I have a couple of friends who prefer to let the steering slide back in their hands to its straight position when completing a turn. Whereas other people prefer to manually turn the steering wheel back. As for myself, I prefer to do it manually like you and the rest of the people who are like us.

I came back again in this video to simply say "Thank you" to both of you for this simple and yet very informative video (same thing goes with the Left Turns Video) Last oct 22, i passed the final road test and got my driving license. we got our car last 6th of nov. and i've been enjoying it. whenever i make right and left turns i remember you guys. :) Thanks a lot. This may not be the only video/channels i watched for car driving lessons/tips but this channel is one of the best choices for those learning how to drive safely and defensively. God Bless your whole team. P.S. this does not mean i will stop watching videos from this channel, there's still a lot of things to learn.

@DriversEdDirect
@DriversEdDirect Жыл бұрын
Hello!! Thanks for sharing and so sorry to hear that you failed. Without seeing the situation first hand, it is hard to speculate what the examiner didn't like about your stop before the right turn. The most common things they may have been checking for in this situation might be: - Did you come to a full complete stop behind the limit line before you rolled forward to get a better view? The examiner needs to feel your car completely stop (wheels lock)... about 2-3 seconds of actually being fully stopped is appropriate. - When you stopped before the limit line, did you do full traffic checks of the sidewalk and road by looking left-right-left and over your right shoulder (blind spot check to the right because you will be turning right)? If you did a full stop but did not do all of your traffic checks before rolling forward, that could also be an auto-fail. Hope that helps! Best of luck to you on your next test and thank you for watching!!

Thank you for an overall great video. I’m sorry if I missed it, but allowing arms to cross when making tight turns goes against everything I’ve ever learned. If the air bag blows, it will break your arms on your face and might kill you. Shouldn’t a hand shuffle be used instead? What is the official guidance on this? Can you point to it in any official documentation guidance?
@DriversEdDirect
@DriversEdDirect 2 ай бұрын
Hello! Thank you for your thoughtful comment and for the kind words about our video! We’re glad you found it helpful and appreciate you highlighting an important safety consideration. At Drivers Ed Direct, we prioritize both safety and control in our teaching methods. Push-pull steering is indeed safer in the rare event of airbag deployment during a turn, as it keeps the driver’s arms out of the airbag’s path. However, the primary goal of steering is always to maintain the best possible control of the vehicle, especially in emergency situations. Hand-over-hand steering allows for faster and more precise steering inputs, which can be critical for quick maneuvers to avoid a collision or navigate unexpected obstacles. This method provides greater leverage, enabling quicker and more effective responses. Both the California DMV and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recognize hand-over-hand steering as effective for tight turns and skid recovery, highlighting its value in scenarios that require immediate and sharp steering adjustments. If you only learn the shuffle method (push-pull steering), you may not feel comfortable or confident when an emergency arises and rapid steering is required. While push-pull steering is a valuable technique, especially where airbag safety is a concern, hand-over-hand steering remains highly effective for both routine driving and emergency maneuvers. The key is to use the technique that best suits the situation. We encourage all drivers to become comfortable with both methods to ensure they can adapt to whatever the road presents. Thank you again for your comment, and we’re happy to have your support as we work to make driving safer for everyone.

I usually allow the steering wheel to get back straight on it's own, while holding it slightly. Is that wrong for the driving test 🤔
@DriversEdDirect
@DriversEdDirect Жыл бұрын
Hello! That is completely fine as long as you maintain contact with the wheel as it "slides" back into position as you complete your turn... you described it perfectly, "holding it slightly". Your hands need to be in ready position to take full control of the wheel in case of an emergency situation. Hope that helps!

When doing right turns, do I always have to turn into the right-most hand lane? How do I know if it is a driving lane or not? Am I allowed to turn right into parking lanes and bus lanes? My road test is tomorrow and that is the only thing I am nervous about.
@DriversEdDirect
@DriversEdDirect 10 ай бұрын
Great question! You want to turn into the rightmost lane that is a driving lane... so you would not turn into a bike lane, bus lane, or parking lane. If you do accidentally turn into a parking lane, don't panic. Just make sure you make a proper lane change into the driving lane (don't just swerve over). Also, keep in mind that if you don't turn into the rightmost lane, it is NOT an auto fail, it is just one point off. If you accidentally turn into the middle lane, for example, just stay in that lane and don't panic - do not swerve back into the rightmost lane - that would actually be a potential auto-fail. Hope that helps!

