Wait holy crap it’s a real truck! No infotainment?? No heated steering wheel?? No power tailgate?? It’s perfect! All it needs is say an 2003 6.0 or 5.3 liter Vortech out of an old van or truck with a mild cam and the 4L80 transmission to go with it. It would have great power and good gas mileage. Maybe some vintage air. I’d have a ball straightening out all that wiring that’s my Forte or you can get a harness from painless. Cool old truck! I’d like to find an old gmc with the big block v6. You couldn’t get them in the Chevy’s as far as I know. That would make a better truck than anything you can buy on the market and a whole lot cheaper.

Great video Tim! Love the old Chevys! Had a 72 GMC and sold it. Wish I didn't. Now have a 78 K5 Blazer. Nothing like old trucks. Thanks and keep enjoying Swede.

No time like now to get it moving! I’m really glad I did. Swede is a lot of fun to drive around and a nice break from the new cars with all their tech making them often a disconnected driving experience.

Well, I was just looking for vintage 70's studded snow tires (like we had on our '71 caddy driving from AK to AR)... But your truck. You took a bullet to the rear, but you don't have the classic "fired the winchester in the gunrack" hole on the passenger side. That is possibly the only part of that truck that was undamaged. Me? Dad bought a '73 chevy short widebed to work the farm of rock (5 small farms not farmed since the 30's = 1 big yield of rocks for 3 years straight). 1/4 ton. First year he decided to toss it, and waited 9 months for a dodge 3/4 crew cab that the ignition was so retarded it could only be invoked to life by 2 people on this world. I *hate* that dodge. 7 years, 7 starters, 70,000 miles. The front bumper rusted off, we drove over it on it's last trip to alaska hauling gear, on the gravel part of the AlCan, as it banged it's way along the undercarriage, it snapped both u-joints off the driveshaft.. So yeah, hate dodge trucks from that era. It actively tried to kill me hauling 300 gallons of 110L/L avgas in the bed with NO BRAKES, repeatedly. We dragged a chain behind it, locals in alaska thought it was to ground against static sparks while pumping fuel into float planes, nope... That was my anchor. I loved the dash of the chevy big truck, and that puddlejumper we had. And I loved bubblefenders even more. So I swore when I could afford it, I'd make the best that truck could be. Not so much a farm truck, not a low-rider, not a drag truck. Comfortable, a bit rough ride, good top end, good braking, those were the keys. So far we've gone coilover adjustable front suspension with a 2 inch drop, inverted leaf spring holders on back, with a 1.5 inch drop, the stock 15's are to be upgraded to 17 but with lower profile (not rubber bands, hate that shit) 2 inch wider tread. I wanted a slight rake to the front, but not scraping the ground. It came out great. We've got heavy duty front anti-sway bars, the stock 350's stock for now, but we've got gas/brake lines replaced, new tank and sender, I'm going with factory tach and full gauge package, got the A/C fixed, ripped out the solid column and replaced it with the tilt wheel from my first failed restoration (rusted beyond salvation), then swapped that column out with a '77 Caddy El-Dorado (I call it the El-Silverado) tilt and telescope wheel. Plus high ratio steering lower control unit so it won't be like turning a bus. The T350 was leaking from 4 holes, ran it for years that way but 1 quart a week of tranny fluid in the driveway (only leaked under pressure, drips) got annoying... swapping it out for a T-700 (factory option including column shift indicator)... The rear end is 12 bolt but open differential. WTF... the guy sold it to me didn't like it for a car hauler... the fact it topped at 70 mph and got 12 mpg, or the fact only 1 wheel pulls... in a lighter than light 1/4 ton... So we're changing it over to split differential, and swapping the rear drums to disk. When it's done, the interior will look *almost* stock... the caddy emblem and the caddy am/fm/8-track radio may give a clue... From the outside, it'll look a bit racy, but the motor's got borderline life use, it's enough to keep it rolling from nutcrackers to body shops, but not something I'd take 4,600 miles without a big chunk of credit card and a week of spare time. It sat in my driveway for 12 years slowly decomposing... lots of surface scratch rust, the classic small spots of holes from cab corners and runners, otherwise, most metal was intact. The economy tanked, just as I was about to start work on it... so it waited longer... The wood bed went from bleached beachwood to splinters as we had to tow it to the shop to fix the lost keys, broken steering lock, varnished gas tank and fuel lines, the list went on and on... A classic "It ran when I parked it"... for such a leaky tranny, that thing still shifts TIGHT... 1-2, 2-3, it'd pop your head back with the lunge, even though it probably developed 230hp when new... Right now I'm having problems finding a body guy who would actually weld in replacement body sections in the Memphis area, plus fill in a few holes drilled by ex-owners, including a chunk of the lower dash. (antitheft, 80's top end, it's tied into everything, half the reason I'm ripping all electrical out and replacing with factory repro)... One other problem I have is finding someone who can rig circuit breakers instead of POS fuses you have to keep spares of. Not sure where I'd find that skillset. So once it's finished, eventually I'll decide what motor to toss at it, a rebuilt/found 454 big block, like the original Sierra, or go 383 stroker, or a 350 with continuous supercharger... lots of choices if I wanted to street race, and it's got 4 inches wider tread from signal indicator to signal indicator. But it won't handle like a farm truck... I'd prefer to have 4 way independent suspension, but my nutcrackers don't feel up to the challenge of mating a Expedition rear end to a chevy frame. And I've no idea what it'd cost in labor anyway. I'd probably prefer to get a pre-cut-welded box tubesteel frame from end to end with all the necessary mount points for everything already worked out. I can already say it corners harder and there is _zero_ roll on the back streets, but I need that rear end and braking system uprade. I see your truck, it's not too far gone to salvage, but you gotta kill the rust. ave ur teel.

