Not everyone wants an SUV or crossover. For some, a well-crafted sedan is just the thing to pamper a person after a long day at work. The Toyota Avalon fills that bill. The all-new fifth generation is available with two powertrains. Tom Voelk takes the V6 Touring model out for a test drive and finds it keeps the unpleasantries out while offering up some decent driving dynamics. Yes, an Avalon.

About Tom:
Tom Voelk is an award-winning automotive contributor to The New York Times. His podcast was the first to win an Emmy Award. He also married way out of his league. Now, stop reading this promotional copy bragging about Tom's photography and editing skills and watch a couple episodes. It's much more interesting.

Say what you want about the grill, I also said it looked big, but after seeing a couple already on the road, I must say, it looks a lot better in person. Ofc I would never own one, might as well get a LS or LX. Good job tho toyota.

My favorite design element is the kink in the C-pillar. Other than the baleen whale inspired front grill, this particular Avalon has a very sporty and aggressive look.

At first when you said genx, I forgot that I’m a genxr.:) it’s a nice car, though didn’t like the looks in white during your review. I went down to my local Toyota dealership and liked the Touring version in red metallic and bought one. It’s a great car inside and out. It’s essentially a 2019 Lexus ES350 for less money and actually net more for the money including a more simple and intuitive infotainment system, along with rear heated rear seats not included in the Lexus. The 2019 Avalon looks better in black or red in the Touring. The large grill has already grown on me. The white emphasizes the massive grill making it stick out like a sore thumb.
@dlg5485
@dlg5485 6 жыл бұрын
I always thought the Avalon shared a platform with the LS 500, but the ES makes sense. The LS 500 is the group's flagship and should have its own platform. Either way, given its excellent build quality and pretty decent looks (except for that absurd grill), the Avalon if probably the best option in the mainstream large-ish sedan segment.

I Finn Just because the grille is huge doesn't necessarily make it an "awful design". It depends based on the execution. To a degree, I would admit that the grille is a bit much, but it does look very cohesive in my opinion, while looking aggressive in a fashionable way. It does work nicely with the overall design in my opinion, while looking pretty sleek to me. Hell, with that aside, I know the Camry XSE's grille will not work well on this..

Needs 20s and air suspension for some hard parking...no seriously...if it were available in a wagon, would it have a larger market and take on the volvo s90/v90. I think the the larger rear of the wagon would balance out the front. Does this cross shop w/the g70/80/90 or the RLX too or not because those are lux brands similar to Lexus?

I have an ‘05 MDX with 225K that is still running strong. I’m looking to replace the MDX with possibly the Avalon. Wondering if anyone has ditched their SUV for the Avalon? I don’t have kids but need to carry passengers on occasion. It’s my understanding the rear seats in the Avalon fold down in case I need to carry larger packages.

I was surprised too. My 2009 Avalon Limited has a class II hitch and 1,500 lbs. rating. Unfortunately the soft suspension doesn't handle more than 100 lbs of tongue weight very well. The V-6 motor can certainly pull smaller trailers with ease.

Lol 3.5 V6 engine for a family car, only in USA !!! Here in EU that toyota would probably have 2.0 D4D engine !!!!!!!! 1.0, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, or 2.0 liter engines are majority engines in cars and more then half of them are with diesel engine.
