Back in the 70's I drove "Alligator Alley" when there were no guard rails. There was even a section that was slightly underwater where I had doubts about getting through.

Just so you know, once you made that big curve about 50:00, you were no longer in the Everglades, and the rest of your drive to the little post office in Ochopee was through a separate ecosystem called the Big Cypress. I've been on that road dozens of times, but not in the past 25 years. It was interesting to see the new longer bridges in the Glades. The Tamiami Trail had no bridges originally because nobody understood how the Everglades worked. The Army Corps of Engineers had to redo all the plumbing to channel the water because the national park wasn't getting enough and the corporate sugar cane and vegetable farmers around Lake Okeechobee needed more of it. The history of south Florida and the mistakes and mismanagement of the ecosystems makes for interesting and sad history. Don't know how much time you have for reading, but I highly recommend a book called River of Grass by Marjorie Stoneman Douglas to help you understand how badly screwed up the whole place is, thanks to ignorant overdevelopment.

Thanks for all the great information! I'll definitely have to drive this route again especially to see the smallest Post Office and the Everglades National Park. It's a shame the Everglades were so negatively impacted by human development but I'm glad steps are being taken to preserve them!

Man did that bring back a bunch of good memories have not been through the Everglades since I was a teenager. Thank you AK for letting us ride along. The one bad memory I had from the Everglades was remembering the 1996 crash of value jet Don't know if you remember that or not.

28:17 Scenic views of the Everglades! 😍 1:19:21 You mentioned there's a panther crossing the highway, but I didn't see it on video. Did you see it on your rearview mirror? The thumbnail with the alligator was such a tease, since there's no sighting of one during this drive! 🤣🐊 You picked a nice day for this trip, and thank you for sharing this scenic and entertaining drive, AK! 🤗

I like this US 41 Tamiami Trail section between the Greater Miami-Dade and Naples because I like The Everglades. My aunt & uncle had retired to Naples many years ago in the early 1980s and they loved it back then, sadly both passed away in 2003.

Lol. I'm 62. In 1976 I was 16 and hitched a ride a midnight.... the bus dropped me off at the edge. Hitched over one hundred miles on the Tail. Miami Herald truck picked me up. Thumb out at midnight alone hearing the critters. Spooky. Made it to Naples at sunrise and ate oranges in the grove for breakfast. Then on to Sarasota and Venice to visit family. The 1970's and 1980's were great for Florida bro. My aunt even went to school with Pee Wee Herman and my grandfather is buried and lived by the adult theater he got busted in. Florida was real. Miami and Lauderdale as well. I lived in Tampa Bay and St Petersburg for 40 years. It's gone now brother. I moved to Pennsylvania 3 years back. I don't miss the heat or the bugs but I miss what Florida was. I wish you all lived it.

I grew up running around the northern end of US 41, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana. In 1991 I decided to see what the rest of 41 looked like. I had a friend who was from Florida and I was very concerned about Miami because of the tourist shootings in some neighborhoods. She was more worried about me crossing the Everglades by myself! I said, what is the problem? She said, "there are no houses, no phones and no gas stations." I said, "You have described most of Michigan's UP! Now, how far across the Everglades are we talking about? An hour, hour and a half? NO PROBLEM! I'm used to that! Now, tell me about Miami . . ." 41 is a GREAT highway, I don't know why it hasn't gotten the recognition that 66 has. By the way, there is a section of highway (M-28) in the Upper Peninsula that is very similar to the Tamiami Trail across the Everglades, except it doesn't have alligators or palm trees. It's called the Seney Stretch.

Back in May 2018, we took a 15 day trip to Florida. It was our first time to the state. We stayed in Orlando, Clearwater, Key Largo, Key West and finally Miami Beach. We loved every place but Miami Beach was a little too much for us. We were there 2 days and then wanted to stay elsewhere. We ended up driving this same route and stayed in Bonita Springs for the final 3 days of our trip. We had to drive back to Miami for our flights back home. We're from Nova Scotia and would love to live in Florida when we're retired or at least go down for half a year.

Actually, there's been several films and maybe one comedy classic show like Only Fools & Horses that was filmed in the Everglades. But that's one of popular tourist destination known for wild animal sights. I get it why he added the image of alligator on thumbnail. 😏
