Same thing happened to my wife and daughter they were 200 miles from home and stopped at a McDonalds in Phila had lunch when they were done the car was gone . They thought it was stolen so the called the cops . The cop that showed new what happened he said the owner of McDonalds had a contract with a towing company and any car in there lot for more then a 1/2 hour gets towed . They called the tower and they had the car said it would be 80 dollers for the tow and 75 dollers lot fee she was 10 dollers short and they would not give the car to here by the time I got there they were closed so we had to drive back down the next day we were there when they opened . The owner charged us 75 more dollers for it being there over nite total 230 dollers . When my wife called McDonald s about it the owner said they only give there custermers 1/2 hours to eat we later found out the owner of McDonald was getting a kick back from the towing company

There was a case in Georgia some years back where a truck driver went to where he had his truck parked and it was gone and was ready to leave. He called the owner of the property where he parked and the owner didn't know anything about it. The owner was a friend and had given him permission to park. After driving around looking he found his truck at a tow yard and instead of arguing with the people he got law enforcement involved. The truck was not towed but driven to the lot and the person who drove it broke a wing window to get it. You guessed it. Somebody went to jail. They were charged with stealing the truck and since it was a car hauler they were also charged with stealing the cars on it. I think the driver even filed suit because he owned the truck.

what they do is put the place under surveillance and count the amount of tows over a spot period during a month then audit them later on looking pacifically at a certain month and that did the observation which in modern times doesn't always mean someone has to be there they use camera's in parked vehicles and so on .. its also a racketeering investigation on top of tax evasion

There appears to be a predatory culture in the towing industry. I drove a tow truck part time about 50 years ago. The owners of a local funeral parlor would tip off the tow company whenever there was a viewing that attracted a large crowd. We would be sent to tow cars that were on the side streets. Methinks that everyone made money ( except us $2 an hour guys ).

In my state a tow company has to be bonded to repair transmissions and other damages from towing. I ran a tow company but we used rollback trucks and avoided using the wheel lifts except if the car was totaled. We did have a few businesses we contracted to tow for but a car had to be parked for days if not weeks before we picked it up and that was after placing a notice sticker on the door with our contact info offering to tow it to their home or local shop for 40 dollars if vehicle had broke down and also stated a date usually 7 days from date of sticker placement the vehicle would be towed. If after 7 days car is still there with sticker in place we contacted our police department and made entry into vehicle to run vin numbers to make sure vehicle wasnt stolen (sometimes they were) and inventory vehicle contents before pulling vehicle onto the tow truck. Dont be greedy and people will respect you. Stolen vehicles were towed to police department for 40 bucks that someone getting their vehicle back after it being stolen never blinked an eye about.

Why Me? There's maximum fees we can charge and receipts must be given. My company doesn't have printers in the trucks but we have the ability to email. I can tell you these drivers want cash because they are likely trying to pocket it. When i do impounds like this, i prefer cards. Run the card, email you a receipt, done. Cash is a pain because now I'm responsible for that till end of shift.

The property owner has every right to have your car towed. what the owner of the property did and what the towing company is doing is illegal. the owner of the property was spotting cars for the towing company to tow. property owners don't just happen to be on their property taking pics of cars unless someone called them about a problem on their property. what the towing company did was illegal because no card readers, no ATM on property, signs facing the wrong way to the entrance, and its obvious that they weren't calling the police. all of these give the people not only a great legal case against the towing company but it also gives them the legal right to take their cars back without having to pay the towing company one cent.

The guy runs a business in Dallas near a bunch of nightclubs. There are "no parking, you will be towed" signs everywhere, plus a lot of surveillance cameras, He posts the video from the cameras. You see time and time again, people pull into the lot, and you can see them obviously reading the no parking signs (they are plastered everywhere) then park anyway, then are astonished that they got towed, just like the signs that they read said they would.

Any business is free to post its parking as tow-away for those parked illegitimately (not customers of the business).. It is common for towing services to demand cash upfront to release a vehicle from impound.. There is nothing illegal or suspicious about it. Pay the fee ($300 is not out of line for this kind of towing) and forget about a lawsuit (which they're guaranteed to lose, anyway)

My buddy had a townhouse in Tanyard Springs and one day I was over there helping him pressure was his driveway and he had his suv on the street in front of the driveway, middle of the day on the weekend. We watched one of their trucks circle the block three times staring at his suv before finally stopping and threatening that they could legally tow it because 2 feet of it was past the no parking sign. My friend is a retired Marine and told them it's his vehicle and they were more then welcome to try and see how far they would get.

Yeah, maybe the lot is at fault for not accepting cards, but that's also after the fact and not the main focus here. Maybe it's lack of signs (6 seems fine as that's no WalMart-sized lot) or whatever, but it seems business as usual to me. Nothing surprising.

The Tow company is definitely at fault. In fact this company broke way too many tow laws that made the tows illegal. First, they didn't offer an alternate way to pay the drop fee (which under MD law is required). That is they only wanted cash, but didn't want to take credit/debit cards, or check. Secondly, this company used spotters. That is hyper illegal. That means that the supposed "owner" of the lot was getting a kickback for each car towed. Also the courts ruled that not only were the tows were illegal, but the lot owner didn't own the lot. He owned absolutely nothing. The lot was owned by the city.

It’s pretty clear to me that these people have no case. They were parked in lots that they shouldn’t have been parked in. That’s life. I hate being towed as much as the next guy but these people were in lots that weren’t for that restaurant.

Jaber baber, there is a lot of grey area and it's almost impossible to know who owns what in the matter of seconds. Just look at Ashley's comment, Coffman didn't even actually own the lot the city did meaning anyone is allowed to park there but Coffman tried to make it as if he owned it. Things aren't as black and white as you want them to be kid.

Insurance. If your car gets broken into, damaged or you get hurt, you are not covered by the closed business insurance. Since care are towed, you have no right to be there. No insurance coverage. The restaurant you are visiting has no responsibility since their insurance does not cover people or items off properly.

Ah just go on CL find a cheap to free large RV and let it break down in their lot in a hard to tow out spot where they will need a crane.... LOL. Remember not to title the thing so it can't come back to you either. Tow companies will not want to touch that thing because it's costly and hard to remove and worth nothing, the building owner will have to pay to have it "recovered" I wouldn't advise any property damage to avoid any criminal charges.

We have this same problem in linn county iowa with a company named Jons towing thet drive through trailer courts and hook up to any vehicale they want to they have even towed vehicales out of an overflow lot where i live in marion and as a resident of the trailer court you pay to park any extra vehicales you have down there
