Polestar has introduced a number of significant design, engineering and specification updates to its 2024 model year Polestar 2. Launched in 2021, the Swedish brand’s first all-electric model gains larger batteries, faster charging capability and increased range.
The new model is available in standard and long-range forms with buyers benefitting from bigger batteries for both models. Standard range cars receive a 69kWh pack (up from 64kWh) supplied by LG Chem while long range models will come with a new 82kWh CATL pack (up from 78kWh). The updated batteries also feature improved cell chemistry and revised connection hardware which allow for faster rapid charging. According to Polestar, the standard range models will be able to charge at speeds of up to 135kW while long range models see the maximum charge rate rise to 205kW.
Another significant update is a switch from front to rear-wheel drive for 2WD models. In a move that mirrors that made by parent company Volvo with its XC40 and C40 Recharge models, the 2WD Polestar 2 will have its drive motor on the rear axle instead of the front. Polestar has also revised the control electronics for all-wheel drive models - in particular the front motor disconnect function. As a result of the updates, standard range Polestar 2 models have a WLTP figure of 321 miles (an increase of 25 miles) while long range dual motor models have a WLTP figure of 367 miles (an increase of 65 miles).
Polestar has also improved performance with the introduction of new motors. Single-motor models are powered by a new motor with power output of 295bhp. Torque output has also been increased from 330Nm to 490Nm. As a result, the 0-62mph time has been cut by 1.2 seconds, down to 6.2 seconds.
UK customers can order the 2024 model year Polestar 2 now, with the first deliveries expected in the third quarter of 2023. Prices start from £44,490 for the standard range single motor model and rise to £57,950 for the range-topping long range dual motor model with Performance Pack.
Join Nicola as she takes the revised Polestar 2 for a drive in the UK for the first time. What do you think of the improvements? Would you choose a Polestar 2 over a Tesla Model 3? Let us know in the comments below.

I hired one recently, fabulous piece of engineering ,particularly the 'anti creep' feature. That's just so sensible in traffic. However I'm over 6ft tall & I found the cabin a tad claustrophobic. with that low roof & all black headlining, i'm not sure I could have it as a daily driver. It seemed unnecessary as its quite a wide car. It's a bit like BMW IX models, a big wide wheelbase & an unnecessarily narrow upper half

Definitely a big improvement on the outgoing model with the big range hike and far fewer add ons needed meaning you dont need to add £10k to geta few safety options / reversiing mirror etc.. When i test drove the current model i found the google voice command interface was very good. One the downside, I hated the huge, overly high and completely unnecessary centre console and the transmission tunnel holdover in the back is utterly ridiculous.

@@Jramskovk true. that’s not ideal for people who use them. luckily you can remove the second one which is what I did. i now have a decent additional storage compartment. which is what it should have been in the first place. it’s the first time i see a car where you need to lift the arm rest. to access a cup holder. i would have removed the other one if i could. i never used them in any car. i never drink coffee or soda while i drive. if anything i rather store a water bottle in the door pocket when i do long trips as cup holders are usually way too small for that. and in this car, unlike many cars of this size where you can fit a full 1,5L bottle. here you need to get away with a 50cl (or eventually a 1L can also fit). or use the cup holder to but a canteen. not ideal indeed. but i forgive the car as it not a deal breaker for me and it has plenty of other qualities. oh yes maybe the cup holders suck but you have the curry hook in the gloves compartment which is amazing otherwise there are some 3 printed cup holders solutions which you can hang right there

Two little points, you should have a button to open the boot from the driver seat (and close too) and you can kick under the rear to open too, that is why the button is not an exclusive way to work. After you mentioned the transmission tunnel, and the console space, you actually had and have batteries on those spaces, that is also why it’s kept and you don’t have that space. Then the dynamics of having that center weight really makes a difference on handling, the EV that keep all the batteries as a platform tend to wobble on turn and suspension range.
@shia_labeouf
@shia_labeouf Жыл бұрын
The batteries in the transmission tunnel are a good use of the space, but not a reason for it to be there. It's there because the chassis is an ICE chassis. No one would design a pure EV and put a transmission tunnel shape in, as evidenced by the fact that no dedicated EV platforms have it. Also the kick boot opening is a feature of the Plus pack, so it's not on every model, though the one tested here IS a plus pack model as it has the panoramic roof.

