Driving Downtown - New Orleans Louisiana USA - Episode 37.
Starting Point: goo.gl/maps/MRVzaZe3yrn .
New Orleans is a major United States port and the largest city and metropolitan area in the state of Louisiana. The city is named after the Duke of Orleans, who reigned as Regent for Louis XV from 1715 to 1723, as it was established by French colonists and strongly influenced by their European culture. It is well known for its distinct French and Spanish Creole architecture, as well as its cross-cultural and multilingual heritage.[8] New Orleans is also famous for its cuisine, music (particularly as the birthplace of jazz),[9][10] and its annual celebrations and festivals, most notably Mardi Gras, dating to French colonial times. The city is often referred to as the "most unique"[11] in the United States.
Economy
New Orleans has one of the largest and busiest ports in the world, and metropolitan New Orleans is a center of maritime industry. The New Orleans region also accounts for a significant portion of the nation's oil refining and petrochemical production, and serves as a white-collar corporate base for onshore and offshore petroleum and natural gas production.
Tourism
New Orleans has many visitor attractions, from the world-renowned French Quarter; to St. Charles Avenue, (home of Tulane and Loyola Universities, the historic Pontchartrain Hotel, and many 19th-century mansions); to Magazine Street, with its boutique stores and antique shops. According to current travel guides, New Orleans is one of the top ten most-visited cities in the United States; 10.1 million visitors came to New Orleans in 2004.
A 2009 Travel + Leisure poll of "America's Favorite Cities" ranked New Orleans first in ten categories, the most first-place rankings of the 30 cities included. According to the poll, New Orleans is the best U.S. city as a spring break destination and for "wild weekends", stylish boutique hotels, cocktail hours, singles/bar scenes, live music/concerts and bands, antique and vintage shops, cafés/coffee bars, neighborhood restaurants, and people watching.
The French Quarter (known locally as "the Quarter" or Vieux Carré), which was the colonial-era city and is bounded by the Mississippi River, Rampart Street, Canal Street, and Esplanade Avenue, contains many popular hotels, bars, and nightclubs. Notable tourist attractions in the Quarter include Bourbon Street, Jackson Square, St. Louis Cathedral, the French Market (including Café du Monde, famous for café au lait and beignets), and Preservation Hall.
Entertainment and Performing Arts
The New Orleans area is home to numerous celebrations, the most popular of which is Carnival, often referred to as Mardi Gras. Carnival officially begins on the Feast of the Epiphany, also known as the "Twelfth Night". Mardi Gras (French for "Fat Tuesday"), the final and grandest day of festivities, is the last Tuesday before the Catholic liturgical season of Lent, which commences on Ash Wednesday.
Food
New Orleans is world-famous for its food. The indigenous cuisine is distinctive and influential. From centuries of amalgamation of the local Creole, haute Creole, and New Orleans French cuisines, New Orleans food has developed. Local ingredients, French, Spanish, Italian, African, Native American, Cajun, Chinese, and a hint of Cuban traditions combine to produce a truly unique and easily recognizable Louisiana flavor.
Sports
New Orleans' professional sports teams include the 2009 Super Bowl XLIV champion New Orleans Saints (NFL), the New Orleans Pelicans (NBA), and the New Orleans Zephyrs (PCL). The Mercedes-Benz Superdome is the home of the Saints, the Sugar Bowl, and other prominent events. Each year New Orleans plays host to the Sugar Bowl, the New Orleans Bowl and the Zurich Classic, a golf tournament on the PGA Tour. In addition, it has often hosted major sporting events that have no permanent home, such as the Super Bowl, ArenaBowl, NBA All-Star Game, BCS National Championship Game, and the NCAA Final Four. The Rock ‘n’ Roll Mardi Gras Marathon and the Crescent City Classic are two road running events held annually in the city.
Streetcars
New Orleans has four active streetcar lines:
St. Charles Streetcar Line
Riverfront Streetcar Line
Canal Streetcar Line
Loyola-UPT Streetcar Line

Don't be such a silly bitch. If JB thinks it reminds him of some city in the West Indies then let it. In some ways New Orleans DOES look a bit like Havana or Santo Domingo or San Juan. Same people built all four.....psst… the Spanish!

Seattle is a beautiful city, best on the west coast. Unfortunately when I was there in fall of 2017, there were a lot of people sleeping in cars and on sidewalks right in the touristy areas. The spectacle of rampant human misery is very sad and tends to detract from the overall beauty of the place.

You have no idea how much I needed to see this video even though it made me cry all night. I have been trapped in Arizona for 2-1/2 years and absolutely hate the desert. I don't have any way back to Louisiana though. I kept mentally begging you to go down Chartres so I could see my old apartment (which faces the Royal Orleans parking garage) but you didn't. You could have gotten a good shot of the Square at the point where you have to turn off Chartres - or on Decateur for that matter. Also, after you passed Tujagues, I kept singing "The 12 Yats of Christmas" all night, which just made me cry even more. And what about getting shots of the original Pelly Thomas streetcars on St. Charles? You need to drive through the Garden District, and Esplanade or Elysian Fields, and post that.

@@jutah Its just people who have moved there since Katrina aren't aware that downtown is the French quarter side of canal St all the way to Arabi and uptown is the cbd side of canal St, the CBD isn't even downtown and to a pre Katrina resident it burns when newbies call it otherwise. I wasn't trying to upset anybody or make anybody look bad, just offering correction, hopefully the title will change or something, if you can but I get it, every other city calls their business areas downtown, we just don't in New Orleans and it was something that set us apart, be nice to keep it that way. New Orleans distinguishes itself from other places bc of small things like that.

What kind of vehicle are you in and what type of camera/how is it mounted? I assume it mounted outside of the car since you can hear noise from engines and such, but there's no other sound like wind noise or the sound of people that are around. In my videos in New Orleans, you can hear the noise from the people from inside the closed car sometimes.

nice city. one funny thing: a lot of very cute and lovely terraces, but i havent seen anyone sitting or even standing on them.. they are more for decoration, i guess..

those fill up with people at night... drunk people, who may or may not be throwing beads (primarily on Mardi Gras, but not exclusively) to passersby in exchange for a look at their tits. great town.

This seems to be shot in the morning. Everybody is probably still asleep from partying the night before. In addition, it’s either it’s right before or right after a major event so they’re turning everything over.

and the French they speak today we can still easily understand. to know: mardi gras means 'rich/fat' Tuesday just after the catholic fasten. We still have carnivals in major cities in Europe but that exists also in USA (Mobile Al.and another place I cannot remember) I think. There people fill pig blatters with air. We don't do that for hygienic reasons so th say.remarkable. In former times there was no plastic and the pig's blatter was used to make balloons and balls. Plastic and rubber came from America around 1870 I think. But rubber tires were only spread after the coe of Americans in second world war. People who want to see original carnival costumes should go to Venice Italy. Also the word carnival contains the word 'carne' which means meat in southern European country languages... a revival of the meat because people could not eat meat during fasten. and all those things...
