After some thinking about it I have to appreciate this approach if only to be able to easily run CW plasma without worrying about switch heating. It seems easier to set up than a Class E.

It’s my favorite coil set up and by far easier to set up a compared with a class E Tesla coil. - it will run nonstop for ages without any heating of the switches.
@BrianDhvTinkererАй бұрын
It really is a lot easier than class E. Tuning is way easier too.

Awesome video! Looking forward to the tuning video.... about what frequency was your Tesla coil running? Thank you
@BrianDhvTinkerer3 ай бұрын
250-280 kHz
@BrianDhvTinkerer3 ай бұрын
Just measured it this morning. Resonant freq is 277 kHz. I was basically 2 turns on my primary which was driving up the current. I reduced the resonant cap from 150 nF to a 100 nF cap. Now I’m out at 3 turns and unit is running great!

Running this on AC will destroy the FETs. Not sure I understood you correctly. You meant halfwave rectified?
@willemwallaby2 ай бұрын
He mentions a “12 volt wall adaptor” in his introduction. So- assume something like a generic 12v 2A wall wart.
@willemwallaby2 ай бұрын
He mentions half wave rectified AC further into the video as well.
@BrianDhvTinkerer2 ай бұрын
Yes, exactly exactly. What passes through the diodes is the positive half of the AC sine wave. The upwards slope has a ramping effect on output resulting in spark growth like in a QCW coil

I got to see this coil run at the Tesla fest and I am working on making one of my own. I just got one question. Do the 100 ohm 10 watt resisters really have to be 10 watts? It seems like 2 watts would be plenty.
@BrianDhvTinkererАй бұрын
Great to hear from you. No that is a mistake. It should actually be 100 Ohm 5W ceramic resistors 10W won’t fit on the board.
@BrianDhvTinkererАй бұрын
One more thing, if you’re gonna make the coil the same size as the one I had at the Tesla fest ( 3 1/2 inches magnet PVC and 6 inch tall coil using 34 gauge wire, it’s best to use 100nF and not 150 nF capacitor. I just used quarter inch copper tubing to make the 5 inch diameter primary coil. I used Keftan tape to keep the coil the same height along the circumference. You can also cut up pieces of tygon or silicone tubing and put that spaced around the coil to prevent any of the lturns touching and shorting each other.

Could this principle work up to 1Mhz for HFSSTC's?
@BrianDhvTinkerer2 ай бұрын
The highest frequency we’ve been able to operate these is 500 kHz

It is possible to make this a DC output Tesla Coil?
@BrianDhvTinkerer3 ай бұрын
Yes absolutely. Instead of supplying AC just put in DC 0-60V and it will work with a silent hissing sound of the DC plasma. Adding a class A amplifier in the neg rail of the DC input will allow AM musical output

Bill of materials doesn’t include the two IRFP260N MOSFETs. IRFP 460N would work just as well.
