Just had to add I miss the days when we had our Z28, Trans Am, Mustang rivalries in the high school parking lots. The cars were 10+ years old then (my Camaro was closer to 20 since it was a second generation). One guy had a BEAUTIFUL Fox body mustang with 5 speed, chrome pony wheels, a wicked exhaust and this crazy purple metallic paint job. Well, one day someone called it “The Barney Car” and the name Stuck 🤣

The Fox body Mustang is an awesome ride! I had a 1973 ex NC hwy patrol Fox body Mustang that was so fun to drive daily until I was crashed into from behind at a red light. Nobody was injured, but my precious Mustang was totaled. If you get a chance to own a fox body you won't be disappointed. It's a joy to drive any Mustang... Still have the fox body I bought when I was 18, 27 years ago. I've owned Evos, Corvettes, F Bodies and so many other cars. Kept the fox, there's nothing like it. 300hp they're really manageable and good teachers for real high hp cars. Cause it will jump out and bite you which everyone says about Mustangs but any powerful car will clap your cheeks the second you don't respect it. Now it's a 530hp Ford 6.0 stroker that revs to 7100rpms the car is a total savage and has scared everyone who owns modern cars with "almost that much power." Video was on point. One thing to mention is the fox body out handled the e30 M3 at the time so these cars aren't shit boxes when in tip top shape. Stiffen the chassis and they're amazing.

The Ford 302 is one of the best engines in Detroit history. They're so very easy to work on. They put down a lot of power for their size. The 1987-1991 period is my favorite timeline of the Fox Body. They are such amazing cars to have fun with and shoot down a straightaway. They are very light, giving them an excellent power-to-weight ratio. The sound of the exhaust on the Fox Body 5.0 is my favorite exhaust note, esp when it comes to high revving manuals, just beating a Hellcat exhaust note. I could just imagine cruising in a Fox Body convertible while playing Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, and Van Halen songs, along with some others like Addicted To Love, Give Me All Your Lovin, Rockin Down The Highway, Nothin But A Good Time, and Hip To Be Square.

I’m the proud original owner of a 91 wild strawberry GT convertible. I currently have a gen one coyote in it, but the road to it kinda sucked. When I first bought the car, it was a dog, mainly because of the way is was geared. After several months of owning it, and seeing how slow the car was, I did what most people did. First, I swapped out the rear gear to 3.73 with upgraded axles, and I forget what diff!🤣I then opened up the exhaust, full 2 1/2 including tail pipes with, of course, flowmasters! I also spent wisely and some chassis bracing, in anticipation of future mods. Still in relatively stock form, it was slow. In around the mid nineties, my nephew sold me his Vortech supercharger off his 89. So I had it installed on my stock engine and had lots of fun when I wasn’t blowing head gaskets! So one year, before storing it before winter, I jumped on it a little. I should not have done that. I went to change the oil months later, and it was 50/50 oil and coolant. Thinking my engine was toast, I went with a built 306 ci. and had my blower put on that. I had tons of issues with it, mainly cooling issues, but when it was running cool, it was a beast! So, after many years of beating on my car, ( not abusing it), I developed some internal motor issues that my car was fine to drive except under boost. Again, I get on it I day, pull into my garage. Thankfully, I left the door open and went out there a couple minutes later, and I see flames coming out of the cowl of my hood! I got the flames out, burnt of few fingers, but the fire was at contained to the engine bay. The fire happened in fall of 2010. The body shop owner I knew was a Ford junkie and we discussed doing the coyote swap. I had many worries about being one of the first ones to do this swap. My car actually sat in the body shop waiting for the engine from Ford Racing. Luckily, I had an, agreed value insurance policy that covered the swap. I did have some issues after the swap that are, for now gone. I will say, my car might not have the horse power that I had with the blower, but this Coyote revs completely throughout the rpm range, like when I had the blower. My car is relatively quiet at idle, but stupid loud at wide open throttle!!

