government testing to make it legal Imagine how much money it takes to have a team of engineers working for a couple years and flying them around the world for testing. Koenigsegg needs to get that money back.. And if they only make a few cars a year that means each car has to recoup a larger % of the expense of development

This has been my favorite car company for years. This car, is not only brilliant, the engineering, manufacturing process, the passion, is just absolutely amazing. Ferrari and Lambo, along with Pagani (which isn't really in the same class) are brilliant designers, fabricators and engineering companies, but Koenigsegg is just not only a remarkable company, but their cars are absolutely wonderful.. wonderful doesn't describe them.. more like Amazing, or Astounding. As an engineer, business owner and carbon fiber parts manufacturer, I can not only appreciate the amount of work that goes into one of these cars, this video just simply leaves my jaw dropped at the attention to detail and incredible engineering work that went into this car. Koenigsegg is my favorite car.. hopefully one of these days before I'm either dead, or too old to enjoy it, I can buy one. I work my ass off, keeping myself, my family and my employees fed and in homes, that's my primary concern. My goal, is to one day, ride in my own Koenigsegg. My absolute dream car. I started another company, working on patents and designs, and my goal is to make the company thrive and take the profits from it and hopefully buy one of these some day soon. Until then, I can simply just dream.

Poppa Bear What I do not understand - how they make any money on these cars - I mean their production is VERY limited, production cost must be high as well - hell a company like VW is losing a lot of money on making their Bugatti Veyrons... (but the can pay it from profits of selling thousands of Golfs)
@poppabear9279
@poppabear9279 9 жыл бұрын
Lukas N. Yeah Lukas, I was thinking the same exact thing. I do carbon fiber manufacturing in small scale, and know how much time, cost and energy goes into the carbon fiber molding. The Bugati Veyron is highly expensive and I heard that VW was losing millions making each car. This company is either pinching pennies where they can, making their own molds, or has their costs down where they can. I built an original 1969 Z28 camaro, and even with the available parts, paying a shop to do some of the work, replacing everything with factory original steel and much cheaper parts, it still cost me about 20x what the car originally cost. Doing this in the modern era, with high labor costs, high material costs and out of carbon fiber... the owner of this company must have his act together, or, he's being funded outside as well. I'd still love to have this car more than just about anything else on the planet.. except maybe the new, 1-off, 200 million dollar lunar landing rover.:P It wouldn't be fast, but damn would it get looks. lol.

This is by far the best video on carbon fiber and vacuum bagging that I found on youtube. This is what we need, proper practical applications. Not, how it was first developed by Edison and is now made by heating PolyAcrylonitrile(Yeah, I know those are important too, don't come at me with that). But, this is the best explanation of carbon fiber by showing how it's done.

As I understand for hollow parts (close contour or pipe like) you put a bag inside and pressurise it. (pump air in ) (vacuum cannot be used here) correct? For flat or open contour parts you use vacuum bagging to make parts. So, you remove the air from the bag applying atmospheric pressure to form the part. The question is How much air pressure (psi) do you use for hollow part making and what king of bag material do you use for bag? does it need to be made of rubber like bicycle tube?

Bad 0-60 times, bad tracktimes, low durability due to its small v8 and its absolutely not made for daily use. The only thing this car is good at is driving fast in straight line. But even 80 Year old Mercedes Silberpfeil cars could break the 400 kph border. But But buying JDM-cars covered with a carbonfibered-body and an fancy logo on the seats is just stupid. And there are supercars for daily usage. LaFerrari, Aventador, Veyron and p918 are comfortable, luxirouse and easy to handle. Guys who can afford one of this cars dont need space for lugage or 7 seats

no, if you listen closely, he says they use what's called "prepreg" carbon, short for preimpregnated. The carbon fiber fabric comes pre impregnated with the epoxy resin in the fabric. This makes the heat part of the process much more important (you could see them loading the parts into an autoclave in the video) because at room temperature, the resin is almost like a gel, needing heat to both "melt" it as well as cure it. This is not the only way to do it, but on a production scale, the best

Incredible learning experience. I thought I understood what they can do with the material, having had CF wheels on a road bike, etc. It is absolutely amazing that they can make some of the internal engine parts with CF. One would think that the heat or pressure would destroy the material, but it seems as through this 'black art' can overcome all of those issues. Bravo to the company and engineers that do this stuff. Keep pushing the limits!

I’m wondering why they manufacture the tube in to parts, especially as it’s designed to be pressurised. I don’t know how much pressure occurs in that tube, but the area where the two halves connect is the weak link, as only the resin is bearing the (tangential) load. Winding the tube would lead to better usage of the material which would again lead to a thinner wall, less material and less weight. Or am I missing something.?

Having made carbon fiber parts during an internship with a formula 1 team, this video is made even more interesting. In some ways, Koenigsegg are doing higher tech work(making tubs and valve covers), than the F1 team were doing. You can't really appreciate the amount of labor involved until you are actually doing it.

I was there a year ago. The ghost is the emblem from a fightersquadron that used to operate from the old swedish airforcebase where they have their factory (F10 Ängelholm). The squadron motto was "mad ger styrka" - "food gives strength". I was there writing a story about a Volkswagen bus. They were testdriving a new car on the airstrip while we were shooting the bus Very special place this base I think it is a nice homage to the squad. They saw A LOT of russian duralaluminium over baltic sea :)

Carbon fiber is about 14$ a square foot depending on material. The costs of a hand made car like this is worth it. You cant stamp this out..you can see the quality...I'm impressed. I wished I lived that way and jobs like that were here. Canada doesn't have much for this and this is what I do. And I do it at this level .

Can someone explain why they use carbon fiber for the Turbo piping but not the actual Turbo? If I'm correct, the gasses and pressure in the pipes are much hotter and higher than in the turbo itself. Unless the Turbine needs a more sturdy material for the housing, I think carbon fiber turbos should be a reality! (I'm not a turbo expert so don't hate if I sound stupid)

SO where should I use the other 125 mph capacity. Is this in any way applicable to selling sheets to make a 30# scooter that will replace a Ducati Racer. using my phone batteries.

Thanks that was very informative. I have one question as a industrial design grad who is into transportation design department. Knowing how to use 3ds Max and Alias and solidworks too, if I model a car in Alias since it's Nurbs and quality surfacing for concept work development and simulation, I've been told that the project will then be moved into catia or any software engineers use to add thickness on the body parts I made in Alias to be ready for production like producing steel tooling for pressing.. so my question is, do I have to know Catia and other engineering advanced softwares? Or should I just stick to A class surfacing in Alias then they will handle the rest of the job?

You have a beauty layer on the outside, that one half will overlap the other half inside, then subsequent layers inside overlap the joints to make uniform layers/strength. They are not just one layer each half.

Consider that 1 BAR is 14.5 psi, so with a vacuum bagged flat part that's what you get... if you want a closed contour part with comparable properties that's the minimum pressure. Having said that usually one takes advantage of the bag for much higher pressures, even 100psi or more. Bladders can be nylon bags, shaped latex or silicone, all sorts are used.