What happens if I inch forward and a pedestrian appear on my right wanting to cross the road , because I would have blocked the cross walk
@DriversEdDirect
@DriversEdDirect 4 ай бұрын
Hello! Great question! If this happens during your drive test, it could be an automatic fail because you impeded the pedestrian's right-of-way. This is why it's important to scan the sidewalks for pedestrians before checking for traffic. We also recommend not making a right turn on a red light during your test to avoid this situation. If you do find yourself blocking a pedestrian in the crosswalk, stop immediately and give them the right-of-way. Don't panic or try to reverse; just stay calm and make sure the pedestrian is safe before proceeding. Hope that helps!

Im practicing driving and just got my permit from passing the written exam but my problem is turnings and steering wheel. @DriversEdDirect
@DriversEdDirect 19 күн бұрын
Hey there! First of all, CONGRATS on passing the written exam and getting your permit - that's a huge accomplishment! It's totally normal to feel a bit unsure when it comes to turns and steering; many new drivers go through that phase. The good news is, it gets easier with practice! Here are a few tips that might help: 1. Focus on your hand positioning - Keep both hands on the wheel at about the 9 and 3 o'clock positions. This gives you better control, especially when making turns. 2. Start with gentle turns - Try to make your turns smoothly and not too sharply. Over time, you'll get a better feel for how much to turn the wheel. 3. Practice with a more experienced driver - If possible, have someone with experience in the car to guide you and give feedback on your steering. 4. Go slow and give yourself time - It's great that you're taking it slow! The more you practice, the more natural it will feel. 5. Remember, you're doing great, and it's completely normal to feel a little challenged early on. Keep practicing, and don't get discouraged - every mistake is just a step towards getting better. If you have any questions or just need a little more guidance, feel free to reach out. You've got this!

one thing I don't understand is what are you supposed to do if there are dangerous vehicles behind you? Not slow down? Just barrel through the intersection and hope for the best?? If I'm driving safely but they're driving way too fast and close to me what can I really do about it to stop them from rear ending me?
@DriversEdDirect
@DriversEdDirect 8 ай бұрын
Hello and great question, you are thinking like a true defensive driver! Because you can't control the actions of other drivers, you have to do your best to set yourself up for success. For example, if you know you need to slow down soon but notice someone coming too fast behind you, start slowing down sooner than normal and slow down more gradually so that the driver behind you will be forced to also start slowing sooner and have more time to react to you. Also, there will be times where you are thinking about turning, but you notice the fast car charging from behind, so you might change your mind and decide not to make the turn at that intersection and wait for a safer situation further down the road to turn right. Also, create space cushions all around your vehicle so that in the event of a tailgater approaching quickly and about to hit you, you have some wiggle room to pull forward a bit or even move into another lane safely. Hope that helps!

what is the best thing to do if you must stop near the curb before turning but there is a fast approaching car from behind?
@DriversEdDirect
@DriversEdDirect 8 ай бұрын
Hello! Great question. This is why it is important to always be aware of your surroundings. If you notice fast moving vehicles behind you, then make sure you slow yourself down more gradually - this will force the cars behind you to begin to brake sooner. Also, if you leave "escape routes" in front of and around your vehicle, you'll be able to maneuver or move out of the way when dangerous situations arise. Hope that helps!

Hello! Yes, you can definitely wait for a green light to make your turn. There is no law that says you have to make a right on red. However, just know there may be situations where drivers behind you become impatient and honk if they feel you are not making your turn when all is safe. Learning how to turn on a red light safely and legally is a good thing - but until you have more confidence, it is OK to wait!

@DriversEdDirect
@DriversEdDirect Жыл бұрын
Hello and best of luck to you! Definitely read the DMV Handbook several times and hire a driving instructor if you are able to. If you don't have access to an instructor, try to practice (assuming you have a driving permit of course) with a patient and knowledgeable adult driver who can guide you. Watching videos can help too, but ultimately getting behind the wheel is what will grow your skill. Start off in an empty parking lot to learn the basics before heading out onto neighborhood streets. Once you have mastered the neighborhoods, then you can start practicing on busier city streets. Again, always have an adult licensed driver in the passenger seat next to you. Hope that helps!

Hello, always yield to pedestrians even when you have a green light. If a pedestrian is in the crosswalk coming towards you, you should let them reach the sidewalk before turning. If the pedestrian is walking away from you, let them get at least halfway across the street before making your turn. Hope that helps!

