Since you are not going to have a basement and your house will be the high point in your property, you might want to consider investing in some kind of tornado shelter since tornadoes are somewhat common in Tennessee. Yiu might also want to install a lighting rod somewhere near the house as well.

A basement is a Storm Shelter, especially in the South where we practically have to live in them during Tornado and Hurricane Season. Everyone in the South Knows that Hurricanes throw off Tornados, so we are pretty much never out season for them.

dont forget to run electrical for end tables if you are in the middle of the room and then the Christmas tree in the floor so you dont have long cords everywhere- more outlets next to the mantle for garlands - etc....you both have this I cant wait!

Very similar concept as how houses are built in South Africa. Plumbing is kept to the boundary walls as much as possible and the boiler is normally in the roof. Hot water pipes will go from there down in the walls. 😊

If it is in your budget, I would recommend that you put asphalt on at least half of the driveway, especially in fron of the house. My daughter in law's father had a home with a gravel driveway. Over time, the gravel sunk into the soil and the area around the house turned into a quagmire every time it rained:

Just out of curiosity- are you planning on having a safe place shelter in your garage? I drive past a sign every time I go to work that talks about how the shelter is rated for either an EF4 or 5. If I seriously had the room, I would install one of those shelters IN A HEARTBEAT!!! Your baby cracked me up because she really had something important to say!!! So happy for you!!

You will HATE having a gravel driveway! All of that gravel dust will be tracked in to your house every time someone comes inside from outside. If you can’t concrete it, use asphalt. Keep an eye on everything every step of the way, only trust YOU to get exactly what YOU want. Building your home is very stressful but totally worth it! Good luck!

I'm so happy for you! Nelson, you and my dad would have gotten along very well. He was a general contractor and one of his biggest complaints was contractors that would take short cuts to save money. You had to pay more to have a house built by him but it was a very well-built house. I've heard him say several times that he could have built a new house in the time and amount of money it took to do a remodel when a cheaper contractor had built the house.

When my babies were born my Mother-in-law took a ribbon approximately 8” long, folded it in half and threaded the folded end through the ring on the pacifier. She then put a diaper pin on the other two ends of the ribbon and pinned it to the baby’s shirt near the shoulder. This way, if the baby spit out the pacifier it would not fall to the floor.

Our house is over 20 years old built on a slab and a few years ago we had a leak in the plumbing in the kitchen. Destroyed our flooring. It had to be torn up and the cement jack-hammered through to get to the leak. Less than a year later, another leak, again in the kitchen. We ended up having the whole house re-plumbed which was crazy expensive. I don't know if we'll ever move, but if we do, we will definately get a house with a crawl space. I'll take creaky floors over flooding. LOL

I grow up in a home that had been built on a slab and we had a plumbing problem happen and they had to dig up the slab to fix it! wasn't fun! Why were they "steps" in the concrete?

Sorry to hear that. The footers are tiered down from the high part to the low part. If you are facing the house the right side is the high spot and the land has a natural slope down on the left side of the house. Normally you can dig out the high spot to make it level with the low spot but trying to do that on our land would require digging out bed rock and that would take up too much time and be to expensive. We are building up the low spot with block walls and back filling to make it level with the high spot. Hopefully that helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
