highly underappreciated comment, and so true! Had the same thought! That said, the ability to focus on the long term goal and through that, preemptively mellow the sacrifice as an incentive to push on rather than to avoid the pain, is something none of us are always up to I suppose, and to see someone voice that process so concisely and convincingly, especially towards himself, is a lesson I happily adopt in life!

@@qlcrane8019 You'd be surprised how restrictive investment firms are in regards to withdrawing money. Guarantee he put at least 90% of his earnings in one, and they won't let him take much of that out if any of it for this sort of business venture. This was absolutely a labor of love for him.

@@qlcrane8019you can’t save money if “literally having the money” is your definition of “can afford it.” Ppl in control of their personal finances earmark different revenue streams for different things. He mentioned his wife and daughters so he most certainly has one stream of money that is his to play with as he sees fit and doesn’t want to do anything that eats into the family funds. Also he quoted a single machine that costs $100k but that wasn’t the only thing his shop needed. He also mentioned paying the salaries of his employees for months before the business becomes profitable. It’s funny but by demonstrating the skills and impulse control to avoid blowing through his fortune, a number of financially illiterate people in the comments are wondering if he’s lost his money.

He already said he used enough of his own personal funds that they needed the business to start using its assets to fund the workshop. If you keep endlessly funding a business with your own personal bank account, it isn't successful.

I find when I sell stuff that I really love after a while I find I don't miss it. The challenge of a new project or experience outweighs the loss for me. I think Richard is keyed into this but hasn't fully experienced this yet and I hope it's worked out for him.

As a car guy, with a passion for motor vehicles. Especially the ones that we have poured heart, soul and love into making, I get his emotions. It becomes so difficult to release a vehicle once it has become such a part of our world or holds such meaning for us. But the sacrifice in this case, I can respect. You sometimes must sacrifice a few things, to restore far more.

Did YOU know, if YOU drive with "Passion" a cop would pull YOU over for DWI? The Heart only pumps blood and there is NO PROOF of a human Soul so, YOU are only, "A car guy"with a steering weel in YOUR hands. Only in a car, I hope. A steering weel will gt in YOUR way if YOUR are in bed. One doesn´t "Get" emotions. One, "Feels". emotions. Then I bought a ´63 Continental for the girls and to be able to sleep in it on my way across the country from NYC to LA. @Lassi Kinnunen 81 Regardless...most of us who restore cars use our disposable income to do it. It becomes dodgy when we dip into funds we didn't budget. So it's all relative. I don't know what this man's expenses are, or where the other money, no matter how much, is allocated. But this selling of his collection does represent having to sell in order to pay, versus this notion that there's an unlimited supply of money...just like the rest of us.

I owned a brand new Green Z900 just like that in 1975. I sold it in 1979 to help buy my first car. I bought another one in 1995 - identical - and kept it until last year when I sold it to a new caring owner. It was part of my life and I miss it.

He was wealthy prior to the amazon deal, and it’s rumoured their pay went up substantially following their exit from the BBC. 100k is not a lot compared to his historical income so the logical explanation is that this is all for drama.

When the top gear team moved from the BBC to Amazon Studios in 2016, Richard started earning an annual $7 million salary, they paid the team May Clarkson and Hammond around £250 million pounds for the time with Amazon. I will give the tissue’s a miss as more than likely he can afford an oven and a workshop or two or three or even four workshops but he sells the hard luck story well to the mugs.

Exactly my thoughts. He probably got bored with these vehicles and wanted to sell them anyway, but it adds a bit of a story to the program. With all of his millions, £200k is nothing .

From 2015 : The Financial Times reports that Amazon has paid $250million for 36 episodes of the Top Gear replacement starring Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond. Initial reaction on Twitter by some was shock at the amount, but it's not actually shocking at all.

I think Richard did a great thing to sell the collection and should sell the rest so more people can enjoy these classic art pieces,and it goes for all collectors to please enjoy the cars and pass them on to others so they can be enjoyed because pretty soon the electric cars will take over the world and it’s a shame these beautiful machines are collecting dust in warehouses!

not only that , using "personal wealth" to run your business is not ideal. You're best starting with a pocket of change and having that as your turnover. He's essentially moving his assets into the business in order to distinguish his personal finances from his business finances.

Top Gear and Grand Tour turned to bad B-movies with illogical scripting. Clarcksons farm and Hammonds workshop is a great contrast. Same with May when he built all those things. Would be awsome if they could reel Grand Tour back to be more genuine, so maybe we could have new classics like the polar expedition :)
