It's badly worded. If you have priority, you have priority. You don't need to assume you have it, you just do. If you want to word it properly, it should be: "Just because you have priority, don't assume others will agree." Ashley words it properly. If you have priority, behave like you have priority, and be prepared for those that don't play along. Otherwise you are sending mixed signals and confusing the situation. If you're approaching a road narrowing and you have priority, move into the middle of the road to send a clear signal that you are going for it. If you're sitting in your lane, slowing down. getting ready to stop thinking the other car might be an idiot and go, then the other car will think you're letting them through and they will go. Body language. There's a difference between using your right and being reckless.

It's 40 years since I passed my driving test at the third attempt and in that time I've got into all sorts of bad habits. A woman driving another car recently called me a "silly old sod" which stang because I still think of myself as a boy racer. Anyway, Ashley, I just wanted to say thank you because since watching your channel, the care and attention I'm paying on the road has increased greatly. It's quite possible you've extended my life a few years.

the first clip with the jogger at the crossing: yes the driver should have been aware of anyone who "may" have wanted to cross at the marked crossing, but the jogger still should have stopped and looked. you don't just blindly run out into traffic. regardless of the law and street markings, you're still responsible for your own safety.

Stepping out in front of a car when it's doing 30 mph and 6 feet from you means the resulting accident will be ruled your fault regardless; the car _can't_ stop in time, so always stop to look.

9:12 is the reason I don't cycle. Too many car drivers with the wrong attitude. Last time I rode through my city, I had my chain come off at a traffic light-controlled crossroads. I'd taken up a primary position in the cycle box at the front of the junction as I was going straight and didn't want to get mowed down by a left-turner in the queue. Alas, when the chain came off as the lights turned green and I couldn't get moving, the car behind was triggered, honking immediately and shouting abuse out the window while they sped past as I pulled off to the pavement. Today as I was coming off a slip-road onto a dual carriageway with some traffic (this time in my car, not on a bike!), a lorry deliberately blocked my path onto the carriageway by speeding up in lane one, closing the gap between himself and the car in front that I was clearly positioned and indicating my intention to take. I feel like the two are actually related: the 'no-one gets in my way, I'm the most important vehicle on the road' mindset. It's lethal. It gets innocent people killed and injured. And it's not going away either.

In fairness I'd have been pretty annoyed if the person in front had missed as many clear opportunities to pull out as they did. Also the cammer appeared to be driving in a bus lane when they finally emerged so either they had the legal right (ie. a taxi) and wasted time unnecessarily or they broke the highway code. This isn't to say that matey in the MG was right to do what he did but the cammer wasn't exactly putting in a good account of themselves either.

4:24 did the van in the side-road perhaps start to pull out so the van on the main road took avoiding action? Perhaps they had their foot on the clutch and it slipped a little, resulting in some forward movement, quickly caught, but not quickly enough for the oncoming van? As for the car at the end, I just hope there were no casualties.

@Justin Summers I've swerved into oncoming to avoid similar except the car actually pulled out onto a 60mph road way less than my stopping distance. They emerged from behind a van where they couldn't actually see the traffic they were pulling out to. There are cases when steering will save you more than brakes. In my case, it was either a 100% chance of crashing with the brakes or swerving for a reduced chance. This is way more plausible than the van driver thinking it was a carriageway although that's a possibility too.

I don't get what the cyclist at 9.20 did wrong tbh. That lane looked incredibly small, barely wide enough for a cycle and a car. The junction looked lethal for a cyclist too. You just know that he's queued at those lights, car behind tries to force past as soon as lights go green. The cammer wasn't affected by the cyclist either... So I don't get the issue.

technically, the cyclist went through a red light, but he wasn't riding and went onto the grass verge, and did so to avoid traffic speeding off the lights. the headphones mean he may not hear traffic behind him, but he may have had them turned off, we don't know, just easier to carry on head. as Ashley said it's not really a problem the camma needs to worry about.

That Lorry (8:34) going down the wrong side of the road in Cambridge is also in the right hand lane which is only for going straight or turning right (you also have to deliberately turn into that lane as Gonville place turns into the left turning lane). That junction is at a weird angle though, so I suppose there could have been some confusion about which way to go, but there is an enormous catholic church on the corner between the A603 and A1307.

The clip with the van on the wrong side of the road looks like the A30 east of Honiton. The dual carriageway starts about a mile or two behind the cammer so they may have mistaken it but seems unlikely as the road ahead goes through a narrow village. In my experience driving around Devon the locals do struggle to keep to the left though!

In Norway (and the US, for that matter), the center line between opposite directions is always yellow. There is no mistaking lane marking and center line.

That walking cyclist - it could have happened that he got a puncture, making it impossible to cycle on, so he was pushing the bike instead. I would walk over the red light as well, not to break the rules, but to reach the cross over on the other side of the junction - at least it seems to me there is a cross over. (this is dependant on the road, of course! This road seems not to have any crossing by looking at the video in details) Why walk over the red lights? Well, this line he is on is stopped, it will give him the valuable time to cross over the road and reduce the hold up of the traffic. PS: I don't think he would have to follow the traffic light system anyway as he isn't riding and a part of the traffic itself.

