Driving a manual - Heel and Toe for daily driving

Driving a manual gearbox car can add to the driving enjoyment in a huge way. Here we discuss what it means to us and how 'heal and toe' downshifts aren't just for the race track. Blipping the throttle to make gear changes smoother is not only better on the track or when driving quickly, but great fun too!
This video was shot a while back and after some recent questions on the use of foot pedals for downshifts, I thought I'd upload this video as it gives a good idea of what I enjoy so much about driving an analogue, manual transmission car. The Peugeot 205 XS is a wonderful car to drive and enjoy but heal and toe shifts can be done in pretty much any car with a manual gearbox.

Great topic. I drive an auto as my daily but every time I drive my S2000 I constantly use the heel-toe technique. It’s so much fun, even during normal city driving. I Like your 205 btw, was so close to pull the trigger on a GTI a few years back.. 🙂

I've got one question, and bear in mind I am a fairly new driver. I've been struggling with downshifting on traffic light stops. I got good at rev-match and am practicing heal-toes. So practically speaking, if I am going 30mph and have to slow down and eventually stop cos on a traffic light stop ahead, what is the best way to downshift? From 4th gear to 3rd, 2nd, 1st and stop OR rather 4th to 3rd and then neutral and brake? I've been doing the latter but not sure if that's correct. Thanks a lot!

When you know you are coming to a stop I'd probably just use whatever gear you are in to slow down a bit then just brake lightly in 3rd or second before going to neutral before you stop.

Always rev match when downshifting regardless of how you're driving!