I got an 1986 for $1500 3-1/2 years ago. It was my friends and I believe I'm roughly the 3rd or 4th owner. It was sitting since 2006. Didn't start, breaks were a little seize, 2 tires were flat. It took $400 to get it running (fuel pump, fuel filter, battery and cables, oil change, while I'm at it fuel tank gaskets and spark plugs). Engine was shaking a lot because of the engine mounts falling apart. While I was at it (again..) I spent another $500 for valve cover and oil pan gaskets, oil pump, rear main, clutch, throwout and pilot bearings, pivot ball and fork. Everything seemed original and was seeping oil. Currently trying to figure out why it's still shaking once it idles down. Tested the vacuum tree last night with a harbor freight hand pump, blocked off the AC (not hooked up) but didn't get a chance to start it. Will try wires next if the vacuum lines aren't the problem. Once I save up for some tires, I'll be driving it around, even if it does keep shaking.

I wouldn't look at the airbox for a Ford motorsport sticker because it's easy just to stick the original back on. Do you want to check the door frames whether or not the doors shut properly the torque boxes underneath the car , etc. I not worry about the engine because you could drop in a long block for cheap. Or better build one. One modification to look for that a positive is subframe connectors, especially on convertibles as a flexes a bit ridiculous on them. So if the frames were installed back in the 90s - all the better. Save 30 years of flex. Unless you're looking to step into a fully built car, I avoid most unless they've got complete build sheets, and you know who did the work . The weakest part of the engine is the two bolt main. Anything over 500 wheel horsepower and you're asking for a crack block. It's not a matter of if it's a matter of when as a number goes above 500. The 38 cars I've owned my 1990 GT to this day is still my favorite car. Far more so than any mustang that came later (and I've owned eight total). The hatchback is what makes it. I used to be a fit 26 foot two surfboards and an X pattern with the backseats down and have it not in fringe at all on the driver or passenger seat at 6'3". As far as modifications go or at least your first ones - gears, full exhaust, CAI and then save up for a supercharger. Whipple is going to be your best bet particularly on the street. That is a set up. You can run every day and never worry about. Add HC intake, new valve, etc. in combination with the above is the point everybody ends up wanting to sell the car six months later. Mostly because when you get to that power level stuff starts breaking. Great car I'd love to buy another one if I could find a clean GT or LX 5.0 . I miss this simplicity of it. Radio Speedo, and no nanny controls.

It's absolutely insane to see what people pay for these things now days... I remember being able to buy entire parts cars for 300-500 bucks that were complete enough to drive home. Between myself and my circle of friends back then there was probably never less then 20 of these things sitting around at any given time, in back yards and storage units and whatnot. Never had to look too hard to find parts. Was a couple really good years there where it seemed like everyone had a buddy who just went and got a 03/04 Cobra (believe it or not those were like $12-15k when they were 2 or 3 years old) and was looking to unload all their foxbody and 302/351 stuff for a case of beer and a handshake.

Great Video. Finding a stock one these days seems almost impossible. I hardly ever see them on the road anymore...sadly they are dying off quickly. I was part of the foxbody crowd back in the late 90's and early 2000s. We had a lot of fun but didn't respect the fact that these beauties would soon become unobtainium. We killed off a lot of them too with over modification and stupid decisions. Sad.

Have had a few mustangs but what you are missing is the fact they are unibody and will twist the body into a pretzel if you have too much power...don't ask me how I know. It must be heavily modified to handle real power. The LS or coyote swap can't even come come close to the 545 BBF swap. Having 700+hp naturally aspirated is like having full boost in a coyote at all RPMs. Getting 1500HP by adding a turbo to a big block is like having a death wish 🖤
@HernanSpeed4 ай бұрын
Solid point! It’s always a trade off between stiffening up the chassis & weight. This is where the SN95’s do better, it’s essentially a stiffened up Foxbody…and less than 50lbs more (Video dropping soon!). But… anything with 700+hp is a challenge to keep between the lane’s!! Nuts! 🚀🚀 Thanks for watching brother! 👊👊

