The one thing you forgot to add in Julie is the hotel costs, food and other costs, that you wouldn't have had to pay for if you had flown. I wonder if the flying would have been cheaper had you added those costs in. Because I know feeding two teenagers ain't cheap. LOL.

Also think that at least in America, most people already own a gas car, an electric car would be an added expense. My car is paid for, I'm not going to buy another. Gas or electric, so my gas vehicle is going to be the cheapest.

Carbon footprint depends on how they produce electricity. In France a lot is nuclear, no carbon, there is also hydro, no carbon a d wind same. So low carbon footprint instead of burning petrol or diesel. Both of which are carbon.

I lived in Norway for years. It's very expensive, period. However, one doesn't really notice this because the standard of living is so high, and salaries make up for it. I like to fly if in a hurry, if not, driving in order to see and experience more. Driving here in the U.S. where distance's are vast, is especially enjoyable because every state is unique.

I think that was a very informative video for the electric car. But I have to ask, have you ever looked in to the strip mining necessary to make a battery. Have you looked into the lithium leach fields which are harmful to the environment. Have you looked into how a battery is disposed of when in is no longer viable ? A electric car weighs about 500 kg, to make a battery you need 10 tons of salt to process the lithium. 15 tons of ore for cobalt, 2 tons of ore for nickel, and 12 tons of ore for copper. A total of 200 tons of soils being excavated for a single battery. I’m all for personal choice, but too often we don’t know the full consequences of our choices. Please do not take this comment as criticism! I believe it’s more about education! Since you mentioned carbon footprint I thought you might want to know that you personally had a smaller carbon footprint but to make the battery there is a huge carbon footprint. I love your show Julie and I have not missed an episode. I just felt I needed to ask you to look into what it takes to make a battery for electric car❤

I have never compared the damage caused by either kind of car in detail. But let’s not fool ourselves. We expect perfection from a new industry by taking an all-or-nothing approach instead of looking at least harm done. I can charge my vehicle at home buying my electricity from a provider that uses renewable energy. I can plan my trips better. But it’s not just the environmental damage of fossil fuels, but also the political consequences of being dependent on dictatorial countries that are not allied.
@jlt2726
@jlt2726 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with both of you, we have been conditioned to expect perfection, however, there are going to be consequences either way as well as being politicized depending on where you live. I live in the Permian Basin region which provides 40% of US Oil and has the capacity to provide US Oil for the next several hundred years. When it comes to batteries, the strip mining is more damaging as well as having less of the lithium not even discussing the issue of replacement battery costs. Costs are going to vary, however, here where I live replacing a battery is almost as much as the cost of the car itself, not to mention the hazards of battery disposal. Living out in the middle of no-where, electric vehicles are not practical and the entire electrical grid needs a massive update.

Tommy and I are in the automotive industry. The cost to repair an electric vehicle or replace the batteries is more than what we paid for our gas vehicles. lol. All depends on your finances and currently they are out of range price wise for most of us on a tight budget. Our electric grid can't handle our air conditioners (we get over 100f temps in summer) or freezing weather much less adding a car to the mix. Some day it may be plausible but not now. Beautiful trip.

I live in the U.S. and we are way behind in regard to electric cars and having accessible charging stations all over the country. We just had a catastrophic hurricane in Florida where there were major power outages. If people took electric cars they would have been stranded on all highways out and then emergency vehicles would not be able to get to areas to save people. That is why we can never completely rely on electric vehicles.

The carbon footprint is important but stating that driving electric results in a ZERO carbon footprint is just not true, unfortunately. It is impossible to state (anywhere in the world) how the electricity you use has been powered. In France, it would probably be nuclear but in Italy or in the UK it most probably would be gas (and still coal for Italy). It is cheaper to operate an electric vehicle always IF and WHEN you do not take into account the initial investment in your vehicle! Loved your vlog by the way.

I also have a Tesla Julie . Many people don’t realize the impact the batteries have ie. lithium mines and the other materials in the batteries. I do not kid myself that I leave a zero carbon footprint. Where do you think the electricity that topped the car came from. I love your channel, but you definitely contributed to the carbon footprint.
@LunaZane
@LunaZane 2 жыл бұрын
Completely agree! Also, the impact of where those batteries go after the short life is a major concern. But the immediate issue is how the electric grid will handle the problem of multiple electric cars. You’re just transferring your carbon footprint on to the electric company which is almost worse as small individual carbon emissions are easier for the earth to compensate than the big emissions from industry. Do not impact free and maybe a better choice but the lithium waste is a big concern.

Your electric costs in UK and Europe are astronomical compared to my residential rate in Saint Louis MO. I can charge my Model 3 overnight at home for less than $4 (20% to 80% SoC). For the same 20 to 80 charge even the local Supercharger was under $20 the last time I checked. When I travel, I look for places to stay overnight that have Tesla Destination Chargers - always a full battery in the morning and lower cost than a Supercharger.

