Clive was my instructor on a steam day that I had been given as a birthday present. That was in 2005. He had such a magic touch; he is unforgettable. Rest in Peace.

I'd love to have met Mr.Groome. I'd listen to his stories until the cows come home. He's one of a rare breed

I believe he is still around but doesn't volunteer as much as he used to.

I have met him. My wife bought me a learn-to-drive-an-engine day experience a few years back, and Clive Groome was the tutor. A thoroughly nice man, i might add.

I am sad to say, Clive passed away in Feb 2024. Proper mainline enginemen from back in the day are becoming rarer now. Lets say you where a fireman in the late 60s at the end of steam and at the youngest you where 20 then you would have had to be born in the mid 1940s so will all be well into their 80s atleast now.

RIP Clive, a true steam legend, professional engineman, a gentleman. Now gone to the steam shed in the sky.

Awesome documentary. I would like to point out that he stated American Locomotives only had one water glass, which was duplicated by the GWR having a mix of American and French practice. That is largely untrue. Smaller industrial locomotives often only had one, with tri-cocks as a backup. However, almost all other locomotives and especially mainline locomotives (2-8-4s, 4-6-2s, 4-8-4s, 2-10-4s, etc.) had no less than 2 gauge glasses per federal regulation. In fact he stated the Big Boy locomotives only had 1, they in fact have 4 glasses to show a wider range of boiler water to aid the fireman when running uphill/downhill (water sloshing to the back of the boiler vs. the front).

I bought the dvd of this from Amazon and it is one of my favorite watches. As was then a job for life on the railways starting as an engine cleaner and if showing promise working your way up to be a fireman, the way in those times your elders trained and taught you the things you would need to know to become an engine driver, unpaid time in improvement classes all aimed at helping to on your way through your working life, hard work but much better times for sure. Clive Groome very much has to look of an uncle of mine who drove steam trains around Bescot in the Midlands and it's him I have to thank for giving me the railway bug, something I have had since I was a little boy. If you love steam trains and the footplate way of life then this video is well worth buying.
