We have family (Templetons) that live by the old school out at Homebush. Story goes - some time ago one of them was walking along the rail line on their way somewhere and they came across a gold nugget amongst the old mullock they used as ballast back then.

At 37:30 you can see the abandoned railway switch/turnout they were going to install, as was part of the original Mildura Basin project. I wonder what they'll do with it to be honest?

Do sheep often walk across the tracks?
@RichardFelstead194913 күн бұрын
Some times but an express travelling at 70mph won't be able to stop in time. Back in my day early 70's collected a few .Running Up SOP collected 2 cows near Tullamarine.When we pulled into Spencer Street we had cow guts over front of engine which was an X class. Fortunately this train was running relatively slowly.

Unfortunately as someone that grew up on a farm and is now 58, and live rural still, farmers and good quality fencing seems to be a thing of the past and they think star pickets and wire are up to the task when often they are not. Not compared to the solid wooden posts we used to use. Star pickets collapse or lean very quickly letting cattle and sheep out.

@@RichardFelstead1949 I was on a Gippsland train (behind N 464) to Southern Cross on January 28 and as the train approached the LaTrobe River between Kilmany and Rosedale the driver gave a series of long horn blasts. We then heard some thuds followed by a shower of ballast and obviously something a lot larger under the floor of the carriages. I also spotted some cows running from the track. So it wasn't too hard to work out what happened. Speed was reduced as the conductor did a walk through, presumably to listen for any problems. Apparently there were none and we resumed normal speed. I understand some hosing down occurred at Traralgon.
