The BMW M340i got an LCI for the '23 model year! It now has idrive 8, slightly revised fascias, and a new shifter. I took it for a drive in the California canyons to see what it was all about!

Charlie wasn’t holding back! This car is such a sweet spot. It’s a shame all the pops and bangs are done through the speakers on the LCI models. Definitely needs a Remus exhaust

Speed- not noticeably different until above around 70-80mph, then the M3 has more power at the top end. Steering- M3 has more feedback and is more communicative, both are very precise, but the M340i is a bit hard to tell on center/feel understeer. Both are vague compared to the best of the best like McLaren or Porsche. Suspension- honestly not appreciably different. The M340i settles just as well as the M3 and feels like it has the same amount of grip. The M3 is more firm in day to day driving, but I honestly do not notice a difference on track. Brakes- the same in day to day driving, but the M340i’s brakes are more sensitive to heat on track. Both are brake by wire so there’s not much pedal feel in either. Verdict- I’d go with the M340i, it is 20-30k cheaper, looks way better, and comes very close to the M3 in terms of performance. Unless you are looking for a dedicated track car, it is not worth spending the extra money for the M3 (and if you are looking for a dedicated track car for 80-90k, I’d recommend a Cayman instead).

@@connorscanlon6289 The S58 in the M3 is literally the better version of the B58 in the m340 . To say it’s close in performance is just misinformation, S58 has stronger internals , better cooling , also is twin turbocharged instead the single turbo in the m340 . The looks are subjective ,personally I don’t think the g80 is ugly at all and it looks more aggressive than a m340 for sure .

iDrive 8 is a Mongolian clusterfuck. And the tacked-on giant screen compounds the problem. Such a shame - outstanding drivetrain, ruined by video game instrument cluster, tacked-on widescreen insanity.

@@manuelmartens you can turn it off in the drive settings, but I believe the IconicSound makes the actual exhaust louder in sport plus mode. But inside the cabin you’ll hear more pops and the “fart” shifting, but the it doesn’t sound like that outside.

From the inside through the speakers are overrun...I own one....IconicSound is on in the driving settings> drivetrain and chassis> iconicsoud...go look for it turn it off and see if you hear the "fart" shifting, pops and bangs..
