Beautiful video! Such a shame that locomotive services have been replaced on the Bairnsdale line. The V/Locity replacement is really not adequate IMO.

@@driver667 At suitable speed (or lack thereof), yes, trains can get around very sharp curves. I remember the very tight broad gauge curve of the old Co-Op siding at Trafalgar. I've never seen a photo of anything on it thought. My 5" railway has fairly generous curves for the gauge. Means I can run at higher speeds though. But when I eventually extend it, I'm going to have to have at least one less-than-ideal radius curve on my mainline. It is what it is. I'll make do. 😁

The rack from this direction starts from Dubbil Barril and runs through Rinadeena to Halls Creek. The section from Lower Landing to Rinadeena is not open to passengers at this stage as track work is being performed on this section. A video coming up on this channel in the near future will start from the Queenstown end and run through to Rinadeena showing the portion of the rack that is running passengers at this point in time. My wife and I drove our Mini Minor out there and a short distance on the old rail bed in the 1970s. This was after the original track had been pulled up.. Could not believe how muddy and dead that the King River looked beside us? I still look at the old pictures? I have only ever been up the West Coast a few times, but always remember it.. Never been on the train though? It all looked a lot different then.. The old rail bed soon got too rough (and the wet potholes too deep) for the Mini, (The same Mini, that I drove to see a lot of the Bell Bay line as it was built)? Then we returned to Strahan and then back to Queenstown, on our honeymoon.. Thanks for another great view of the tracks in Tassie.. I Really appreciate it, as I doubt that we will ever get up that way again?

The Swan Hill Piangil was a service paid for by the Education Department. I travelled in the van of a wheety to Kooloonong, the guard told me there are two mile posts, it was reported missing and a crew came to replace it but found the original buried in the sand so placed it opposit it. The guard told me near Natya the loco ran out of fuel and had to get a light engine from Bendigo. The line was meant to run to Boundary Bend but never happened. The Kooloolong line had the last Postal Motor, a gangers trolley service paid for by the Postmaster General’s Department to deliver mail. Ran from Piangil, it had to be push started and the petrol turned off when starting so it wouldn’t run off on it’s own. The driver would turn off the motor as it approaced a station and it would stop exactly at the platform.

I frequently had to stay in Strahan for work. Bob Williams was the Marine Board of Hobart Strahan slipway master. Bob and his lovely (name I just cannot remember apologies), wife would ask me for tea after jobs done. Bob had been a fettler (ganger) before 1963 on the Abt and explained in detail how important to pack and keep the rail head at a heights (surface) relative to the root of the rack, 4 -1/4 inch?, otherwise the loco cogs would not mesh properly and if too high lift the engine if it went beyond allowable floating tolerance of cogs bottoming out. From around (about 1993) the kitchen table the couple told me of their wedding day when bride and her father (station master at one of the stations Dubbil Barril??) had to Kalamazoo (gangers hand trolley) to Strahan to meet the groom and wedding partyin her wedding dress..year?...Something right out of 'Petticoat Junction'!

ive been a disused railway chaser since i was in nappies. we found a very narrow gauge railway buried in the back yard of the building across the road. it was used to move goods off the street into directly behind the old bakery. there was a set of points and i think there was a sort of turntable. i cut my finger on broken glass digging for it. my friend's mother saw the blood and panicked. she held me over a concrete laundry trough to wash the dirt off then took me home. i didnt know what blood was. ive still got the scar. bonus information. this yard was the long-term storage location of the jennings cart. the jennings sold it to the carlton and united breweries who dragged it out every moomba and royal show. cub had more than one cart. the jenniongs cart had a roof and was the biggest they had. my mum used to go to the royal show in it when she was a kid.
