Hi, it's nice to to see the real thing, I still have my first ever model train, a little 0-4-0 tank engine and 60 years later it still works 😊.

Hi Tim! One notices immediately that it is a DC machine. The sound of these old engines is unmistakable👍. In the museum are many Oldies but Goldies. Best regards from Hans and Cheers 🍻🇦🇹.

Hello Hans, the old ones are often the best. This was a very good railway and museum, well worth visiting. Tomorrow I start my return to the UK by AVE, TGV, Eurostar and finally a local train down to the South Coast, I should be home by eleven o'clock in the evening, I'm going to need a beer by the time I get home. Cheers. Tim.
Amazing where you find class 52's. The whistle though thought of as steam will also use compressed air and many electric engines having air compressors give a 'toot- toot' .
@Timsvideochannel12 жыл бұрын
The Class 52 Western Diesel's are awesome, although I'm guessing you are referring to the Kriegslok/Deutsche Reichsbahn's Class 52 steam loco 😊. Every museum in Europe seems to have at least one in their collection, which is a fair reflection, because they were produced in large numbers and used all over mainland Europe. I love the Swiss style toot-toot whistle, the sound is a lot friendlier than the modern day equivalent.

@@Timsvideochannel1I was also surprised that in the Swiss railway museum they have a BR52 DRB as an exhibit, apparently without the swastika 😉. Given its expected lifespan of 5-7 war years, it's amazing that some are still running today. Also here in Slovakia, the original BR52 series marked as 555.0 ČSD, later reconstructed for fuel oil heating - 555.3 "Mazutka". Only if I saw correctly, it no longer has the original metal channels for supplying steam to the cylinders, with a square cross-section, the one in the video had classic tubes.

@@martinmackenny The Kriegsloks have proved to be remarkable survivors, they must have been well designed and built to a high standard, not what one might expect from a locomotive constructed as a temporary measure to get Europe moving again after WW2. There are a number of them still working mainly as standby or shunting locomotives on the Banovići Coal Mine railways in Tuzla (Bosnia and Herzegovina). They are a rugged, purposeful locomotive, that still manages look good, a bit like the 9F's here in the UK.

@@Timsvideochannel1 Thanks for the interesting information about BR52 in Tuzla, I didn't know this. At the same time, the Kriegsloks were designed as simplified, with maximum savings in production-intensive parts and copper/brass parts (all-steel boiler - from the casing to the cylinder, simplified parts of the Heusinger distribution, steam supply to the cylinders through sheet channels instead of intricately shaped pipes...). Probably also because of this simplicity and ease of maintenance, they lasted so long.

@@martinmackenny Hi, here is a link to a video I shot showing some of the Tuzla engines - kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGO8kIpqoNt7eqc and another showing a ‘Kriegslok’ on the museum train in Slovenia - kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJ6TpH58l7uNpK8 You might find this one interesting - kzbin.info/www/bejne/hnaZhqmLp96WftE I think their simplicity, as you pointed out has been the key to so many surviving to this day.

3:57 Not hearing the familiar noise[chugga-chugga] of a *"Dampfzug"* here, I almost thought this was an electric loco until I heard the whistle. Being Switzerland, I immediately go into German-Language mode, rejecting the French.
@Timsvideochannel12 жыл бұрын
Hello Neil, this railway runs within a few miles of the French border, most locals speak French, although German is also widely spoken along with a little English. I prefer the quaint Swiss style whistle to the ear shattering noise made by most modern trains.

That was another nice day out, I see RTC have advertised a couple of similar holidays next year, the first is too close to my trip to Poland, although that hasn't been confirmed yet and the second is later in the year and that is tempting.

Thanks for another very interesting video, Tim. A pity about the steam ban, but that unusual locomotive did a good job anyway. Here in NZ, the few vintage steam railways often face bans in our (usually) dry summers. Now it seems that they may be banned permanently due to climate change and the phasing out of all carbon-producing sources. There is talk of adapting a steam loco to run on hydrogen, which would take away some of the character of it, but as long as it was still producing steam and running the loco as it was intended, that would be very acceptable, I think.
@Timsvideochannel12 жыл бұрын
Hello Jim, we lost two steam days from this holiday due to the dry weather, but it didn't spoil the holiday, the replacement locomotives were interesting and on the final day I used my Swiss rail card to visited the steepest cog railway in the world, I look forward to sharing that one with you. I have already noticed that the cost of coal is reducing the length of the operating day and the number of trains running on British heritage railways, although I don't think their operation is under threat. The amount of pollution produced by steam operations in New Zealand is so infinitesimally small that it can't be measured, I hope the NZ Government gets real, it's already done enough damage to its own tourist industry. If they can find an alternative fuel that works without spoiling the real steam locomotive effect, that will be a good thing, I’m sure heritage railways all over the world are looking for cost effective alternatives to coal. Cheers. Tim.

@@Timsvideochannel1 Yes, Tim, the steam trains' contribution to global warming is tiny, but those in authority like to choose easy targets to make people think they are really cracking down on emissions. It would be a tragedy if the trains had to stop running, here or anywhere.
@Timsvideochannel12 жыл бұрын
@@JimNicholls I think people realise that those in authority are out of touch with reality, why should the world give up so much when China just goes on increasing its Co2 emissions?
@JimNicholls2 жыл бұрын
@@Timsvideochannel1 They are now increasing the number of huge coal-burning power stations they are building, in order to provide enough power to charge all the millions of electric cars they are making and selling. But it's OK, because the cars are clean!
@Timsvideochannel12 жыл бұрын
@@JimNichollsIt's good to know the cars are clean, it makes up for all the new power stations in China destroying the planet. Where would we be without the strange logic of climate activists? They must be sponsored by the Chinese to make our own industry so expensive to run that we have to close it and get everything made in China.

It has been Gala season on my local museum and heritage railways, hopefully I'll be sharing some of those videos in the next few weeks and I have just arrived home from a holiday to Northern Spain and the South of France. I'll be uploading a couple of travel videos showing non-railway locations, although most will be visits to railways 😊.
