Drivers eye view, North Shore to Newport SG, Oct 2023

Travel with the train driver as we journey from North Shore to Newport on the interstate standard gauge line to Melbourne from Adelaide running a heritage passenger train with an S class locomotive made in the 1950's. October 2023.

The station building at Williams Landing is in the style of an old VR passenger carriage in blue livery. I always feel very nostalgic when I drive past it! Kudos to the architects. 😃

G'day, the line to Gelong to Melbourne was only two lines for a long time the line you were running on must be the newcomer, I'm not a fan of the new concept of railway stations I still like the old historical building retained as part of the upgrade, thanks for the trip down the line, cheers mate, Neil 🤠.

The line we are on is the standard gauge interstate line. The Geelong line beside us are the local tracks to Geelong and are broad gauge. Glad you enjoyed the ride 👍 😀

I was under the impression that the "S" class belonged to the Seymour people,yet it ends at Newport ,the home of 707 Operations and Steamrail,was it on loan?

It didn't end up at Newport, there is no standard gauge into Newport Workshops. There is one more instalment of this trip to go. 👍🤣

I wonder if it would be viable to make a Standard Gauge platform at Werribee or Newport similar to the ones at Broadmeadows and North Shore? Just for a bit of convenience for passengers who want to ride on The Overland or other SG passenger trains heading that way so they don't have to go all the way to Southern Cross in order to board.

Nice idea but I don't think it will happen. Passengers travel to North Shore to board if they are not going into Melbourne. 🤔👍😊

I preferred going to Melbourne or back to Geelong via Werribee rather than the regional rail link via Tarneit/Wyndham vale. It's a shame V/Line doesn't occasionally train drivers on this route so that when there are problems, they could go via the old route like they used to.

There are not many of us still qualified via Werribee. Occasionally I have run via Werribee when there have been problems via the RRL. 👍😊

I’m curious with how the speed signalling works on the line. The starting signals from the loop line can only display a medium speed aspect and the following signal is an automatic acting as a distant for the next loop so how does the train get permission to resume normal speed without a signal or is it just based on the idea that once the train is clear of the points that they can return to normal speed? I doubt they’d be travelling at 40km/h across an entire section so I’m assuming there’s a resumption of normal speed at some point

During my time at Wodonga Locomotive Depot (1969-1974), the driver could exit a loop at 25 mph (we're talking ancient history here), and resume normal/maximum speed once the last carriage has departed the loop.