Once the cyclist dismouts, he is no longer a vehicle, but a pedestrian, the bicycle becomes 'luggage', like anything else we may carry or push. Quite at liberty to walk through those red lights, but of course, not across pedestrian lights.

@@nigelcox1451 the main issue with the cyclist is his stupidity at wearing headphones - cyclists need to be aware of their surroundings at all times and hearing other vehicles is a huge part of that awareness - save for the silent menaces that are electric vehicles and other cyclists , both of which come up by stealth .

A guess on the final clip, based on where the damaged part of the fence is(on the right of our cammer at 11:05), the road condition and the road itself. I'm guessing they came to fast down the hill and tried to shortcut the turn, lost traction because of the wet road and because the road isn't in the best state on our cammers side (as you can see at 11:09), lost control and tried to correct but overcorrected and flipped when they hit the grass/fence.

I’ve been on cycle routes and suddenly found myself on a scarily busy junction before. Sometimes it’s safer just to get off, get on the verge and push until you feel safe again. That first clip, agreed drivers should slow when approaching a zebra crossing but also runners/walkers need to make their intentions known. You should pause and still look left and right when using a zebra crossing and acknowledge that people understand your intention to cross, you can’t just run and suddenly turn 90 degrees and cross the road expecting all traffic to stop.

So clip 10 with the car waiting at the junction, the other driver was obviously in the wrong - no defending that. What am I missing with the cammer though? Why were they stationary for so long? Would that be seen as hesitation in a driving test or obstructing other road users? Especially seeing as the second they were wrongly overtaken they seemed to move out to use the left lane(?) Like I say, I'm missing something here so it could be a good opportunity for me to learn, thanks.

People need to really focus on getting from A to B without causing a fuss, and focus on your own driving - too many people screw around, like choose to overtake someone over speed limit then act like a total ass by brake checking the person they sped pass. As an advanced driver , one is taught to assess whether there is anyone present who would benefit from a signal , and CONSIDER whether to give it . It is not always appropriate to signal when not required and indeed there is a lot of evidence that 'robotic signalling' by people who just always do it without thinking , leads to lower levels of observation and awareness of other road users . Rest assured , I give signals where they will help other people , but just as often won't where they would benefit no one .

the other day i was coming down a pretty straight road, however it does have a lot of hidden dips. I saw the flashing lights of a tractor just above the dip and thought “i bet someone is going to try and over take it” so i slowed down, knowing that if there was someone, they wouldn’t be able to see me. sure enough, a motorbike comes speeding over the hill, and i think got a bit of a shock to see my car coming towards him. if i hadn’t slowed down before even knowing he was there, chances are he’d be dead.

Cracking video! It's such a shame I don't use a body cam as a jogger, because I've seen some corkers. One near miss I saw a couple of days ago was at a set of lights. Fella didn't break in time and ended up over the crossing as the lights went red. Pretty poor, but it happens. The really stupid part was that during the green man being on, the man decided to "fix his error" and reverse back to be behind the line, almost knocking over an old lady in the process. Generally, if you make the mistake of ending up over a crossing as the lights indicate it is safe for pedestrians to cross, the best thing you can do is STAY WHERE YOU ARE. Pedestrians *will* be trying to manoeuvre around your vehicle, regardless of how ill-advised that may be, so moving before the lights have changed and the crossing is clear is the worst possible course of action IMO. I was standing on the other side but decided not to cross the moment I saw his singular over-the-shoulder check. There's only one reason folk normally do that. 🤔

In that last clip, when you look close enough, the fence damage gives the clues - they’ve come from the other direction too fast, misjudged their speed and or the road conditions and effectively gone straight on over the fence! oops! Yeah I bet some underwear was spoilt on that drive.

Your calm commentary is just what is needed with clips like these. Drivers make mistakes. Some drivers are stupid or selfish. Getting angry about it doesn't help. I have little sympathy for dash-cammers who get furious with other drivers when you could see the other driver's mistake coming well in advance. As you say ... 'Anticipation'. As far as I was concerned the guy with the bike at #16 was a pedestrian wheeling a bike, not a cyclist. Therefore no laws broken by going through the red light. Maybe he could have been looking about him more carefully in a dangerous location though, because there are idiots about in cars!

It took me a while to understand what was happening in clips like this because in Australia, the pedestrian always has the "right of way" at a zebra crossing. It has been that way for as long as I can remember. I don't see the point in having a zebra crossing painted without it. Fun fact: I put "right of way" in quotes because in Australia, this has no legal meaning. Zero laws mention the right of way, only when you should yield. It's an understood meaning but still.

Clip 12. If theres double white lines in the middle of the road it's probably for a good reason e.g blind bends, hill etc. Still need to take care even if the vehicle your overtaking is doing less than 10mph

@@ColinSmith2001 This is why I bought a hornit bicycle horn because sometimes you can see the oncoming car before them. Most of the time they ignore the horn and carry on with the overtake anyway instead of tucking back in.