It's closing the gap, but given the choice again today that I had 18 months ago, I'd still go Model 3. It still trumps it on performance, real-world efficiency, practicality (if only it had a hatchback) whereas the PS2, whilst feeling just as big on the outside, is like some reverse-tardis where it's somehow much more cramped inside. I have to make that choice again in 2 years, it'll be interesting to see if Polestar have something less "compromised" on the market by then.
@mho0
@mho0 Жыл бұрын
I selected Polestar over Tesla. Tesla has better performance from stand still, but they are same when moving. Tesla is clearly more efficient (but that was not point for me as I do not do road tripping). I like and liked more P2 infotainment. For me hatchback was significantly more practical and M3 more like you could live with it, but not good at all. Driving dynamics especially on winter is way better in P2. Also I like cockpit design. Also Tesla quality is still (while improving) so bad. Paint is super thin (but at least you have it in all the places). Phantom braking is annoying as hell. Frameless windows (pretty much in any car) bad during winter time. Autopilot when doing lane changes pretty stupid/bad. Look is much better in P2 (but naturally here just my opinion). But naturally there are good things in M3 also like mentioned performance, infotainment is very responsive, go-kart driving feeling (at least in perf version) is very nice, efficiency is great and fancy control possibilities in track mode.

The charging speed sounds great. Yesterday I was taking a trip, needed to charge. The top speed reached 110kw and tapered at 70kw. I went to needed bathroom, had a hot dog from gas station and 15m later I had more range than I needed. At no point I was waiting for car, I was doing regular stuff I would have done anyway. The only ones who maybe need greater charge speed are the ones who somehow want to do 1000km in one go. But that's a minority breed of drivers.

I'm currently in the middle of a 5000+ km road trip in my EV6, a couple days knocking on 1000km, so it does happen and is possible. It is nice to see the EV6 charge at 240kW, then settle to 150-200kW. There are other "EV from the ground up " cars. Jaguar iPace, VW ID3, ID4, Buzz, Nissan Leaf, BMW i4 and i7 etc. Why do we "need to understand" what Tesla may or may not have done? I personally don't give a jot. I looked at a Tesla Model 3 pre-pandemic, and walked away, because of the horrendously awful quality. Orange peel paintwork, creaky interior trim, no hatchback. And poor comments on Tesla forums - from Tesla owners - regarding crap after sales service etc. Perhaps *you* ought to understand that every day doesn't necessarily begin and end with Tesla.....Here in the UK at least, Tesla will not retain it's charge network advantage, once the likes of Gridserve complete their planned charging hub installations, all of which will have 350kw Ultra Rapid chargers.

The new Volvo EX30, for instance, is a case study in what pertains intelligent, functional and beautiful interior design.

with a really serious car test, you make a long journey with the car and test that the navigator works correctly and provides correct information and e.g. that you can arrive at a commercial charger. and the car has the amount of battery left when you get to the charger that the car said you should have left. and the car actually shows chargers that exist

I test drove the twin motor version at the weekend as it was on my shortlist of potential buys, the performance was outstanding however i found the boot size pretty disappointing and being 6ft 2 there was no way anyone but a child could sit behind me, the transmission tunnel was annoying as it was putting pressure on my left knee too the interior is pretty sparce for a 58k car (in the spec i drove). The biggest shock was how much value they lose in the first year, i was looking at the approved used on the Polestar website and they had the yr24 model 10 month old in same spec as what i drove with 4k miles and it was £32k, a 26k drop!!! Ouch

02:33 - So with the SR 69 kWh battery: 321 mi range. Tesla with a 60 kWh battery: 305 mi. So in order for the Tesla to meet its match, the Polestar should have had 345 mi out of that battery. On the AWD LR model, the Tesla with it's 75 kWh battery scores 374 mi which is 7 miles MORE than the 82 kWh battery on the Polestar. Furthermore, on highways, the Polestar is just a crappy barn on batteries. It gets now 60% less range compared to a Tesla, and the figures doesn't help it either. The price is definitely not helping it. With a start price of 49,000 $ for the SR 69 kWh, Tesla beats the sheite out of this car :) So yeah... Sheite in every way, but hey, Tesla finally met its match. Hahah, paid journalists :) And this comes out of a person which is not a Tesla fanboy :) Please make auto journalism great again, not shitty. Thank you!

