A devastating bus fire during a school field trip in Pathum Thani, Thailand, on Tuesday (1 Oct) claimed the lives of 20 students and three teachers, according to Thai media.
The bus was carrying students and teachers from Wat Khao Praya Sangkharam school in Uthai Thani to an exhibition in Nonthaburi when the accident occurred.
Sixteen students and three teachers were hospitalized, with three students in critical condition due to severe burns.
The driver, Samarn Chankut, initially fled but later surrendered to police. Initial investigations suggest a blown tire caused the bus to lose control, crash into a barrier, and catch fire.
Authorities are examining whether the bus’s safety features, including exits and fire extinguishers, were adequate.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra expressed condolences, pledging financial aid to the victims' families and stricter enforcement of transport safety regulations.