I see the price difference HOWEVER 🙂 you kept having to stop to charge lol Time is money, I would not have time for all of that oh my goodness 20-30 minute and you can only get 150 miles on 1 charge it is not feasible at all unless you don't have to be anywhere anytime soon. WOW and you had to stop in France and spend the night and charge again instead of driving straight through. In California driving from SF to San Diego you would NEVER stop over night you would just drive straight through 8 hours no problem. That saves money in the long run 1 price for a full tank with maybe 1 top off. Plus nuclear facilities power almost all electric in every country so while you are saving carbon emissions nuclear facilities are not only DIRTY but are a forever form of pollution not even talking about the toxic battery disposal and the components to make the batteries are a nasty "blood diamond" battery situation /colbalt. Over all it still seems like electric vehicles have a LONG way to go to become ethical, less toxic to the environment than fossil fuels, economical, practical and less time-consuming. Thanks for sharing! 😀

Love your channel - but disagree with you 100% over the electric car. The reason is that far more energy is used in the production of EVs than certain existing cars. Roughly around 25% more metal, the battery uses aluminium, copper, iron, manganese, cobalt, nickel, graphite and lithium. The extraction of these metals cause huge amounts of environmental damage. YOU do not see, or have to live with, that damage. Does the environment benefit from EV's? The air quality around you definately does, but what about the places where the extraction of minerals takes place? I'll tell you who does benefit - big business.

320 miles is not a good mileage for most Americans. For those who drove to get away from Hurricane Ian that mileage would not get the majority of people out of Florida. Fort Myers to Pensacola is 586 miles (one way). Just driving Up to Tallahassee which was still within the hurricane cone is 394 miles, thus people would still be at risk at 320 miles and that is not counting sitting due to traffic delays which does use up the electricity in the electric car.

There is a substantial difference between the initial outlay in the cost of a comparably equipped EV and petrol auto. That needs to be figured in as well as maintenance. I know EVs come with a long warranty, but I purchased an 8 yr 100,000 bumper to bumper warranty on my Camry for less than $2k when is comparable to Tesla and I can get it fixed anywhere in the US. Lodging and meals that were necessitated because of frequent charging stops should have been included in costs. There is substantial carbon footprint created by EVs, because the charging stations, lines, power plants, etc . are all maintained by fleets of petrol trucks, machinery and backed up by massive petrol fueled generators. It doesn’t matter if they are nuclear or gas powered.

What is the source of the power you used. Night time power often comes from coal fired power plants. The carbon footprint isn't zero.

Hi Don’t forget that travelling by car you would have to factor in hotel accommodation for four people and possibly for two nights. I must congratulate you on the style and finishing touches you have brought to your stunning Italian house.

Ditto the comment that you haven't factored in the cost of hotels and meals along the way driving. Wanted to add that electrical energy generation often comes with an environmental cost. It can't really be 0 for the carbon footprint. Even if there are no emissions in the generation, there certainly is in the manufacture of those materials.I don't think green is always that green. One of your green energy companies is burning clearcut canadian forests and calling it 'biomass' and 'renewable energy'.

You actually need to add in the actual cost of the car when comparing electric vs gas. In addition you cannot say zero carbon footprint. That is incorrect thinking. Sorry. I can’t agree with your cost comparison. Love your channel. Beautiful video.

That does not take into account the monthly cost of a purchase of electric vs petrol. In addition though you are saving money on petrol the tax payers are bearing the burden of the charging stations. The electricity at those stations doesn’t come from the air. It comes from power plants. The batteries for these vehicles have a huge cost in dollars and carbon. Though it “sounds good” that you are saving dollars the reality is not being shown in its fullness. There is a lot more that goes into “costs”. Thank you for your concern for the environment.

I don't think that equates to a carbon footprint of zero. That electricity has to come from somewhere. Love the video and love the little Italian house!

The other huge environmental concern is the battery- replacement in US is outrageous and disposal of these batteries is very caustic to the environment- the cost of the electric car is is quite expensive and not affordable for us

What creates the electricity in all of the various countries. I know there is some question about the carbon footprint being created to provide the electricity. I'm truly confused by it all. My decision to purchase an electric car is pending.

I am not sure how Europe generated power but if it is not nuclear you are leaving a carbon footprint. People when they talk about electric cars forget that the generation of electricity leaves a carbon footprint.

What family car gets 35 miles per gallon....?? What about the higher cost of the car versus an electric? The carbon footprint didn't include the energy used to produce the electricity for the car....I disagree with your #'s but like like you had a great time!!😊

Even though u saved some money. the end result cost wise is astronomical if say u need a new battery for your Tesla. I hear a Tesla costs 40,000 for a new battery and can explode when wet, vs. 100 dollars if a petrol battery goes out. I will stick to my gas lol

I love that people desire to lower their carbon footprint. Unfortunately electric cars already have so much carbon footprint embedded once it hits the sales floor because of the batteries etc you have to drive it 20 years to break even compared to a new gas car. Now we are seeing more and more new electric cars batteries last around 10-15 years before they need to be replaced. Tesla replacement batteries cost between $15,000-$30,000 including battery and installation. Then you have that problem with a huge added carbon footprint to deal with. I don't know about you but any cost savings you make driving it now is offset by the $150-$300 a month you need to save to pay for the replacement battery. My suggesting is to sell or trade it in when you get close to 8 years old to avoid getting stuck with the replacement cost.

The price of a Tesla in America is prohibitive for middle income people. Perhaps the gas savings over time would offset the mammoth price tag of a Tesla. I don’t see many on the road here in the Midwest of America. Enjoyed the video. Wish you could compare total cost of trip including lodging and food on the road to flying. Can’t put a price on family time or beautiful scenery though! Thanks
