There was a big enough gap for them to pull out safely (it was a 30 road) but they chose to wait until the last minute, causing me to emergency stop! The examiner complimented me on my reaction time and assured me they were at fault. @@Gobtik I am sure they do, never claimed they didn't. This is why I said it is essentially an undertake. Not an actual one. I'd still be wary of the fact that most drivers are not going to check their left mirror while turning right at a junction. I agree, passing on the left is something cyclists should be looking to do as it means they only have to contend with a curb and one car, rather than oncoming traffic. However, passing while the vehicle in front is turning is, in my opinion, not the best of ideas and in this scenario has proven the incorrect decision. Waiting behind the car for it to turn, or completely stop wouldn't have caused this collision :)

That cycle clip around 4:25 I'd say there are three people at fault here. The cyclist could see the car emerging from the right and IMO I would not have tried passing at this point and made space for something to go wrong, the Silver car (Seat) should have checked their mirror on approach to the hazard in the road to see the cyclist, and should NOT have swerved to avoid a collision, and finally, the white Astra should in no way have been blocking half the road, looks like they were trying to cut up traffic, its not like traffic coming from the other direction is that busy so there's no need to be in the road like that. So I'd dish out responsibility 33% each way, as not one person directly involved was helping the situation.

4:10 I would say the cyclist was definitely too close, and gave himself less than a 1 meter gap to pass the car, which could have swerved left to avoid the car trying to join the road. I get that it is tempting to pass slow traffic on the left but those were "normal road conditions" and he should probably have stayed behind and waited, just like a car would have had to do. And I think the Seat wasn't looking far enough ahead or something, they kind of looked surprised to see the merging car. In the Seat's position I would have kept going with caution, in order to shield the cyclist from being hit by the white car.
@martinhowes14963 жыл бұрын
@F1 The cycle lane runs the entire length of that road and is broken where the road was too narrow to continue it leading to a lot of examples of cars just merging into cyclists after being able to drive past easily moments before. The clip in the video starts during one of those breaks and most likely the car would have overtaken the cyclist moments before. That junction is also notorious as its a very very busy road so drivers get impatient and just pull out too and at the bottom of a reasonably steep hill meaning most cyclists are going well over 20mph and often at the same speed as the traffic around them.

To the Rider, there may be some bit of fault for everyone involved. But you can only change the way you ride so I think it's a good idea to look at all your close calls and think what could I have done to not be in this position. In your case. Firstly you was too close. Only a fool breaks the 2 second rule. Your road position was very unusual it's almost as if you were trying to undertake the siat. Your standard road position for most situations should be the centre of your lane. Because you was in position 1(in the left of your lane) you cut of more of you vision of the right part of the road and you become hidden from cars which are in side roads in your right. Vise versa for being in position 3(in the right of your lane) Remember you have the right to be on the road and when your in lane you own the whole lane not just what you take up. When your on the left like you was your almost inviting people to overtake you. And believe me having a car overtake you in the same lane as you is not fun and it's a lost more likely to happen if you don't own your lane. Bottom line. Basically stay in the middle of your lane. You only really want to moving out of the middle to: 1.get a better view. (So you can see around a bend or so you can see minor roads better). 2. Pulling up at lights. Its better to be off to the side At lights to reduce risk of being rear ended by people not paying attention. Also in low light people may mistake your tail lights as break likes for the car infront. 3. Your turning. E.g. you shouldn't be turning from the centre of your lane. Being out to the left or right will allow cars to a. See that your probably turning if you forget your indicator and b. They will be able to pass you which is important for if you need to stop because you can't complete the turn safely your already out of the way So your less likely to be rear ended.
@martinhowes14963 жыл бұрын
The road he was on has a cycle lane that runs continuously down the road, but ends and restarts during parts of it that were too narrow to keep the minimum road width which is where the clip starts. What would have most likely happened is that the driver of the Seat had overtaken the cyclist quite comfortably just before the clip started during one of the cycle lane segments and then promptly forgot about them as most drivers do. The only thing is this road is on a fairly steep hill and most cyclists will be doing 20mph+ on that part and often keep up with traffic. So yes, while your points would apply in a normal situation, this cyclist is technically in a cycle lane hence the road position on the far left, and again explains why they were so close to the Seat. Cycle lanes encourage cyclists to 'undertake' the traffic if they're going quicker than they are. Its terrible road design by the council and has caused numerous accidents since it was put in. Much safer when there was no cycle lane painted there since cyclists road further out, but if you do that now you get mountains of abuse for not being in the lane, even when its not there.

I agree with others, I just do not understand people who do not reverse into a parking slot. With supermarket carpark slots so narrow, reversing out is dangerous. @@martinhowes1496 Well that is stupid design indeed. I conclusion though I would then say that the cyclist was 100% in the wrong. No cyclelane for that bit so tailgating essentially.
@martinhowes14963 жыл бұрын
Not much the cyclist could do if they've been overtaken then pushed together by the road design just to have the car in front slam their brakes on. No different to a merge in turn, except that would never be built by a junction for just this reason.

@@martinhowes1496 The car didn't overtake,. The time stamp shows at least 1 minute before the incident that car was in front of the cyclist.

1:03 Blacking out the back windows. He may have had a full bulkhead fitted completely negating an interior mirror. I had this arrangement for security and it sort queries the MSM procedure , centre and left etc. You find yourself trying it when you change car to van.

Clip 12 gat me just laughing, so lucky no tree, what on earth is chasing the driver.?

The irony of the second clip is that last time I went to that Tesco's in Devon there was a car safety stand by the police.

That isn't irony, it's simply a coincidence

@@Gobtik the fact that you understood what I meant demonstrates the efficacy of my language use. Yet this language superiority arguably started in the 15th c as Caxton's printing press began the entrenchment of language standardisation of both syntax and in this case lexis. You are not the first, however you are the latest iteration of the "grammarian" who seeks to suppress language variation as well as regional dialect so that you can feel like you are superior in your lexicon. That's a real shame, and these attitudes are arguably causing further class divides. I'm also an English student haha... And actually to be more specific this has now become dramatic irony as we both know this, yet the driver doesn't. Actually if I were to be picky, I'd ask you to reflect upon your syntactical constructions... Those are two main clauses, maybe consider the use a semicolon rather than a comma? But that's your language, so who am I to judge?

5:56 is the worst junction I've ever had to drive through. It's a motorway with a major road joining from the right into the overtaking lane, and another from the left. Then a left exit about 400 yards later. Not defending the taxi driver but that stretch of road is a deathtrap
@Rallyman723 жыл бұрын
Looks like a BMW in clip 8 doing the overtake - what a surprise! Clip 10, for me, is too close to the car in front and not reading the road.

5:49 no lie that's an everyday situation on that motorway actually, I can tell you that from going to school for 5 years through that road 👍

clip #10- I think the main fault was the white vauxhall pulling out in front of the seat, however the seat could have started slowing earlier, just another case of "they must have seen me". The cyclist could have slowed earlier too, about the point when the seat moved in front before it was braking, in this case the cyclist wasn't "looking 10 seconds down the road", he was looking at the back of the seat

5:15 I live not too far from there. I avoid it at all costs, they jump every single lights on that stretch and also pulling out from side streets and parking spots. Its a vile road.
