I ambushed Kevin Kinney outside a radio station in Florence S.C. Told him I was fan and asked if he would sign my copy of whisper tames the lion. He did, he also sat down on these concrete steps, pulls out his guitar and says "what would like to hear?" Mannnn, I wouldn't trade that memory for all the interweb in the world!

I was 17, sheltered ain't the word. I had promised these slightly older girls from "town" that my country ass could buy them beer anytime. They decided to try me out. I walked in store grabbed nat light suitcase, then we ended up in a local cemetery listening to D n C. 1989 I think it was. Music changed for me that night. And I was the hero that somehow managed to not get carded. Fun times in Alabama. God bless you all.

This only reminds of an EX who broke up with me while we were living together in 1996. I never heard of these guys until she was playing their CD or it came on a radio or something. Same thing with Alice n Chains, except I can still listen to Alice, lol. I already knew about alice, just never listened to them much before she was around. Oh, why did she break up with me? Cause I broke my collar bone and couldn't work for about a month! It's ok, there were hotter women in the sea after her, lmao. I turned 21 that year, 1996. Oh, she told me that I wasn't reliable as far as keeping a job. Well the job I started when I broke my collar bone, I kept it for 22 more years lol, and now I've worked 5 years at the county, so screw her!

This song in particular has always been a popular radio song on classic rock themed stations in the Southeastern USA. If I recall, the band is from Georgia and they still have a decent following although this is probably the one and only song of theirs that got much radio or television play. I think they are still a band and play regularly although with a different lineup than the one in this video.

"Fly Me Courageous" is the title track of the album by the same name. Atlanta based Drivin' N' Cryin' released the record in 1991 during the start the Persian Gulf War. It struck a patriotic chord with Americans at the time and lifted the band's 4th studio album to heights previously unseen. Perhaps some people didn't listen closely enough to the song though, because some of the lyrics seem to indicate opposition to some of America's foreign policies. Regardless of how you perceive the song, it still rocks and its all American. The imagery painted by the lyrics is epic and inspires bravado... "Wrap me high in the sky...Circle me with stallions...She flew from peak to peak...With the freedom of an eagle...So fly me courageous!"

I have noticed the lyrics suggesting skepticism, to say the least, of American foreign policy, particularly this line, which opens the second verse: "Mother America is brandishing her weapons She keeps me safe and warm by threats and misconceptions." This may be yet another example of Springsteen syndrome (see "Born in the USA"), where a song critical of America's wars gets misunderstood as an expression of fervent patriotism.

Great song that I recently thought of and looked up. Just ordered the album. This band was just before the big move to modern rock via the grunge scene.

First time I heard this tune on the radio in 1991 I was stoned... I was blown away... Loved it ever since.

Just bc you get stoned does not mean you don't love America, justice, your kids, and the right to bear arms
