Did our video help you? If so, consider buying us a beer: bit.ly/3feE6tJ
In this video, we share with you a repair I had done on the front driveshaft of my 85 Toyota 4runner. I used South Bay Driveline located in San Jose. They have over 30 years experience in the business and do really good work for a fair price. If you are in the Bay Area and need some driveshaft work done or maybe need some custom driveshafts made, I highly recommend you check them out.

When talking about the Trail Gear Heavy Duty Driveline, I mention you wouldn't want to use it for the rear driveshaft because it's not recommended to run this at highway speeds. What I forgot to mention is it would be perfectly appropriate to run it in the rear if your rig is a dedicated trail rig and you trailer it to the trails.

I really liked to ease of getting it fixed. I didn't have to ship my driveshaft to anyone or take a bunch of measurements to order a new one online. I removed it in their parking lot and left it with them. 3 days later, I got a call it was ready for pickup. That's hard to beat.

Yeah, I wanted to mention the lubrication of the splines because I think most people don't realize how poorly that slip yoke zerk fitting does with getting the splines properly lubricated to reduce wear.

Hi Tim. Thanks for all the work you put in producing these videos. I’m almost done with the 4WD swap on a 99 Prerunner. Just need a rear driveshaft to complete the job. Was planning to use South Bay Driveline to shorten the intermediate shaft. Went down today and they quoted $670 to shorten the intermediate shaft and lengthen the rear shaft. I understood the intermediate shaft shortening together with rebalancing would cost $295. I was surprised when also being hit with the need to lengthen the rear shaft by an inch. They said this is required to accommodate my trucks 2” lift. Never heard of this before. When I suggested only shortening the intermediate shaft, they indicated it would not be safe and would not do it. Almost $700 to reuse an old shaft with 220k miles seems like a bad choice. What are your thoughts?
@TimmyTheToolman

Seems kind of weird to me too. You could possibly order a shaft from Tom Woods. Maybe see what they would charge.

Check your motor mounts and transmission mount. One of them might have become separated causing the extra vibration. Watch this video:kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZCXdZyvrNiGmM0

Upon acceleration on my 3rd Gen 4runner , I had heard clicking sounds coming from Center or Rear End . Now I'm feeling vibrations upon acceleration until I get to higher speeds of around 50mph . However at speeds at or in excess of 70+ , vibrations become evident at cruise or descent . I'm thinking it's either Ujoints or driveshafts . What Brand parts would you recommend and where to get them .
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Mike, have you inspected the rear driveshaft to see if there's play in any of the u-joints? Maybe all they need is some grease? When was the last time you greased all the zerk fittings? The double cardan joint has 3 zerk fittings. One for each u-joint and one for the center ball. Then you have one zerk fitting for the rear u-joint and one for the slip yoke. Toyota doesn't sell replacement u-joints for the double cardan joint. If those go bad or the center ball goes bad, you're either left with using parts that aren't the greatest or you get yourself another driveshaft. If the rear u-joint goes bad, you can replace it with a high quality u-joint from Toyota.

7:15 i just want to say on my tacoma it works great... my dad must have pumped a tube in there or something because if i give it half a pump from a grease gun it squirts out the splines in fact there is a bunch of flung grease on the body crossmember and transmission from that driveshaft
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 5 жыл бұрын
Hey James, that's good that the zerk fitting for greasing the slip yoke is working out for you. Yeah, your dad must have pumped it full of grease.

(Sorry I left this exact question on another video of yours but I just had to bring this to your attention again).... Is the slip yoke "thump" an urban legend? Interesting thing I came across the other day with my always happening "thump". I was out on a smooth pavement hilly country road when I had to come to a stop going up hill. Figuring I had plenty of time to do so I let the hill itslef slow my 4Runner down rather than use my brakes and so what da you know.... it still did the thump?? Keep in mind the hill slowed me down going up it very slow. In other words it took me a long time to come to a stop with out ever using the brake.
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 3 жыл бұрын
That's interesting. My first thought about that thump problem is it was the transmission finally dropping into first. But, when I was first diagnosing this issue, a good greasing of the slip yoke stopped the thump for a while. That was a clear indication to me that it was a driveshaft issue. I don't think I've ever had the thump on a hilll though like you're describing. Maybe it's a hard transmission downshift in your situation.
@andyz3925
@andyz3925 3 жыл бұрын
@@TimmyTheToolman yesss it's what I've always figured.... late transmission down shifting into 1st. Servicing the slip yoke maybe is just softening the thump temporarily? I'm about to purchase a transmission from Street Smart transmission. I'll get back with you in time to let you know if the Thump goes away
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 3 жыл бұрын
@@andyz3925 Who knows if the two are related or not. My 2000 has a bad thump again when I come to a stop and I have just learned to live with it. I will eventually get an entirely different driveshaft and then I'll know without a doubt if it was the driveshaft causing the rear end thump or it was the transmission all along.

@@TimmyTheToolman to make this conversation further interesting.... .. I've had my driveshaft replaced and U-joints and still there is a Thump?

Just wondering what the cost was to have the shop fix the drive shaft. Labor cost. I will say my 85 front drive shaft spline is a heck of a lot shorter. Now I lengthened my front shaft myself. Now with that said it's only for low speed wheeling. It's not balanced and not as true as it should be. lol!
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Lance, I'll get back to you on this. I think I remember it was $150 labor but I'll give you the accurate amount tomorrow. I'm at work and don't have the invoice with me. I know Trail Gear charges $380 for the Heavy Duty Driveline Kit.
@TimmyTheToolman

Hey Lance, I remembered correctly. The labor was $150. The labor will obviously change depending on how involved the job is for them.