El-Silverado. That’s great. Mine is an old farm truck from my wife’s grandfather. I got it running, blew the 235 and found an old 283 sitting on the floor of an engine shop. I review a lot of new trucks and SUVs on this channel, but there is something about an old truck. I buy parts here and there to fix things and I take my time. We don’t get a lot of rust here and I’m going to let it rust out some more before I replace body panels. The frame is pretty much rust free. Thanks for your long comment. I sure enjoyed reading it.

@@Pickuptrucktalk Yeah, sorry about the long comment... I could talk for days about the inspiration, and what I'm doing, and what it'll end up as. If I had the money, I would own fleetsides from the 60's, knew a guy with a '57 5-window, and another one that owned a '56 Mercury pickup from canada, some trade issues meant you couldn't buy a ford pickup, but they could sell them under Mercury brand. I'm not up north any more, like Coldwar Motors, and he's got too much french crap, but a lot of his stuff is rusty as well. I'm agnostic, apologies to any chevy-only fans. I love series 1 broncos, series 2, and as much as I hated the 70's dodges, I even liked their imitation Jimmy. What I'm doing, it's not a forensic restoration, worthy of auction at Barrett's, with period specific reproduction of stickers from the factory on how to un-ass a jack handle from behind the seat, it's taking a vehicle, doing mods that look accurate based on the years it was produced, with the best gauges/panels for the era, making it comfortable to drive, not ridiculously slow, and handle like a slot car, or as much as a light-ass ended pickup can. I hope what I leave behind is a truck that drives great, maybe even some light drag ability, and looks stock until you open the hood. Pandora's Trux. Hmm... I could get that painted on the doors that only shows with blacklight, or use Luminor paint. My first idea for the name for the beast was "Derelique"... See, the city had my truck, in my driveway, inflated tires and all, declared a derelict. I had to un-ass my savings to start this restoration, and as you could imagine, I'm kinda PISSED at them... I had to get 2 idiot locksmiths to monkey-wrestle the steering column lock just to get it on the tow truck to get to the shop, because the tow guy was a complete ass-hat. Dick with a brim. "I can't load it, if you don't put it in neutral"... "Yeah, you can. The drivetrain means shit to me, it won't start, we can't get the ignition keys to unlock the steering column, but your job is easy, cause the wheels are straight." "Nope, can't do it."... Yeah, he actually sounded cockney, south wales if I'm to judge. I hired 2 locksmiths to pick the ignition key of a '77 chevy ignition switch, it's 3 stooges... "Just have a look at the vin number, we'll get the key cut"... Uh, I replaced the column with a tilt but not telescope wheel, you're locksmiths, NOT breaking into a bank vault.... I got nowhere... Yeah, people down in the south really are like that. They stripped enough of the teeth on the locking wheel to turn it, although they didn't have to, to get the dumb truck driver to load it in a straight line... I had to get a mechanic to disconnect the gear shift from the transmission. Do you read me? Just to get this idiot to load it on his truck. "Well, you can't let me winch it up the truck even if you've got the wheels straight, you might scuff the tires."... Um, excuse me, I asked to get my derelict pos pickup towed to a shop to get repaired, and you're giving me grief that you'll leave skidmarks?!?... Yeah, that was the 2nd sign he was a moron, pardon me everyone who is offended by the term. I had only one response left to me, by my reckoning... See this knife? I'll slash every wheel on that truck, it'll slide easily up your truck, the tires are dry-rotted, losing air, the white letters are bleeding into my driveway. Just do the damn job... I didn't get to prove my willingness to slash all 4 pos tires, he finally caved... 12 years in the making. Now I've got no one I trust to do rust repair at all, so I'm blazing forward with the mechanicals. Guess I'm going to have to park Derelique in my driveway in a flaking rusty black paint job. Maybe the city will declare it a derelict again... I assume doing donuts in front of city hall is a misdemeanor?