Test drove one of these beauties here at Polestars service centers in Cologne. It’s a nice car, but compared to my current Model 3 it feels very cramped inside. That huge transmission tunnel is big turnoff when you’re carrying three people in the back, which I often do. And that vertical tablet…why is it oriented like that and why does it look like a Samsung Galaxy tablet from 2012? But yes, the ride is pretty smooth but overall this car feels outdated…getting the new Model 3 instead.

It's rear wheel drive because it simplifies the mechanics (no steering on the rear wheels, of course). Therefore enables cheaper production & lower prices. I'm surprised more brands didn't take this approach from the outset. Oh & it's sporty :)

I think the reason is that a lot of EVs are still based on existing ICE car platforms - and most of those are frontcwheel drive. Polestar kind of is also - hence the transmission channel (and the front wheel drive on the first version).

Rear wheel drive cost more for production. Plus, FWD is safer for average drivers because less chance of spinning out when corner fast. It is better they can get to see what kill them when they understeer into a tree or ditch.

I remember when VOLVO’s had front and rear bumpers with dampers which could absorb the energy from a low impact bump. I think thats what most people want when they spend £60k on a car, a little bit of front/rear/side protection on their overly expensive asset, in car parks, on the road parking etc.

Interesting, what is it about this that you prefer over the Tesla? I'm looking at the two and although I like how this looks and the fact it has a hatchback, I'm struggling to get past the fact that in the long range dual motor trim, if I want adaptive cruise control and the panoramic sunroof, the Polestar is £13k more but is slower, has less storage space, charges slower, has worse safety scores, is 20% less efficient (so more expensive to run), doesn't have access to the Tesla charging network and has a lot less features than the Tesla. Although also considering waiting for the rumoured refresh of the Model 3, which apparently is coming soon and will improve range, add ventilated seats, ambient lighting etc but then remove the stalks which seems stupid (touch capacitative buttons on the wheel would make roundabouts a nightmare). Anyway, curious to get your views

good video but im so tired of people saying move over "Insert tesla model here". its dumb to think any electric car is going to come close just saying the truth here. lol. also this thing is like double the price! This is where only a handful of companies thrive. The reason tesla sells a crap tons of model 3's isnt the way it looks or interior. ITS THE PRICE AND THE CHARGING NETWORK! why are people so dumb its so damn obvious. evetime a new electric car comes out, they fail to see this. lucid...Hey we should compete with tesla! but make a car that is double the cost of the base model s price. lol dumb as hell, and sorry to POLESTAR IS THE SAME! Polestar 1= $150k, Polestar 2= $50k, polestar 3=$83,500. Like who is buying this?! i maybe have seen 3 polestars on teh road my whole life in USA. i cant even take a breath without seeing a new tesla. you can get a new model 3 right now for 40k, model y for 52k, model s for around 60k base. and it comes with relaible charging network, updates that matter and if you have a home you can charge reliably there as well with Powerwall with the extra $$ i saved. what do i get for $50k polestar 2? beautiful interior car, outside is so damn ugly, yellow seatbelts, new amazing tech.

I bought a polestar 2. 3 weeks later it lost 5000€... I'd say it's the car of the 90s farmer. It's solid, but otherwise it's not that great. The pluses : - quiet up to 90 km/h - it has controls - the interface is practical and fluid - torquey engine - it's not a tesla Minuses - it's not super comfortable, and not super incisive - much less efficient than the tesla - little storage space - rear seats for children - no car parking (crazy eh) - opening the boot with your foot works one time out of 2 - the 3D camera is useless - the adaptive cruise control makes you puke - the polestar app is ultra slow Clearly, my next car won't be a Polestar.

Its likly RWD drops the centre or gravity and as a result spring rates can be reduced now not having to overcome being ponderous in corners, in addition weight distribution can be optimised and leaving the front wheels to do only steering means camber and trail optimal and better steering feel. In short RWD will ride better, just a shame Volvo ICE floorpan leaves transmission tunnel so no under centre console storage or 5 persons seating. Heres me Tesla driving since 2014 never a fan of grills but I will say the old car looked better still seems a great EV and the more the better.
