At 5:53, if you were to go straight, there is a tunnel that is the entrance to I-43 north. Behind the water truck there is a grassy knoll. Myself and many of my high school classmates used to hitchhike home from school, at that spot. To the right of the grassy knoll, there was a State of Wisconsin office building with a small break room. It had machine that dispensed hot chocolate and a snack machine. That was a nice retreat when it was cold or raining. Typically we would get a ride in a few minutes, but at times, wait up to one hour. The alternative was taking the Oakland Delaware bus from 3rd and Wis to Bay Shore and walking another mile or catching another bus, going north on Port road. More than once we jumped off the bus at Port and Silver Spring and ran to the north end of the shopping center as that second bus was winding it's way through the mall, and headed north on Port road. If we missed that second bus, we has to walk in the rain or wait inside the old Sears store for 45 minutes.

Rated the second most friendly state. It looks like a big city to outsiders, but has always been known as a small town. There are spectacular sights to see in the state. Residents don't brag to outsiders about their state. Once you see the beauty and variety of things to do in WIS, you will understand why. The state lacks Mountain Views, but more than makes up for it with waterfalls, trout streams and rolling pastures throughout the state, with very friendly residents.

He used to give us fresh fish on the weekends in the summer. Then one day in January 1977, he made headlines in the local Milwaukee Journal newspaper. His name was Lynn Worley or Worly. He was arrested and charged with conspiracy to murder the husband of his secretary, whom he was sleeping with. He was from Tennessee, and called a ex prison inmate in Nashville and offered him $4,000 for the job. The guy agreed and then subcontracted it out to another inmate for $2,000. That guy spilled the beans. He got 8 years in state prison, then got released and opened a small diner in northern WIS. He wife never divorced him. In January 1977, I had an after school job at a grocery store, 2 miles from my house. The day after Mr Worley makes headlines in the paper, I am backing my car out of the driveway and got it stuck in snow. We had ditches in our front yards and the deep snow covered over everything. There may have been a snowstorm the day before. I went next door and asked Mr Worley for a ride. True story. He gave me the ride and we just talked about the weather for the 10 minutes in the car. Meanwhile his picture in on page 1 in the paper! I am assuming he got released on his own recognizance or there was no bail. This was a big embarrassment for Schlitz and somehow they buried any efforts at a followup story on the case. The newspaper never wrote a second story on this matter. He had been a HS dropout and his wife advised him to go to school and earn a college degree. He did and somehow moved up the ladder at Schlitz. I am guessing he was about 40 when he got into trouble, as his oldest daughter was about 18. His daughter was beyond good looking.

The former employee did not fully understand why the business had moved out of Sturgeon Bay, to Mexico, since it meant all employees would be laid off. It seemed to me, he could not grasp that a business person would do that, purely to make more money for himself.

Went to Brown St. School and West Division High School. Live in Florida now. Brrrrrrrr
@maxsmith6953 жыл бұрын
Wisconsin is the best kept secret. Milwaukee's north side was always poor, but until 1985, it was quite safe. The police dept was not without it's faults, but they kept what seemed like a huge number of patrol cars on the streets 24/7 and crime was kept low. Adding to the low crime rate was a circuit court judge named Chris Seraphim. He was a hero to the cops. While other judges might send an armed robber to prison for 4 years, Judge Seraphim would give him 40 years. This did have the effect of keeping those prone to a life of crime out of society, forever, but it was heavy handed justice. When the police chief retired in 1984 and the judge was booted from the bench around 1983, crime began to rise. Businesses fled the city to nearby counties and the difficulties for city leaders mounted. Judge Seraphim was booted from the bench for groping famous local Opera singer in the elevator of the MAC - Milwaukee Athletic club, one afternoon when he was drunk. Had a black man done what he did to Carol Nesbitt, that black man would get 10 years in Waupun prison. He got probation in his court proceedings.