I am not 100% sure what you are asking, but after you stop at a stop sign but need to roll forward a bit more to get a better view of traffic, you just "inch out" or "roll forward" at a very slow pace. The slower you go, the better! Your speedometer might only hit 1 or 2 mph. Hope that helps!

@@DriversEdDirect I got your point and when you roll forward at 1,2 mile speed if you dont see any vehicles do you need to make 2 nd stop or can you go by increasing speed?
@DriversEdDirect
@DriversEdDirect 7 ай бұрын
@@nazmashaik390 Hello, it depends on the situation. If you can see clearly after rolling forward and everything looks safe, then you can just make your turn without stopping again. Of course, if you see a car or pedestrian coming after you roll forward and it is not safe to go, then you would stop again and wait until everything is clear for you to go. Hope that helps!

the driving instructors I've got right now are constantly telling me to let the wheel slide back into its straight position on my turns and I have so much trouble doing that. None of the videos I've seen here on youtube have instructors that are enforcing that. My brain just doesn't want to let the wheel slide. I have a fear of driving, and anxiety, so I don't like letting my grip off of the wheel like they keep telling me to let the wheel slide. (my palms are also sweaty during lessons because of my anxiety and I've explained that to them but they don't seem to get it) It's made me not want to go back and get more lessons from them because I constantly feel like I'm doing everything wrong and they won't move me on until I start letting the wheel slide back.

Hello! We address the slide back technique here: 14:13 - but the reason we don't teach that method FIRST is that we feel it is important for our students to learn how to control the steering wheel using hand over hand and the shuffle method. These concepts ensure that our students can skillfully control the wheel, and once that has been demonstrated, we will teach the slide back technique as well. Again, there is nothing wrong with the slide-back technique and it is actually preferred for most turns once you get the hang of it, but there are other methods of counter-steering that provide more control in certain situations. Anyway, for your specific situation with anxiety and sweaty palms, please hang in there! Trust us, it will get easier over time and will someday become very easy for you to execute. Until then, just know that there will be some patience and practice involved to get there. But you can do it!!

How do you the right turns in California with a bike lane?
@DriversEdDirect
@DriversEdDirect 4 ай бұрын
Hello! Thanks for reaching out. In short, the answer is you can always enter a bike lane for up to 200 feet before making a right turn, regardless of the road marking (broken or solid). In fact, you must enter the bike lane when making a right if there is one next to you. You must always signal, check your mirrors, and look over your shoulder (checking your blind spot) before entering the bike lane as it is technically a lane change. The acronym we use for this when teaching students is S.M.O.G. (Signal, Mirror, Over-the-Shoulder, Go). Here are some of our videos timestamped with discussions specifically on bike lanes: Bike lane discussion and example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZnRYmxtftJqga8si=eytRdHl2fgOsv-r5&t=729 Another bike lane example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aHS7n4SjqsmcepIsi=YNbveDF-6YfI15Hb&t=152 Illustrations of bike lane use (review): kzbin.info/www/bejne/aHS7n4SjqsmcepIsi=l6ckwjcAFrw6gVrq&t=448 Very brief bike lane mention during SMOG discussion: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2jLZpWCfq6ihKssi=SavfyTdGT54xl6VQ&t=1120 Also, here is some information from the CA Driver Handbook (scroll down a bit) discussing bike lanes: www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/navigating-the-roads/ Hope that helps!

Or the slide back to the middle
@DriversEdDirect
@DriversEdDirect 11 ай бұрын
Hello! Great question! The main thing you need to do is maintain control of the vehicle at all times. If you let the wheel slide back to the middle position, that is perfectly fine but you must do it smoothly and in a controlled fashion, making sure your fingers (both hands) keep contact with the wheel as it slides back into position - that way you can easily and quickly grab the wheel at a moments notice. Hope that helps!

Hello again, re-posting this here in case you missed our previous response, thanks: Hello!!

@DriversEdDirect
@DriversEdDirect 5 ай бұрын
Hello! While the mirror checks during SMOG may count as the rear-view mirror check when braking, the main point to remember is that you always need to check what's behind you before you brake. If that happens during SMOG, then great. But in general, you want to always be aware of what's behind you before you brake. Doing frequent mirror checks while you drive will help you accomplish this because you'll always be more aware of what's behind and around you. Hope that helps!
