I took an interesting ride over that mountain back in '08. I had a 45' tri-axle trailer behind a 2500 Dodge/Cummins. Spit the idler pulley out about 3/4 of the way down throwing the serpentine belt off. No power brakes, no power steering, no exhaust brake. Luckily, the electric brakes on the trailer got me slowed down and stopped on the shoulder almost at the bottom. I was hauling a 3/4 ton work truck and a '41 Buick.

The reason why the eastbound lanes of I-24 descending Monteagle have such a steep grade is because they were built directly on the roadbed of old US 41, the Dixie Highway. For a mountain that is just shy of 2,000 feet, it has long had a surprising reputation as a killer. This video doesn't do justice to what driving this road is really like. It makes it seem flatter than it really is. I have driven Monteagle on both present-day US 41 and I-24 and I can tell you this is one mountain you don't take for granted! Those runaway lanes have saved a lot of lives.

well maintained equipment and following the speed limit makes that hill a breeze. Alaska has 10% grades, very twisty 2 lane roads, snow, ice and no a single run off ramp...and that's not very talking about the Dalton!

Been up and down that one numerous times, no big deal, it's only 6% grade. Cmon up and run some 8 and 9% grades in the Cda rockies. It's against federal law to have more than a 6% grade on any Interstate Hwy.
@johnhudelson2652 Жыл бұрын
On Interstate 70 west of the.Eisenhower and Johnson tunnels the.grade is 7 percent. Perhaps the road builders got a waiver if indeed the.6 percent grade is the rule.

This highway is deceptive, poorly designed most drivers that get into trouble have no mountain driving experience this has long been a new drivers training route along with i84 i77 in w .Virginia. Virginia. N.carolina . Then if they survive they go to the big western mountains. Rocky mountains passes Sierra Nevada mountains, and many more ascending i15 in Montana some truck speed is 25 mph on a major interstate where auto speed is 70 mph screaming around mountain passes past trucks going 25mph such a good time 😅at 2:30 am.in the darkness 😂

@TrucknandTravelUSA4 ай бұрын
@@YADAMNDADDY I agree 100% but think about this, when you leave Denver going west you literally go from 5500ft to over 10000ft in less than 200 miles! Then you gotta come down. Add 7 more miles to Fancy gap and then run down that hill about 4 times In a 10 hour shift 😨🤣. I'm not even talking about Montana ever! Maybe in mid summer during the day but NO!
@YADAMNDADDY4 ай бұрын
@TrucknandTravelUSA im recent new driver. So, the fancy gap is my only mountain driving. But what makes fancy gap very dangerous to me is that speed limits are left to the discretion of the driver(no posted speed for trucks). All you see is 65mph speed limit. At night time, there are trucks literally booking 70-75 mph down the mountain not using brakes or nothing. Im nickname the mountain "the quiet k*ller" cause it gives off the illusion as long as you keep the truck in your lane you'll be aight. But for sure them mountains out west is a different animal, but always remember fancy gap is the quiet k*ller. Also barely any signs to let you know when the slope begins.
@TrucknandTravelUSA4 ай бұрын
@@YADAMNDADDY All facts! When Fancy gap gets you it's mostly driver error and it's easy to underestimate. I came down a few times that I should've stayed at that circle k or whatever that is at the last exit coming down, fog so bad you can't see 10 feet sometimes even during the day! And yeah you got those guys that's been driving it since 1987 doing 80 so it's definitely not something I want to do every day. I've only been out here for 4 years now.