On my way to work there is a double bend over a bridge with poor visibility, often cyclists, tight and double solid lines. They can slow down quite a bit due to the hill but there is no way to see if it is safe to overtake. I jus hold back till safe then go past but many people behind get impatient.

Your videos make mw even more relaxed and driving a bit slower and with more following distance. Consequently i see more agead and choose better positions, and with that i get past more expensive german cars with drivers with fewer skills .😅

9:17 These kinds of clips remind me that most countries don't have cycle infrastructure similar to the Netherlands. I'd be horrified to have to ride on a 50-60mph road! With the exception of not cycling there at all, that's probably the safest course of action he could've taken. (Should probably keep the bicycle on the grass as well though, cause an inattentive driver could still clip your bicycle while on the white line.)

I saw a cyclist on a 50mph road in the Netherlands the other day and called the cops cause he was going into a dangerous (car only) intersection, and they told me they were already on it cause multiple people had already called about it. that's how strange it is for us Dutchies that cyclists are just allowed on fast moving roads pretty much anywhere else

I think the cammer may be commenting on the cyclist going through the red light (as a pedestrian), or putting the bike on the road when traffic is approaching from the right. It's hard to tell what the complaint is when they say "What are they doing?"

You seemed sarcastic at 3.00 when you said "it's all okay, he said sorry using his hazard lights" but this is a good thing. If you realise you made a mistake, you can't go back and change what happened. Saying sorry just prevents a situation from possibly escalating. Not everything is Down to a driver being a nutcase. Sometimes it's just simply a small mistake to be learned from.

I think the driver is offended the cyclist is using his pedestrian status to cross the intersection despite the red light. never mind the cyclist is technically not in the intersection despite his bicycle wheels being off the grass.

The lorry in the clip at 8:09 is actually following the lessons for HGV drivers. If a vehicle on the roundabout is in a lane that can only continue round, that’s their lane. If you as the driver entering can take up only lane 1 to do the manoeuvre needed then that’s acceptable to do as you’re not impeding the other road user. Both lanes continue onto a duel carriageway and therefore this is perfectly acceptable.

I very much doubt that they teach HGV drivers to ignore the possibility that a vehicle in the inner lane might need to move left after passing the first exit to the lorry's immediate left. It's not like the cammer could signal his intention to do so until he'd passed that first exit.

@@cargy930 As a HGV driver I can assure you that as recently as 2018 (when I took my test), this is taught. I did this exact manoeuvre on my test and I passed with no minors. Admittedly on a different roundabout, but the situation was the same

@@Stefan-cc3np I don't doubt you may have been taught that, it may even be an unspoken technique - my instructor would often tell me to "take the road" for example, even though there was nothing in the regs that suggested it was acceptable to do so - but I very much doubt that it's an approved technique, and I'm certain that the exact situation that took place in this clip would result in a fail on a test.

I was the driver of the van already on the island never heard that it is exceptable for the lorry to enter the island like he did I was always on the impression that you give way to vehicles on the island. If the lorry had not entered the island at that point I then would have indicated left and moved over to the left lane to enter the dual carriageway would not have stayed in the right lane. On that island some vehicles cut the island are in the lane that I was in but then go straight on.

It's so true that you can usually spot the car that's gonna cause problems. I'm in the US getting my license and practicing on a permit and I had a car cut me off that I just knew was going to and I had to brake hard to avoid a collision.

The truck emerging onto the roundabout is another example of where different countries have different systems, in NZ because if you are in the right hand lane going around that roundabout you would exit into the right hand lane coming out, be it going straight ahead or going around to the right, it would perfectly natural for a vehicle turning left to emerge using the left hand lane. Having used both systems I believe the UK system of sliding across at the exit to be inferior, even having listened to Ashleys recent explanation on the subject.

The APC van had just come through a sequence of turns where the road with priority takes the turns. Not excusing it but being aware of that means your more ready for it at that junction.

Clip #19 the van parked close to the junction was part of the problem, obscuring the nearside traffic lights. But the driver of the car going through the red lights still had the opposite lights, so still at fault. The pedestrians view was also blocked, so would need to step onto the road to look around the van. Yes right of way not always a given, with two careless drivers. Last clip - as others have said, the driver failed to negotiate the bend and the car rolled on the steep bank on the field.

Often wondered about the rules on giving way to cars in lanes you don't intend to use on roundabouts. It does make sense to give way to all lanes but it is very common that they don't

The first one.. look left and right before crossing the road? Zebra crossing is still crossing the road. And yes the car should have been aware of surroundings and stopped. Zebra crossings are always a mixed bag, I've had drivers not stop even when I've reached the beginning of the crossing and waited to see if they'll stop for me. I've also had people stop for me when I've not even reached the crossing and I'm not even taking the crossing, just walking by.

My dads advice for traffic lights. Green means it's your turn to go, it doesn't mean it's always safe to go. So always check and keep your wits about you for red light runners
