The age old Chevy vs. Ford battle continues in the quest for the fastest lap time around ChuckWalla Valley Raceway. Who's going to take home the win in this epic V8 Battle. Will it be the Supercharged Fox Body mustang running 12lbs of boost, or will it be the LS Swapped BMW running aero goodies? Both cars are on Nitto Tire NT01's and both cars have a very similar curb weight 2550 lbs.

I was definitely ready to see a side by side/sync'd in-car battle like you see with some Motortrend and other comparison vids. Would like to see where the difference really was. That's a HUGE delta between what appeared to be two pretty stout cars but...that's a lot of power in the BMW. Could be drag racing the straights and putting in the turns, and still pull a fast time. Feel like this vid is missing the whole point of the vid...lol. Even if you do HotVersion Togue style front to rear, then switch positions...whoever pulls away wins...something.

@gchun21
@gchun21 5 жыл бұрын
I agree with sam that the power difference was the biggest factor. Solid axles, when setup correctly, only hinders when going over uneven surfaces. The mustang driver said that he had the maximum motorsports grip box which would eliminate the binding of the upper control arms. On a smooth track like this, that mustang should handle like a go cart. But a seemingly mild 308 on 12 lbs typically makes right around 400rwhp. That's 150 rwhp difference at about the same 2800 lb weight according to the desc. I have a fox that put down just under 400rwhp and a fox that put down 526rwhp. There is a huge difference between the two despite having similar suspension setups. Driver exp could also play a part. Mustang driver shaved 7 seconds off of his 1st lap. May be a clue that it's his first time at that track whereas the bmw driver is a returning competitor.

is anyone surprised that a fake impression of a sports car (with truck suspension in the rear) got owned by a bmw m? anyone?
@ridemotoeveryday
@ridemotoeveryday 6 жыл бұрын
I call it truck suspension also. I own a fox. I know many solid axle cars that will put it on alot of "sports cars". All about set up and skill. If you can drive a vehicle fast then its a "sports car" at that time.
@lahillsm3
@lahillsm3 6 жыл бұрын
I'll remind you that "truck" suspension is the same as "wagon" suspension... and it's been working great for that purpose for over a century. It's great at accepting heavy loads because it's all one sturdy piece and because it doesn't change camber or toe with load. It's also cheap to build and offers great articulation. Are you at all surprised that this design isn't also ideal for sports cars? I'm not, given the great number of suspension designs and the inherent trade offs that each offers. Truck suspension is great for trucks because it was designed for trucks, but it's not ideal for sports cars. When a sports car is mid-corner at around the limit of grip, it doesn't do it well to have nasty, sudden upsets in tire loading. So when one wheel hits a bump in the road, it doesn't help the car to have another wheel connected to that. Fucks with the loading and the camber of that wheel that didn't even hit anything. So that's one point. Secondly it's heavy as fuck. Your unsprung mass is massive because the whole fuckin hundred pound differential is part of it (granted it's in the middle). So that means when you hit a bump, you have a whole bunch of steel flying at the sprung mass, and it's the job of the sprung mass to stop it. And the heavier that unsprung mass is, the more force it will put on the sprung mass e.g. the chassis. So that upsets the chassis as well. Thirdly under body roll independent suspensions can be arranged so that they add a bit of negative camber to the loaded (outside) tires. This is something truck suspension can't do, so it's doomed to load the outer edge of the outside tire under cornering. It maintains camber and toe under squat though, and that's why we still see it in drag cars. All suspension designs offer advantages in some areas and disadvantages in others. The disadvantages of truck suspension outweigh the advantages in a sports car, and given its complete absence in modern sports cars, it appears that Porsche, BMW, Ferrari, etc agree with me. Of course, if you need to load 4000 lbs of gravel into your car before hitting the track, truck suspension might be perfect.
@ridemotoeveryday
@ridemotoeveryday 6 жыл бұрын
You explained nothing new. I would prefer irs and will be building a system for my fox with the late 15' up irs stuff. Yes solid axle mustangs over 79' are cheap production cars just to make money. I was just reffering to the " fake sportscar " phrase. I own a fox a solid axle, they built irs for 99 to 04 and it didnt help them on the track much due to bad geometry. Its all about setup and driver. If you can track your car and be competitive it is a sports car. I have a stock engine and trans with alot of suspension work and it will out corner alot of modern "sports cars". Just gotta have the right setup and skills and balls to push it. Any car can be fast, never underestimate someones passion or skills.
@lahillsm3
@lahillsm3 6 жыл бұрын
There you go... you're switching to independent, yourself. And as a person who's "passionate" about driving, I think that's a wise choice... for the many reasons I've listed. Passion and ability is hardly everything; it matters what we drive.

Im a mechanic and love racing. Definitely educated on suspension etc. If i could afford something already built of course id get the best platform. And there is something special in building your own rig with your own ideas. Im no fanboy of any make model or country of origin also. I just wish i didn't like my car so much so i wouldnt have to mod it so much to hang with newer proper better built cars😎. Us motor heads will always find a way lol.
