De Tomaso is most known for designing the stunner that was the Pantera, but that wasn't the only winner.

@@nandocario3848 si, de hecho siempre es importante señalar que solo las marcas son italianas, los fundadores son ambos ítalo-argentinos, un poco como Bugatti, la marca es francesa, el fundador era un italiano naturalizado francés

Great Video explaining the history of Detomaso. I also feel Alejandro Detomaso was an exceptional person. I owned a 73 L Pantera early version with a 72 dash. Loved every minute of driving that car. Funny thing is since this video was showing the sedan four door and it mentioned that it was meant to compete with Jaguar. I happen to purchase a 91 jaguar sedan which totally reminds me of this Detomaso Deauville. They sure look very similar design wise.

Yes it's like a lot of super cars of it's day but it looks special and sophisticated like some one designed it with passion in their heart. It's a little bit different and that's what I look for. I would have one please.

Great video, thoroughly enjoyed it, where is the "toy shop" ? The sad thing is that I always thought from being a young child that when I was in my fifties I would be able to buy myself a Pantera but unfortunately my wages didn't increase the same as the Pantera , I would like to have a look around though, I love how you have the group 4 arches blended in , my lad likes to see the rivets , the Pantera is his favourite car too for some reason, might be to do with his dad ? I take my hat off to you , good luck 👍

I had a 1974 Pantera back in 76' it was a great entry into the super car market. Lincoln was already finished importing the Pantera after 74'. Some parts were tough to get until later. I liked the car but was happy to move on to Ferrari.

Thank you for the vid. For me, Pantera is still the best looking super sport car along with the Miura. And the elegance of Mangusta can not be neglacted having its own character peculiar to it. Considering the exaggerated lines of today's super cars, so called exotic cars (I call robotic cars), those oldies are the kind of cars that I can not show a point and say "if they did it that way...". So simple lines, yet, so beautiful. Modern ones ? Take a Koenigsegg, an Avendator, a Murcialego, Huracan and a dozen of other shit to park side by side...you may be sure that they will be building the Voltran.

I agree with you completely! The pre L cars without the flares and the Countach wing are so svelte and sensuous that when I went shopping for one 18 years ago, that's what I wanted. I've had my '72 pre L for 18 years, restored and modified for 4 years to make it more powerful (500+hp, fuel injection, leather interior with Corvette C4 seats, 335s rear wheels, etc.) and more drivable. I've now had it back for about a year and a half and drive it most weekends. The sweet noise from that engine is a wonderful lullaby.

Ironic for an Italian car, it was actually designed by an American born-Tom Tjaarda. Tom Tjaarda was my friend and we spent time together on his trips the United States and to Detroit Auto Show. He was my house guest as I talked him out of staying at the Red roof Inn. He shared these stories as we had coffee together on many mornings. Tom grew up in Birmingham, Michigan. His father John Tjaarda of Dutch ancestry, was the designer of the 1939 Lincoln Zephyr. The Zephyr design, was actually then stollen by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, after John Tjaarda mistakenly allowed Dr Porsche into his design studio to take a peek. Porsche later shortened the wheelbase and designed the VW bug from his viewing of the Zephyr. Tom went to school at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and graduated in architecture. His girlfriend said to Tom sarcastically, that he would end up designing cars like his father. Prophetic as it was, Tom later moved to Italy reccomended to his job at Ghia by his professor Prof. Aarre Lahti. He moved to Italy, got married and went to work for Ghia studios, Bertone and Pinninfarina . The mid-engine design of the Pantera rear deck lid was to draw visual attention to the beefy 351 Cleveland engine. Besides the Pantera, Tom also designed the Fiat 124 Spyder, Ferrari 365 California, Aston Martin Lagonda and Chevrolet Rondine, a Corvette prototype. In later years, Tom formed Tjaarda Design Studios and worked on many other automotive design projects including with Spyker Automotive. For additional comments or interview contact: Jim Cozzi-Temecula, CA (951)445-5920 or email me at cozzijim@gmail.com.

Alejandro DeTomaso was Argentinian, not Italian. His main manufacturing company was in Italy though. He was not an executive at De Tomaso, he was The Owner and Founder of his own company: De Tomaso ( founded in 1959 ). You will notice that on the original DeTomasos, the trademark emblem are the colors of the Argentinian flag: Light blue and white. The logo also appeared in the wheel caps and steering wheel. Italians like to brag its an Italian car, and americans call it the american supercar, but the beast is Argentine... Shelby worked with him (Alejandro), but two big egos are too big egos, and their relationship soured quickly, each going their own way...Sorry. Alejandro was very proud of mentioning that this was an Argentine car, it came into fruition long after Shelby had been gone, which was even way before the De Tomaso Mangusta came into existance.... DeTomaso took over Maserati (bought the holding) too, in the early 1970s when Maserati was bankrupt and made it a profitable, sustainable company until he sold the holding. Did the same with Ghia. He was always in charge of his own founding company (De Tomaso), throughout its entire existence up until 1993 when his son took over. I do know they also had an affair with Daihatsu too, when his son took over, although not sure to what extent though. His cars are perhaps even more sought out today than when they came out, great design but had some bugs, pretty much like any supercar of that era, although perhaps less bugs than the average super car of that era. The Detomaso Pantera, is an Alejandro Detomaso brain child.

Apparently one of the reasons they got such an awful record for warranty claims in the US was that they would arrive on the dock from Italy and the longshoremen would drag race them up and down before loading them onto the trucks for the dealers. Not ideal running in! Nowadays there's no reason a properly cared for Pantera should not be completely reliable.