Hey guys I got a 86 Lincoln with a 5.0 speed density engine I’ve changed the distributor,plugs,wires,map,iac,iat,act, checked for vacuum leaks have rough idle and when you put it in gear it will die you can get it in gear and work the throttle to get it going but it acts horrible going down the road cutting out and what not I pulled the injectors too and had them checked and cleaned it will run smooth at idle sometimes
@HernanSpeed2 ай бұрын
It’s always air or fuel. How did you check for air leaks? A smoker works great.. Make sure the ignition wires aren’t arcing (check in dark). And, check fuel pressure (put a permanent fixed gauge). My first two vehicles were both Fox body GT's. Everything mentioned in the video is spot on. The IROC Z28's of the time were probably technically superior from a performance design standpoint but the Fox-body was unquestionably the more fun car to both drive and ride in. If I remember correctly, 70% of the weight was in the front of the vehicle. So you had a lightweight, short wheelbase RWD with a torquey V8 and no weight over the rearend... burnouts, donuts, power slides. It was effortless and outrageously fun. Those same characteristics lead to most 5.0s ultimately ending up wrapped around trees but they also taught me how to be a better driver. No modern day electonics to reign you in and keep you on the road. Your right foot was your traction control and your steering wheel was your active stability control. The car responded to any input you gave it and that sense of control and feeling so connected to the car is a visceral experience that is sadly missing from most modern performance vehicles. Driving a Fox body aggressively also taught you important lessens about vehicle balance and weight transfer. 5.0 Mustangs could accelerate, they could turn and they could brake - but not at the same time. Something else worth mentioning about the Fox body Mustangs, and one of the other big reasons for their popularity - they were cheap and easy to work on. I kept a 1/2" wrench in the glove box just to loosen the distributor and adjust the ignition timing right at the gas pump depending on which octane rating I could afford - 13 degrees for 93 octane for better performance, 8 degrees for 87 octane when the money was light - it took less than a minute. For comparison, adjusting the base ignition timing on the new SRT 6.4L I recently purchased requires swapping in a modified ECM, installing a security bypass module and purchasing an aftermarket tuner...possibly even dyno tuning... and doing so stores a permanent fault code in the BCM which voids the factory warranty. You could also install components from other Ford vehicles for cheap performance gains. The front rotors and brake calipers from a Lincoln MK8 were a direct swap and offered much better braking because they were designed for stopping a much heavier vehicle. They even cost less than the Mustang brake components at the auto parts store which meant you could put that savings toward upgrading to the next tier brake pad. The intake manifold from the Explorer 5.0 was essentially a cast Cobra intake and those vehicles were plentiful at junkyards. If I remember correctly, Explorer and marine 5.0's used "GT-40P" cylinder heads which were basically Cobra GT-40 heads with higher compression and better exhaust velocity. So for a couple hundred dollars you basically had a Cobra engine in your LX/GT 5.0. Now remove the air silencer and smog pump, install a panel K&N in the stock airbox, a $75 set of underdrive pulleys, an off-road H-pipe with catback exhaust, 1.7:1 roller rockers with 13 deg timing advance and you're pushing 300 hp at the crank which allowed the 5.0 to keep up with the '93 and up LT1 powered F-bodies. As mentioned in the video, your best Fox body performance mod by far is a set of rear end gears. 3.55s for manual transmissions (3.73s are too deep in 1st) and 3.73s or possibly 4.10s in an automatic (4.10s risk burning out the AOD transmissions notoriously weak overdrive band at highway speeds). I eventually "grew up" and moved on to modern Corvettes and SRT vehicles which are undoubtedly superior in every performance metric but none of them have brought me as many smiles as my old 5.0 Mustangs. Sometimes I'll come across a nice, factory appearing Fox-Body online and think about possibly owning another one but I eventually get worried that the experience won't be like I remembered it. They say you should never meet your heroes because you'll be disappointed. How could a vehicle based off the Pinto platform, with a glorified truck engine, drum brakes, a solid axle, a 70/30 weight balance and so much chassis flex you have to weld in frame reinforcements actually be that great of a vehicle? I can't reasonably explain it but from what I vividly recollect 5.0 Mustangs were utterly amazing.
@HernanSpeed2 ай бұрын
You speak only the fact’s!💯💯 I completely understand what you mean about not wanting to meet your heroes, can a Fox live up to our memories… After owning countless Porsche’s, I recently got another 93GT. It made me feel 16 again…the feeling doesn’t go away. How’s it possible? I guess we grow old on the outside, but basically stay the same on the inside.
