Driver 2 All Missions% Speedrun in

OCT. 30 2023 EDIT: Well after over a year and a half, it's been done and the insane BryNu managed to beat it! Well done to them!
Well there you go, nearly 8 months after my previous 1:18:39 I've finally managed to get a new best time for the category! It was a long time coming and for some decent stretch I didn't actually believe I could actually get enough consistency to reach 1:17:XX. But in the lasts weeks, I've gotten many runs that died really late in the game and that also had a lot of time in bank so I've gained a new urge to go for it and get it done for good. Now for the usual commentary on each part.
Chicago:
Pretty good! The main time lost is from not getting a quick pattern in Chase The Intruder, I got the same one as the previous run. Just that can save another 15 seconds almost. Apart for that, there's a couple seconds here and there from slight driving errors.
Havana:
Also quite good! Find the Clue being the main issue once more, just like my WR I lost a decent chunk of time, an optimal Find the Clue can be done at least 40 seconds quicker. Apart for that, mostly some driving mistake here and there and a reset in Stop the Truck for a better pattern.
Las Vegas:
Now that one is nearly perfect! There's some slight driving error but overall it was extremely quick, Steal the Keys was really fast. Main issue left in that one was Stake Out, and again it's mostly a luck deal. Still managed to save it with a really lucky finish!
Rio de Janeiro:
Finally the last city of the game and that one was also absurdly quick. Main blemish is the driving in Steal The Cop Car and 4 resets to get a good pattern in Chase the Gunman. Everything else is just as good as I'd like it to be. I was extremely nervous (as I say multiple times in the video) in the final 3 missions since the night before I lost another run right near the end of the final game (as you can see here: / nastyvivaciousbubblete... . So I was really hoping this wasn't a repeat of that and that I actually had a win at last.
And so, I've managed once more to lower the time for the game to levels I again honestly didn't think was possible. Can it go lower? Yes, there's still some room for improvement with the current strats, but safe to say the margin of error versus a perfect run is getting REALLY thin and also much more dependent on RNG. Granted it feels I've said a similar thing the previous time but this run has no fails, nearly all the strats were executed as intended and the driving was near perfect for most of it. So it becomes more and more difficult to pull it off. I could see myself getting a new PB, I don't see myself getting a 1:16:XX though, at least not anytime soon because saving another 42 secs means matching this really great run AND also perfecting Find the Clue AND finally getting perfect RNG in Chase the Gunman and Chicago. Again, it's possible, you just need to prepare for one hell of a grind.
So will I try it? Maybe! But I won't go for it right away that's for sure and for now I don't think I'm in the mood for that grind. But maybe eventually it'll be reached, either by me or even someone else, who knows! In the meantime, I'm either trying other categories or doing all the mods coming out for the game, both for this version and for OpenDriver2 that's progressing really well! Maybe even some Driver Syndicate wackiness! Stay tuned for more!
For those curious, this was run on ReDriver 2, a fan made PC port of the PS1 game that allows the game to run at a smooth framerate, better resolution, better draw distance and some features like the "skip cutscene" option etc. Basically the only way people should play this game nowadays, removing the lag allows you to experience the game as it was likely envisioned by the developers. And lastly, this was also streamed live at / the_surviv0r , if you ever wanted to see me play this live.

It's the funny thing about running this game, the hard chase missions we remember tend to be easier to run since they are constant, they play out nearly the same way everytime so you can learn a specific strat. Meanwhile the driving ones are more prone to random chaos.

Dude, we were talking on twitch the other day (bigdcbiggs), and I knew there was time to shave, But 1:17.42 is incredible. I'm bummed I missed it live, but well done dude. Its really gonna take one hell of a grind to beat 1:17.42 I highly doubt a sub 1:16.5 is possible. I really hope one day a redriver for driver1 ps1 happens. I looked at my tas for the first mission and for some reason I lost 4 seconds? I took the same route(although used a risky route at the end when I pulled into the grass) and still wasn't fast enough. Can you give me any hint as to what I did wrong?

Assuming you're referring to your PS1 TAS, I'll chalk it up to either difference between versions or just tiny optimisations that aren't directly obvious. EDIT: Actually I found your main time lost, you take a much slower path through the grass near the end point where you lose a lot of speed.

I am at chase the gunman. Nearly impossible like they put magnets on trees double traffic all time cant barely catch the car if i touch it it sends me outta space and so much lags it is uncontrollable it pisses me off especially the lags its crazy its slow af like 1 sec is 4 seconds

What emulator you are using to get such great graphics? I'm trying with retroarch and it looks so pixilated.

It's not an emulator, this is a fanmade port of the game that run natively on PC (well nearly, if I recall there's some tidbits of emulation left in the porting process). Hence the "REDRVIVER 2" in the title since that's what's this port is called. Hence we get to play it in any resolution of our choice and get the game to run at full speed.

I have a question. In my driver 2 there is no cutscenes can yountell me why? And if you are playing it with pc, where did you download it?

You likely missed the step where you pull out the cutscenes from the disc, by default none of the cutscenes are accessible. I'd say check back with Vortex's guide and see if there's a step you missed, or simply try it again to be safe. For the second one, you can simply get it from your actual PS1 Driver 2 disc. Any downloads online is something I can't legally help with.

33:27 Garage with 2 burning ammunition trucks in it? Nothing to see here :D 1:12:00 what are the restarts for? I think this is amazing, played Driver 1 a bit as a kid but never got the hang of it. Recently tried to install but cars were transparent, maybe I'll give this port a try one day.

Yeah I've played both PS1 Driver a good amount too, they have really satisfying physics! The restart are due to the quick kill, I need some specific parterns and on the 1:24 I kept getting the car will be too quick to get ahead properly on the first right corner thus taking too long to kill. Long enough that even resetting 4 times is worth it (a reset cost around 4.5 secs).

This is the hardest mission imo (without cheesing it), every time I play the game I always wanna stop playing when I reach this mission. EDIT: nevermind I think I understood your original comment, so the pattern is decided by the time remaining with the mission starts. You want a time below 1:24?

@@negroman275 Yeah each pattern has (thankfully) a different timer, so I can tell which pattern is which. For this mission, it's not specifically about the quickest timer, I just need a pattern where the gunman goes slow enough on the intersection that I cut ahead and take him out. The patterns I use are the 1:23, 1:58 and 2:08. Hope that makes more sense!

I reset to get a better pattern, you'll notice the timer one the attempt I did go is different. For Chase the Gunman I need a pattern where he's slow enough that I can cut ahead and win quickly. The pattern I found are the 1:23, 1:58 and 2:08. Since as far as we know we can't manipulate it I just have to retry until I have a pattern that's usable. But in general it's always a matter of "Is this pattern efficient for this mission" for the chases.

You simply turn normally, it's a visual addition made by ReDriver 2. If I recall it basically works like it did in Driver 1
