Happy New Year to you too Ashley. I was just going to take this opportunity to also thank you for all the videos that you make and put out. It must take quite a bit of time and effort to sort through all the footage that you get sent. To also then sort out what's useful to your viewers. I always remember the first video I came across of yours where you called out the people sending footage of poor driving when actually they were worse (or at least not making the situations better). My driving has improved hugely over the last 2 or 3 years and your advice always sticks with me whether I'm on the daily commute or a completely new journey. Here's to another year of improvements (even if everyone else seems to be getting worse 😂). Have a great 2025. Cheers Matt

The reversing light one reminded me of an HGV driver who kept blowing his horn at me in a stationary queue, like going a bit mad - I got out and asked what was happening and he said there was green fluid dripping from my car. I pulled over into the adjacent bus stop and had a look just in case it was something worth bothering about. It was washer fluid off the back window, which was a bit rich with screenwash and I had just cleaned the rear window while he was stuck behind me.

Well…the driver was sort of correct, there was green fluid dripping 😄 Reminds me of someone frantically trying to get a lorry driver to stop as they “were on fire”. Turned out they had just pulled out of the yard but had to go uphill so they engine was cold, straining and producing a lot of diesel smoke and condensation. The driver wasn’t happy as they now had to do a fully loaded hill start

A friend of mine at work has a brother-in-law who's a farmer. Whenever he gets beeped and flashed at in his tractor on single-track roads by impatient drivers he stops and gets out and asks if there's something wrong. Like a light out etc. He finds they shut up pretty quickly when they're suddenly unable to just hide inside their car.

At around 2:45, I'm not changing my Focus either. Its a silver 2009 Focus 1.6 Titanium five door petrol manual. Owned since 2018 and I'm extremely happy with it. But more than that, it's the car that my very dear late Mum and I have traveled to so many places and events together and holds so many wonderful memories of very happy times. I still have some of Mum's possessions in it, including a lovely soft blanket I got from the USA for her. It's still on Mum's passenger seat. And she always commented on how nice the car looks. We both particularly like the high mounted rear light clusters (which are no longer the case on newer models) and the stylish multi spoke alloy wheels on the Titanium versions. Similarly, I would never part with Mum's 1978 Mini Clubman, which she owned from new. It's interesting how one can get so emotional about a car but when a dearly loved very close relative passes away unexpectedly, it's understandable.

8:40. Recently I had to brake and back off for a man with his small child walking diagonally across the middle of a 4 way junction. The man waved to say thanks because I stopped to let him pass but his attitude was belligerent of ‘this is ok because we are in a rush’, while the kid clutching his hand was looking at the traffic around them with abject fear. The "right side rear reversing light" also reminds me of a story my dad told me once when he drove a Mark I ford escort which had the side mirrors mounted on the wings of the car (as opposed to being on the doors) When he was driving back from work one time he noticed in the side mirrors that it appeared someone in a brown ford car was tailgating him very closely behind then he realised it was his own car!

Around 6:30 you are stopped behind "Keep Clear" markings. The space in front of it becomes available so you move up. The van on your tail moves up and covers the keep clear and blocks the junction with the side road. I see this time and time again at Keep Clear markings. It doesn't matter how you 'show' the driver behind you that you have stopped and waited deliberately, then only moved forward when you can clear the box, they never get the message. Same with box junctions. You can even get hooted for doing the correct thing. Unfortunately too few drivers look further than the end of the bonnet.

_Hey @Ashley, what is your opinion on people exploiting the loophole to perpetually keep an L plate on their moped, typically to run around for food delivery, like Ubereats? My experience is that these are some of the most dangerous drivers due to poor decisions, as well as being highly vulnerable road users themselves. I would like to see L plates be banned from commercial usage._
@johnbooth5199
@johnbooth5199 Күн бұрын
This was discussed in Parliament, before christmas. It was noticed that in London, accident stats for L plated mopeds had risen noticeably in the last 5 years. Many collisions were with delivery riders. Changes in licensing have been mooted for some time, due to the high number of moped collisions, but the increase due to the rise of delivery companies, has brought it to the foreground. Also the widespread use of hacked, or plain illegal e-bikes, has been debated as well. The problem is how do you control the delivery industry, when the riders are classed as "self-employed contractors". When that loophole is closed, the authorities can go after the delivery companies, themselves. As with anything involving law/ regulation changes, it takes ages.
@ricequackers
@ricequackers Күн бұрын
The whole delivery industry, from takeaways right up to parcel deliveries needs to be hauled up for their business practices. They shouldn't be able to get away with disclaiming liability for traffic laws, employment laws and immigration laws by using the "independent contractor" defence, especially when their own unreasonable business practices is the root cause of these problems.

I've seen wiring faults that cause anyone behind to wonder what is happening. brake lights and indicators interacting with reverse lights as if it's a christmas tree. Usually a couple of chafed wires or an earth return. I wouldn't want to try to trace/rectify that fault on a modern vehicle.

In flying there is a saying that you should never get yourself into a situation that you haven't already thought about. It doesn't seem to be well-remembered in the driving sphere, though I'm sure professional driving instructors do try and instil this in their pupils, who then go and forget it.

It's because the UK requires a rear foglight, so many manufacturers simply use that position for it on one side. In countries where foglights aren't required they'll have two reversing lights.

the clip at 2:15 is how new students are taught to drive in the Netherlands as well. We call it: Het nieuwe rijden. You already did this a lot longer perhaps, i do not know. When i took my lessons we were not yet taught this way of driving. Encouraged yes, but not directly taught to behave like that. Therefor it took me a bit of time to adjust to it, but i must say: This is much better. But, in the Netherlands you just have to expect someone to have their nose up your bum because you have slowed down early.

@@MrHabushi The UK does indeed require a rear foglight but that doesn't stop manufacturers fitting two reversing lights, in fact, many still do but the real reason is a cost-saving measure. Why design and fit two when they can get away with saving money and fit just the one.

At 6:08 regarding the reversing light "advice". I've also heard of someone telling a driver "Do you realize you've only got one reversing light working?" Hmm. And your case, as you mentioned, you don't have a right hand reversing light. Its a left hand reversing light and a right hand rear fog light on UK cars. If the van driver knew this, they wouldn't have made that mistake.

really, in most of the UK, good all-season tires are enough. consider the temperature range we run our car in is 10-100 degrees F(-12 - 37 C) on good all season tires. only problem we ever have is in deep soggy snow, when everybody else is having trouble, too.
@Carlo_q9545
@Carlo_q9545 Күн бұрын
@ Normally yes but the general public can’t drive for crap on a good day let alone a little bit of snow. For temps of 7oC and lower winter tyres are needed as the compound is even softer than all seasons. With the tread pattern added far better grip than all seasons. And yes, I’ve tried the difference and it is noticeable.

At 1:45 the HC mentions this very situation to say don't wait in the gap in the central reservation unless your vehicle fits in it. Basic common sense anyway. Not excusing the van in any way but if the car in front had positioned all the way over to the right, as opposed to centrally, then the van could have completely fitted in on the left without mounting the curb.

7:30 I'd like to see an online tool available where you could record the license number of a vehicle with a problem, and report it online, and the system would send a notification to the registered owner. if it was a minor, it would just be an anonymous note "someone noticed you had a problem, you should fix it" and if major, "someone called our attention to a deficiency. if you don't fix it, and get pulled over; you can't say you didn't know about it."
